@macintosh: Just got the take and toss ones without the straw and he doesn't like them yet... I keep trying with just water though!

@paigeface: take n toss are the easiest, but if your LO is a thrower they can pop open. I fill up the cup so ge probably drinks 8 ounces.

@macintosh: Awesome! I am hoping this is what happens for us. What straw cup did you use? How much milk do you give in the AM?

A few days before 1, I introduced cows milk in a straw cup. He liked it right away and I was able to stop using bottles at 1. Now at 15 months I still get him a cup of milk first thing every morning. That buys me time to get up and get breakfast ready.

@paigeface: I don't think the amount of milk is a problem at all! DD at 11 months was driknig formula
5 oz breakfast
5 oz lunch
5 oz and afternoon snack
5 oz dinner
So around 20 oz a day
She did however NEVER take a bottle from 3 months so was on a straw cup at 6 months old
We did WCM at 1 and she had no issues with it at all, didn't really like it cold at first but that only last a week or two.

My LO who is now 16 months has been on the same schedule since 12 months:
6am - wakes up and gets 2-3 oz of milk
7am - snack (banana or Cheerios typically)
9am - breakfast with 6 oz milk
12pm - lunch with 6 oz milk
3:30 - snack with water
5:30- dinner with 6 oz of milk

So I don't think your 4 bottles per day is a problem. That's 20 oz which is about what my LO gets too. 16-24 oz is the goal at 12 mo.

ETA: gets water throughout the day as well

I started offering DS a sippy cup with water at meal times around 11 months. He never drank much at first and took him a while to get used to it. I started first with limiting the amount of bottles he was getting and made sure he was eating enough solids. I always offered him a sippy cup with meals. I managed to limit the bottles to one first thing in the morning and bedtime bottle. I then switched him to cows milk off of formula. At 14 months now he gets a 4 oz bottle of milk as soon as he wakes up and 12 oz. of milk at bedtime. Everything else is water in a sippy.

@paigeface: I honestly can't remember! He is 4.5 now. We were doing formula too and I think we mixed and decreased formula until he was completely on cow's milk.

Also, we just switched from a bottle to a sippy cup. We didn't actually take anything away if you know what I mean? So he would still get a sippy of milk in the morning, usually 2 cups at daycare (he never drank the whole cup at once, he would have a little with snack then some at lunch, then some more at afternoon snack) and then one before bed.

If it makes you feel any better my son is 5 and he still drinks milk in the morning and before bed, out of a cup.

It's decreased significantly, from 11 ounces to 4 or so over the years, but he still wants it and I have no issues giving it to him.

@KT326: That is great advice. I may try that. Did your LO have any trouble adjusting to regular cow's milk?

@MamaG: Oh that is so nice! No, I actually take him to work with me right now (I work for the family business) so I am on my own. I've tried to skip the third bottle all together but has only worked a handful of times.

We did it very gradually. First, we started whole cows milk in bottles once he turned one. He still got 3-4 bottles a day at that point. We didn't start weaning from the bottle until he was closer to 15 months. By then he was only getting two bottles, one in the morning and one at night. We switched to a soft spout sippy that was similar to a bottle but had handles. Once he got that we switched to a hard spout.

Our pediatrician was not concerned at all with that timeline. She said as long as it was completely done with bottles before 18 months we were fine. They start to form attachments at 18 months which makes it harder to take something away.

Is an earlier breakfast an option? My kiddos ate breakfast at daycare at that age and it was served starting at 7:30.

If you aren't having success with the cup yet, I might suggest decreasing the volume in the bottles.

Are you using a daycare provider? Are they willing/able to help? My daycare blessed me with weaning both kiddos.

We are still currently working on the sippy cup problems I posted about last week with no luck yet! http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/sippy-cup-problems

This LO just loves his bottles. I wanted to ask you ladies about weaning. Our LO has been formula fed since he was 3 months. He's 11 months and we are still around 4 bottles a day 5oz a bottle. My pediatrician says he's weaning himself but we've been stuck at these 4 bottles for a few months now. He gets 3 meals a day and two snacks in between. Every morning around 7:00am he screams for his bottle (he has regular solid breakfast at 8:30am) how can I replace that one we he turns one? Will he do it on his own?
