I love my job and I love working outside the home.

My days are never boring and never the same. I do a lot of research and a lot of writing – both things I love, and both things I’m good at.

Likes: I *love* the company I work for. It’s consistently named both a top employer in my state, and a top employer in the country. I love getting to problem solve and stretch my brain muscles every day. I love learning new things, which happens here all the time. It also pays well, which rocks, and they are family friendly and flexible.

Dislikes: Having to get up in the morning ;-) but that would be present with any job!

@Smurfette: I don't think so, unless there is a huge void that you have in your life b/c you want/need fulfillment in your career. Or the job brings so much negativity to you and spills over to other areas of your life!

I don't love my job. It is immensely hard now that i have a baby, to see the way my clients and their babies live (and are treated). i break the news of HIV diagnosis to people, mostly pregnant women, and then initiate their care plan. It's not exactly rainbows and unicorns. But my schedule is mildly flexible, I have tuition reimbursement, and I have enough seniority that my opinion is usually considered. Once I finish my masters degree, I'm saying peace out to social work. Thankfully, my new supervisor understands and supports that :)

Is it bad that there is nothing that I love about my job. I like that I have set hours and don't have to work over time in this role (I did in previous roles at the same company).

But I dislike the actual work, it is boring and the same stuff each month. There isn't anything for me to advance too either.

I love what I do, but not so much my job at the moment.

I work at a think tank doing research. It's right up my alley - I research complex issue areas (a lot of political/government type stuff) and write reports and other materials to make them understandable for legislators, lobbyists and the general public.

Likes: uses my brain and skill set. Very family friendly. I work three days a week and it's so nice to have a part time job that is still a real career. The three says a week gives us so much flexibility too. I can take care of the lion's share of the housework and give us more freedom on weekends. Also, I'm really passionate about the issue areas I work on and feel like it is an important job. Plus, to be honest, I'm very good at it.

Dislikes: the workplace. My boss quit and everything went to hell. We got a new boss and almost everyone quit and we've lost funders. She is very much a micromanager and doesn't trust me to do much. Luckily I've had some partners in other organizations really insist she use me as a resource so she has started to come around a bit. But it used to be a great environment and now it is kind of miserable. Apparently the new people we have hired are really great so I'm going to stay on st least until I've given them a chance. Part of me jokes I'll just stay on til the place folds and then collect UI.

I also dislike that it isn't exactly what I went to grad school for. It lines up perfectly with my thesis research, ironically, but when people ask me what my degree is in and I say "medical anthropology" I get pretty weird looks.

I don't think I am under paid, but sometimes it does irk me that I produce more deliverables than any other staff member and am only there part time.

I also don't like that I pay full time for daycare. We've been on a waiting list for a place with part time rates that is a few blocks away forevvvvveer. It does give me a lot of flexibility though.

This isn't really my job's fault and I don't know if it is a dislike really. My old boss told me I'm always undercutting myself in and acting like I know less than I do, whereas everyone else acts like they know more than they do. So I guess that I like that I'm starting to gain confidence, but dislike I have so much to gain. I convinced a bunch of organizations we work with to use my advice instead of someone else's who has much much much more experience than I do and I wanted to yell "don't listen to me! I have no idea what I'm talking about!"

Sorry for the novel, LOL. I've been thinking over this A LOT with #2 on the way and if it makes financial and personal sense for me to stay on or not.

Wow, so glad to hear so many of you love your job/career! I think that is best, or for those of us who don't love our jobs/careers, that we accept it and don't rely on it for fulfillment in life.

@amandalynn: @Modern Daisy: That's why I am a little afraid; if it's already hard to come back to work at a job you love, I don't know how I would muster up the motivation to come back to my job, besides the fact that I need to work!

I really like working, it helps that I have an unusually deep knowledge of an area that most people don't understand/know of. The glue that keeps me in this job is the people. I have been working with some of them for 15 years and you know what, they are an extension of my family.

This company has been extremely good to me. I was able to take advantage of tuition reimbursment to pay for my Masters degree, I have been relocated abroad, I have met my husband! Senior folks around here joke that he and I are bringing up part of the next generation of this firm.

As for the job itself, there are parts I would rather not deal with, like writing certain documents, but when it comes down to it, I know I am here to problem solve and design the new processes, which I love.

I am really grateful.

Yes I love my job! I'm a private speech therapist and I have contracts with schools. My job is flexible, I make my own hours and I work with kids! I also have the same holidays as DH, a teacher, but I'm not paid over the summer and Christmas breaks. The only real downside is that I commute 2-3 hours each day, but only work 3 days a week so I'm ok with it.

It depends on the day ;-)

I LOVE the company I work for, and honestly I can't imagine being in a different department. I'm knowledgeable about my area and that makes me enjoy it more. The thing I don't like is that we are a small non-profit and the chances of us getting an additional employee to make the workload less heinous is very slim. I have some very demanding managers and not enough time to be able to really focus and feel like I'm doing a good job. I feel like I'm just scratching the surface and that sucks. Let me tell ya. I want to feel accomplished, not leave at the end of the day and think 'well...the rest will just have to wait' and feel guilty walking out the door.

I currently work in retail. I actually don't hate it. I have a knack for sales and customer service. My job and boss are really laid back. My schedule is flexible. My coworkers are good. I wish it paid more but it's good for now.

I'll probably get another part-time retail gig in the US when we get home and work while Im in school.

I'm a psychologist. I worked hard for my degrees and I love what I do.

Likes: The opportunity to impact lives for the better every single day, watching my patients progress, working with kids and families, wonderful coworkers, great compensation, somewhat flexible schedule in terms of the days/hours I work (full time = 25 hrs/wk), and little paperwork. Plus, my commute is a measly 5 minute drive :)

Dislikes: Burnout, high levels of stress particularly when dealing with challenging patients or situations, have to work some non-traditional hours (afternoons/evenings) since that's when most people come to therapy.

I really like my job for the most part. I'm really hopeful that the fact that I enjoy my job will make going back to work easier.

Likes: I love that I work with people and get to build relationships every single day. I love that I do frontline work. I enjoy knowing that most days I really help at least one person. I like that no two days are the same. I am passionate about the field I'm in (higher ed) and excited to progress in my field.

Dislikes: Workplace politics. People who are rude or think it's my job to do everything for them. Paperwork.

I like a lot of my job and I've become passionate about aspects of it over the last years. The workload fluctuates so sometimes I am bored, which I hate. But meh. It's pretty good. I dislike the politics and red tape and writing specifications and stuff like that. That is boring. I like to solve problems, not do paperwork.

I am very fortunate to say that I love my job (most days). Even though it's hard to leave LO during the week, I get immense satisfaction from having a career that drives me. Of course, there are days when I would much rather be at home/out and about exploring with LO. I work in international higher education (I'm a counselor).

Likes: I worked hard in grad school to get here, I work with people all around the world, I feel like I help to make my students' programs a bit easier and streamlined, I have a flexible schedule for the time being (although this may change as we are moving under a new dean shortly), I generally love my colleagues, great benefits (time and health).

Dislikes: Can be long hours at times, need more of a staff but our budget does not allow for it right now, general politics in higher education (faculty vs. staff issues).

I don't mind my job.

Likes: I LOVE my company - seriously - I plan to stay with them for a long time. I love their vision, goals, and how they actually put their words into actions. I am so proud to say I work for the company I do. I adore my coworkers- we area an amazing team and many I am friends with outside of work. I love my supervisor - she is a positive influence and extremely fair. I always feel like she is "on my side". And lastly - the hours can't be beat. Each semester I hand her my school schedule, and she and her boss come up with my work schedule to fit with it.

Dislikes: my actual job is very mundane, monotonous, and repetitive. Oftentimes I deal with crabby patients who blame me for things that didn't involve me. But I know what I do matters and this position is a great stepping stone to where I will go within the company.

I like my job and the people I work with. It is always challenging because of the accounts I work on which are always new and changing.

This being said, I would MUCH rather stay home with DS. In fact, I've vowed to take at least 6 months off for my next baby instead of only 12 weeks. But the problem is (which is a good problem to have) I make too damn much $. I'm very blessed to be in this position, but at the same time it makes it a no-brainer for our family that I need to keep working.

I'm a teacher and I adore my job. I haven't returned back to work yet (still on maternity leave), but even though I love my job I imagine it'll be incredibly difficult. No matter how much I love my job I can confidently say I would MUCH rather stay at home wit my son!

Dislikes: It's exhausting, the schedule isn't at all flexible, and the pay is less than stellar.

Can I play even though I work at home mostly?

I hate my job. I'm a lawyer (civil litigation).

Likes: Super incredibly flexible since I work at home mostly, I don't work a lot of nights or weekends unless I have a trial coming up, pay is good considering the hours, every now and then I get to help a client I really like.

Dislikes: The law generally (I swear we have the stupidest system of accomplishing anything), dealing with insurance companies, clients who mostly don't listen to my advice, dealing with angry people basically 100% of the time, trying to collect judgments

I love my job!! I'm really lucky that I work in a great clinic and I really have a lot of autonomy. I love working with mostly kids and my coworkers are great. I also really like getting my loans paid off for doing what I'm passionate about.

I am thinking about specializing in a few years, but even if I don't, I'm happy

I love my job (RN), currently in ER.

LIKES: The people, interacting with patients, variety, excitement, paperwork (yeah, I actually like this), doing procedures, making a difference in someone's day.

DISLIKES: The people, the patients, the politics

I like my job & career even though it's not my dream job (working for myself). I'm making a difference every day and I do work that makes me feel good. I'm ultimately in the field I will stay in as long as I'm employed by someone else.

I would make my current job more family-friendly and raise my salary. I am taking a lunch/dinner break right now because we are working on a federal grant due tomorrow--I bring work home a lot and am not paid enough for that!

While my job may not be my passion, i like what i do.

LIKES: Super flexible as I can WFH whenever i can and go to appointments whenever i need to. Great manager and income, lots of potential for growth and advancement. I love that i can shut down at 4:30 and focus my attention on LO. Also, even on days where i WOH, the commute is short.

DISLIKES: Sometimes work takes over my life and lately i've been working late into the evening after LO goes to bed. Sometimes my coworkers annoy me, but that's when i choose to WFH!

I'm exactly like you! My career is not my end all, and it is a means to an end. I like my job, but it's not because of what I do on a day-to-day basis...

LIKES: good manager, great coworkers, short commute, flexible schedule (I manage my own time without micromanagement and WFH a few times a week), stable income.

DISLIKES: just the usual company politics, reorgs, lack of communication at times. Not anything I'm passionate about, and job can be mundane.
