I think my insurance company told me that only a manual pump was free, BUT that if I purchased a electric pump from one of their approved suppliers, the cost of the equipment goes towards our deductible/total pay out for baby/hospital bills, etc. (We have PPO). She told me that for sure we'll hit our maximum pay-out just with the delivery anyways, so if I paid for the electric pump from their supplier, it would in essence be free. I haven't looked at the different models yet, but that's our "plan" for a free pump.

@hilsy85: I have the Hygeia Enjoye and LOVE it (well, as much as you CAN love a pump...). I hadn't hear of the brand until I came across Oh'Apostrophe's review on her blog, then it started showing up everywhere. It's a closed system, WHO compliant and my favorite is complete control of the pump suction and speed independently. The closed system is awesome since you can share the pump (just buy a personal accessory set) and is covered for 3 years vs the typical 1-year warranty on pumps.

@hilsy85: the hygeia is what I want to buy with my HSA money after my rental period is up. It's a completely closed system - you can resell it OR return it to the company to be recycled. You can't do that with amedas or medelas.

@HLK208: My understanding is that starting in 2013 your insurance has to cover SOMETHING. It might just be a hand pump but the do need to cover breastpumps. You should call and ask!

Lucky! Mine covers purchase of a hand pump or rental of a hospital grade pump for 3 months. I spent 2 hrs on the phone with my insurance company trying to figure it out and find a supplier yesterday (with one customer service person telling me absolutely the wrong information) plus I have to get a scrip from my dr., and the office hasn't ever dealt with it before, so instead of just writing and faxing the damn scrip, I have to bring it up in person to my dr. On Monday. It has been so frustrating.

@Bao: I just called our insurance 800 number and they gave me the number to a medical supply company that provided the pump. I just had to give them my plan ID and they shipped it out to me. Easy peasy. I think some plans have a sixty day limit but you might as well call and ask. It can't hurt!

Lucky! I contacted my insurance company and the only pump they offer is one made by Mebby, and I've never heard of it, so I'm a little hesitant to get it. Also, because they said they'll only cover one very two years, so I'm hoping that if I have a second, the pump selection will be better then.
