thanks for all the replies! definitely good to know. I wish that shipping wasn't so damn expensive, because if there is a formula we end up not using (say, similac!) I could give all this to one of you.

@MerryC: I would definitely agree! Similac Organic has sucrose as one of the first ingredients. That's basically straight table sugar and not what babies should be drinking.

We knew we wanted an organic formula, but we also wanted one that didn't have a high sugar load.

My suggestion is to read the ingredient list of some formulas you are considering and see what you are most comfortable with. We were shocked at the primary ingredients in some.

FWIW we use similac advance powder and the kids have had no trouble at all. We also didn't like how thick the liquid newborn stuff was, both similac and enfamil from the hospital.

We supplemented with Similac Advanced for 1.5 months. I admit that I used Similac because it was provided by the hospital, and I had received samples at home (convenience). If I could do things differently, I would probably choose Earth's Best.

We use Enfamil Gentlease for her tummy issues. Ped advised not to switch formulas too much/too often as it can upset their systems and then you don't know whether their issues are caused by the formula, or by the switching. We buy it on Amazon, and it's basically $103/month.

I plan to BF but we did discuss formula during an infant care class with our ped. He said we should always call him before switching brands. It's OK to just change it one day, but he said once you switch you should stick with a formula for two weeks before deciding if it's working for your LO since it takes a whole for their body to totally adjust.

@sorrycharlie: We just switched completely. When we switched it was because the formula that she was on wasn't working for her because it was giving her constipation or another problem so we wanted to try something else.

When we started on formula and every time we switched we asked our doctor first. I was planning on breastfeeding so I didn't do any formula research ahead of time and knew nothing about it, so I just felt better getting their opinion on it. Plus for us they know what is best for constipation, reflux, etc. and since our LO was having issues they were able to lead us in the right direction.

With DD we got a TON of Similac samples and although I mainly BF we had to supplement some. We used the Similac initially and then switched to Enfamil (my sister works for a doctor's office and gave me some of what they got so we ended up not having to buy any). We just switched one day and didn't have any problems, although I have heard of babies having a preference of one over another brand.

This time around we didn't get nearly as many samples so I am just using Enfamil from the start.

@artbee: that's what my nanny-LOs used, too! I was going to plan to go with that but I just got SO much Similac formula in the mail. An entire case of ready to feed, and 3 tubs of powder. Makes me wonder if I should start with that because we already have it?

This is going to sound so horrible - but how do you go about switching a baby's formula? I know with my dog's food, for instance, we have to do 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, 100. Is that how you'd switch a baby if you need to? (obviously at some point I can ask her pedi, I'm just curious)
