@Pollywog: we are driving from NJ to NC - The goal is to get past DC, spend the night and finish the drive in the morning. I don’t need a place with lots of fun stuff, just a nice, clean hotel and some food. I’d love to get all the way to Richmond but not sure my kids would be able to handle much past Fredericksburg.

@sharpie: yay! Thank you for coming out of hiding to help. Yeah, we aren’t planning on spending a ton of time there. Just an overnight pit stop before we finish the balance of our drive the next morning. This is helpful bc we were looking at the Marriott but it’s always really hard to tell if you’re unfamiliar with an area whether it’s an ok place to stop.

Oh the traffic in Fredericksburg. It's horrible. There's a mall and it can cause 95 to back up like crazy. So be mindful of your timing. You pretty much want to avoid DC from 6-10 am and 3-8 on weekdays. It's pure gridlock coming south.

I find Fredericksburg to be very generic suburban. There's a ton of hotels and restaurants right off of the interstate. I'd probably stay there because there isn't a ton to do there. There is a children's museum, but we've never gone (children's museum of Richmond). I'm not sure why you chose Fredericksburg, but I find DC/Arlington/Alexandria or Richmond far more enjoyable places to stop. If you need to wait out traffic in Alexandria, my kids love this place (right off of the interstate https://goscramble.com/)

I'm mostly a lurker, but I live here so I can answer some of your questions!

Downtown historic Fredericksburg is a picturesque small city and there's a decent hotel there (the Marriott). Otherwise your best bet is a cluster of hotels near the huge shopping area called Central Park. The hotels are right by a Wegmans (fancy grocery store). You can find quick bites anywhere, local places are downtown and there are a ton of chains in central Park.

Years ago I went to a function there. It didn’t seem like much to do. Then again this was years ago lol.

I pass through often for work and stop there for a gas fill up and mcd’s breakfast.... I’ve never stayed there but it seems like a busy spot. There are a lot of fast food spots near the exit and a car max 🤣

Anyone from Fredericksburg or surrounding area? We are taking a road trip south for Thanksgiving and are planning on stopping in that general vicinity for the night on the way down. Any insight into hotels, quick bite restaurants or areas to avoid would be appreciated. Thanks!
