To the point that my husband is complaining. :wink: Sometimes I have to do deep breathing before responding, but I try to respond as much as I am able, while still honoring my other commitments to my kids, husband, and job. I have a *lot* of deeply evangelical and conservative family members, and I know some of them probably had to hold their noses to vote for Trump. Some love Trump, and some voted 3rd party or wrote in someone else I don't care for (like Marc Rubio). So I try, I don't always succeed, but I try to honor myself by not rolling over and giving in....but I try to honor them by being civil and if I can manage it even upbeat when I disagree.</p> <p>Progress is only made if we find some common ground. So a small example. I wrote a heartfelt FB post about marching in the NYC women's march. One cousin responded by posting a meme about Madonna and Michael Moore. First, me head exploded. And then, I took a deep breath and I responded in a bro tone, made a joke, and then took a jab right back at him. And then he responded in a civil way. </p> <p>In terms of real-life interface, I had an aunt pass away recently. She was one of my favorite aunts growing up, although we've lived in different states my entire adult life so I can't say we were "close". Her adult children, my cousins, are rabid trump fans (I could call them a few other choice words). My husband refused to go to her funeral because he is legitimately afraid of these people. I forced myself to go and dreaded it. But then I chatted everyone up, was sweet as pie, my daughter charmed everyone....and at the end of the day I felt like I did the right thing. The majority of my family voted for Trump, largely because of fake news articles and distrust of hillary. I send them noteworthy neutral articles that are fact driven, not from even left wing websites. I also organized a blanket drive for refugees in Jordan in the days after the election. People who donated voted for Trump because they believed in helping refugees but not welcoming them into our country. When they verbalized this, I sent fact-laden articles on top of fact-laden article about how refugees are vetted, how the majority of terrorist attacks weren't committed by refugees, etc. I figure education is just the best way to get through. And if trump supporters don't care to look at the facts, then they'll ultimately lose out. The best response to that, I think, is kindness.<br /> For example: I organized a blanket-making activity for my family to do at thanksgiving. The kids liked doing it (until they got bored) and we made 15 blankets to donate to an organization supporting refugees. I posted about it on Facebook and encouraged other to look into the charity were were supporting. It was non-threatening, but was clear my stance on the subject of refugees.<br /> I also think it is appropriate to voice your concerns on Facebook, but at the end mention that you aren't interested in having an open discussion in the comments, but you would be happy to talk with friends one-on-one in person or private chat.<br /> Also, call your representatives!!! Call the white house!!! Let them know you are unhappy with their choices and why. I always feel better after I write an email or call my legislator's office. I feel like I am doing something. </p>
