Do you feed your LO with them sitting upright? And keep them sitting upright for 20-30 minutes after eating? That might help with the spit-up issue.

Be careful about switching formulas too often, it can upset their systems to switch formulas; so some symptoms may develop that are from the switching, not the formula itself. Unless she is vomiting a lot (not just spitting up), our ped said it’s unlikely to be a real milk protein intolerance (we went through this with our LO too). The Gentlease formula that you are using is a lower milk-protein content than other milk-based formulas.

As for feedings/spacing out feedings – can you just give her more formula? Does she really forcefully spit out the nipple after the smaller amounts, every time?

Both of my kids spit up/projectile vomited on cow's milk-based formula, but improved quite a bit on soy-based formula. We use Enfamil Soybee.

Also, DS still eats every 3 hours, and he's 5.5 months. He's just a big eater, and he can't get all his formula in during the day unless he eats that often. He does take 6 ounce bottles 1-2 times/day, but most often, he's still doing just 4 ounce bottles.

There's a formula with how much to feed your LO formula. It's (2.5 ounces X LO's weight) / (how many times you feed her in a day). I followed that with my oldest after I stopped nursing him and it worked well.

I have no advice on spit up b/c he was drinking Alimentum due to dairy and soy protein allergies.

@anacarlin: Thanks, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I think we are going to swtich to Enfamil AR and see if it helps any.

Thanks ladies!

@babynumber1: my DD spits up A LOT! We use similac advance. Ped said switching probably wouldnt help and will go away when we introduce more solids. I was even concerned about how much she spits up but ped said it was normal and some babies spit up more than others. Tried Zantac and rice cereal, burpin every ounce, feeding upright, slow nipples etc.... Nothing helped. She doesn't complain so I'm sure she's fine :) I think it's just a Normal FTM worry. DD is 4.5 months and eats 4-6 oz every 2 hours. 7 bottles a day.

My baby had bad spit up due to reflux and I swear by Similac Spit Up Formula. It has rice starch and has done wonder for my kiddo. I hope things get better.

At 16 weeks, my son was eating 4oz every 2-3 hours. He had terrible reflux and spit-up, both on breast and formula, though it was definitely worse on formula. After trying Similac Advance and Enfamil AR, we switched to Alimentum Ready to Feed, and it has been so much better. He also gets 1/2 teaspoon of rice cereal per oz added to help with the spit up and it has been a life changer at this point. He was gaining weight fine, but his reflux was really painful, so we had to keep trying to find a solution.

Some babies just spit up a lot. You said that she spits up on breastmilk, too, so it might not be formula related. So I wouldn't switch formulas just yet. I would try a slower nipple or more burping while feeding. I used to burp my LO after every oz.

@babynumber1: some babies also are just 'spitters'. my mom had 3 and she said i was the only one that spit up and she said sometimes i'd give back the whole bottle! my son is the same way. if the doc was concerned about the spitting up i'm sure they'd say something, but if you're concerned take her back in. but i would try different formula and/or bottles to see if that helps. also, maybe try to give a little more formula to see if she takes it and waits longer between feedings. start by giving an extra ounce or so.

@Mrsbells: Thats what we use, and I love them. the spitup seems to be worse when we used Avent bottles. She also spit up when straight from the breast.

@brownie: I don't know much about milk intolerance, but that would make since. I'm going to research more about it. Thanks.

@looch: At her 2 month appt she was in 1% for height and 58% for weight, so she wasn't concerned. She also said that it would look like a lot more spitup than it really is. Hers is a TON though. I am from a family with lots and lots of babies and everyone comments about how much she spits up. It is def not a normal amount. We may have to try to Goodstart if everyone has had good results with it.

@babynumber1: I know it looks like a lot of spit up, but I read somewhere that it is usually less than a teaspoon. Another thing you could try is a slower flow nipple.

If you think there's a problem, like not gaining weight, then trust your instincts and go back to the doctor. If the ped doesn't cooperate, see someone else in the practice or get a referral for a GI specialist.

@babynumber1: we use gerber good start - supposedly breaks down the proteins so it's easier to digest. it also has probiotics.

would you be open to using a pacifier? maybe she just wants to suck?

good luck!

@looch: We have been back to the Ped since starting formula, since she just was switched over. When I asked about how much she was spitting up on BM she said it was normal. We are using Enfamil Gentleease formula. I am hesitant to try another formula since she spit up so bad on BM also.

What does your ped say about the spitting up? Is your LO gaining weight at a rate that your ped feels is okay?

It could be the formula is causing issues, what kinds are you using? We had good luck with Gerber Good Start.

With the spit up and wanting to eat constantly, I wonder if it could be a milk intolerance. You may need a nutragemin or allumentum formula. Or reflux in general and some Zantac (prescription) may help.

I had to wean LO off of BF 3 weeks ago after having an emergency appendectomy. My breastmilk dried up completely after surgery, despite pumping and dumping. On BM LO was eating 2.5oz every 2 hours. Now that she is on formula, we were hoping to spread it out some, but she is taking 3oz every 2 hours. She is 16 weeks old. She gets 4oz at bedtime and in the middle of the night. She has terrible spit up issues (even while on BM) and it seems to be worse when she gets more formula. She also still wants to eat every 2.5 hours on 4oz.

Any advice? From what I have found, most babies are eating 6oz every 3-4 hours by now. Has anyone else had a LO that like to eat so often?

She is around 12.5 pounds now and is very short (always in 1%%).
