My LO had surgery at 7 months and was under for a little over an hour. No sweat! He came xout fine. For us the challenge was getting him home before the caudal block wore off. Good luck with everything! Both my son and I had surgery in 2015 so I think having done it myself helped calm my nerves for him.

@mrbee: Thanks! :)

@travellingbee: Thanks for letting me know your experience. I'm glad to hear you LO was fine almost right after it!

@Mama Bird: Thanks for confirming what mr.bee said! I do feel a lot more at ease.

@StbHisMrs: Wow I thought my quote was an arm and a leg!!! Thank you for the eating tip! I will definitely keep that in mind. I just got warn about having a fever so I canceled all his kid activities for the weekend before the appointment except for his brother's first birthday (bad timing). We plan to just make sure we wipe / wash his hands a lot at the party. Haha.

@Truth Bombs: Thank you! I just asked my husband if he went under ever and he did for wisdom teeth and he did fine. I went under for wisdom teeth and recently for complication due to the birth of my second son. We both had no issues during those times. So we are good there!! Very comforting!

@Raindrop: when my LO got tubes the anesthesiologist told me it's basically a 1 in a million chance that there would be any issue if the child has no family history of bad reactions to anesthesia and it's just not something they worry over. Since my husband and I had both been put under without issue that gave me a lot of comfort.

@Raindrop: You're welcome :wink:
Also her procedure was done at a pediatrics dental office, the anthesiologist was present the entire time (to the tune of $740/hour) and he came out to assure us all was well twice. Another thing, follow the food and drink guidelines very closely, even if/when your appointment is pushed back a couple hours. We watched one child get sent home for having broth that wasn't clear before coming in. Our appointment was pushed back 1.5 hours, and the person after us close to 2.5 hours due to the first patients procedure taking longer than anticipated.

@mrbee: this! If a dentist is doing general anesthesia, it's not very well regulated and it's important to make sure there's an actual anesthesiologist in the room. In that case it should be very safe.

@Raindrop: That sounds awesome to me!!

If your dentist has great online reviews + a separate pediatric anesthesiologist + a clean record with the Dental Board, then I think you've done everything you can to look into safety issues!

@mrbee: Well I'm glad you ask just looked it up http://sedationregulations.com/CA/ I think you can see all states here. I'm going to guess that it has to be pediatric anesthesiologist and in Ca they have more requirements than an adult anesthesiologist.

I looked up a few other states and Ca so far seems to be pretty through. *now more at ease*

@mrbee: Yup there will be an anesthesiologist, I'm not sure if it's pediatric but it's at a dentist that specializes only in children. I'll be paying 600 dollars an hour out of pocket for it but I did some research and that's about how much an anesthesiologist is paid pediatric or not.

Thank you for the comment! This person is highly recommend by multiple sources. You are right I should feel at ease because I did quite a bit of research on this person.

@glitterboots: Thank you for your comment! I was looking for someone that was going under for a teeth related issue. I'm sorry to hear your kid vomited but glad to hear it didn't last long! Thank you for giving an insight on what might happen to prepare.

@Lilbear: Thank you for your comments! I'm glad your LO did well. 7 month is sooo young!! That must have been scary. Thank you for the well wishes!

@StbHisMrs: Thank you so much for your comment. We have two car seats in the back of our car we will remove one when we take LO in for his procedure so one of us can be with him on the ride home. Thank you so much we would have never thought of that! Also glad to hear your LO did well! 2 hours!! Our dentist said that it will probably be 1-2 hours, depending because the x-ray she got from our family dentist was not as detailed as she would get with her machine so she is going to do x-rays that day to see if they are missing any cavities they can also fix. I hope that's not the case!!

@blackbird: Oh how scary!! Thanks for the comment I'll prepare for that. I'm glad your LO was fine after a while.

@wheres_c: Thank you for your comment!! Glad your LO did well! Yes I got a second opinion (it is what our family dentist recommended (knowing my LO's personality) and this is what the specialist recommended after meeting our son for 30 minutes and doing a teeth cleaning to get a feel of his personality and tolerance) and I called around and this the most recommended specialist in my area (I'm actually pay out of network for this person). If my kid was a more clam kid I bet I can do what @T.H.O.U did! Haha.

@Raindrop: I think anesthesia at a hospital is as safe as it can be, and wouldn't be concerned about it at all!

I've heard that dental sedation is much less regulated in many states though. Do you know if there will be a pediatric anesthesiologist in the room? If there is, then I'd be ok with it!

@T.H.O.U.: I'm glad to hear that worked for you! I asked about my options and it was basically this since my kid is majorly squirmy. I am going to most recommended pediatric dentist / orthodontist in my area (I called around). So that does make me feel a little at ease for choosing this option. Thank you for the comment. Definitely something for me to think about.

B went under general anesthesia to have a hernia repaired. Honestly it was way worse for me, than him!
They gave him (2.5yr old) the choice of riding in a car, walking or a wagon. They also gave him a choice of flavoring for the gas. He chose to walk away with them. Out of sight they put him under and took him to the OR. They brought us in to the recovery room and he was still under. Within a few minutes he began stirring and woke up pretty much like he does in the AM. He seemed a little confused but we presented him with a Popsicle and that seemed to help.

I'm sure you've done your research, and sought a second opinion....but it seems really rough to be put under for cavities. Are there no other options?

@Raindrop: Our daughter had a lengthy dental procedure done last April, she was under for over 2 hours. She was perfectly fine, the waking up part was difficult as we expected. Make sure you have someone with you to ride home in the backseat. She was pretty out of it for a while, but as soon as we got home she was back to herself.

My DD had to be put under for an MRI when she was only 7 months old. It was pretty horrifying at the time to see her pass out so instantly, but afterwards she was completely fine. That was 2 years ago, and there haven't been any resulting issues. It's so hard for you as a parent, but they know what they are doing and your LO will be in good hands. Big hugs Mama ❤️

My 4 year old recently went under anesthesia for two fillings. For some reason he is absolutely terrified of the dentist. We struggle even getting X-rays. He was out of it most of the day. He also reacts like me to anesthesia- vomiting. We had to get a prescription of something to stop the vomiting because he wasn't able to keep liquids down. By the next morning he was completely fine. I think if I knew nausea and vomiting were potential side effects I would have been better prepared. I don't think the doctors office prepared us for the side effects. They just said that most kids need to rest the day of the procedure

I was freaking out the first time around, but it didn't really worry me at all the 2nd time since they were doing it the same exact way as they did the first time and I already knew how he would handle it. I know it's scary, but it wasn't a huge deal in the end.

@Raindrop: Big hugs. We were faced with a similar decision but ultimately decided to address the cavities one at a time because we couldn't get into a dentist that would put her under.

The first cavity was terrible. But we switched dentists again and the next one went better. Either way such an ordeal
