Update: We toured a different daycare today (which we liked a LOT more) and they were much more familiar with diapers and perfectly happy to reuse non-poopy covers :). So I think we'll skip the AIOs unless we want a couple around for convenience :).

@MrsCB: Ah, I get it then. I feel like you might need about 6 covers a day between daycare and your time at home (as you can reuse them for yourselves in the PM and on weekends). So you could probably get away with fewer than 24 covers and still not have to wash each night.

I have this hanging drying rack from Ikea that we use for our covers and it is really compact - it has 16 clips which more than holds the covers per wash, out wetbags, and the diaper pail liner. Plus it's 5 bucks and looks like an octopus :) Whatever method you end up going with, this is a cute option for drying the covers.

@MrsCB: lol, yes they do. Also on a fb cloth diaper board I'm on, all of the moms said that the standard practice here is to close up the entire diaper and leave it for them to deal with, whether it has poop or not. That way it 'as easy as' a disposable.

I agree that I would not dry AIO's every day. That would really cut down on their life.

How many diapers are you sending per day? We sent 5-6 when she was younger, but now its like 4-5. I like having 3 days worth of diapers but I wash every two days. This allows for longer time for drying. I think 24 is plenty of diapers to do this with!

@lindseykaye: They told me they just close up the entire diaper and leave it for us to deal with, whether it has poop or not. They've only had a couple people do CDs and they didn't seem too familiar, so I'm not sure how well it would go over if I asked them to reuse the cover.

@MerryC: They didn't give me an exact number, but they change every 2 hours, so I'm guessing they'll need 4, and I'd send a 5th to be safe. We don't have a great space for drying, and I also will go crazy with the clutter of diapers hanging in our guest room or in the hallway every single day. It would be more worth it to me to buy more and do laundry less. Though the more I think about it, the more I think I need a diaper I can put in the dryer.

@jetsa: Wow, that's interesting. From the BumGenius website page on Freetimes:

We have a pretty compact drying rack that I use for my covers that I just keep in our foyer. It holds 18 covers on the smallest setting, and is like the size of a jumperoo. So keep in mind that you don't have to have a big space to line dry.

How many does daycare want each day and how often do you do laundry? My kids are older, but I only use about 12 a day for both kids. I wash every night but don't have to since I have 30 total. But by washing in the evening and letting them line dry overnight, they are always dry by morning. It's just kind of nice that the drying happens during down/sleep time when you don't often need them anyway. And if you are willing to do laundry more, you can save some money on quantity. It really doesn't take more than a few minutes to start a load, but the money can be worth it for the convenience for some people.

We use the Flip covers and inserts for daycare and I have found that we are good with using our stash of 16 diaper covers (we have closer to 24 inserts). We was every other day or so.
As the covers only need to be replaced with a dirty diaper and can be reused with a wet diaper, we only need to send a few to daycare each day. I stock my bag with three covers now (sent along 4 each day when she was teeny) and I've only had her come back in a backup disposable once due to running out of covers after back-to-back poops.
I'm not sure why they wouldn't be able to re-use the covers as you mentioned just for a wet diaper unless that is simply their policy (or maybe they're not familiar with them?). Either way I love the Flip system since it allows us to customize the inserts based on our needs. We've switched things up as she's aged, customized for heavy wetting, etc.

@MrsCB: I'm jealous that you are having this problem because all daycares by me won't use cloth :( We bought freetimes with the intention of sending them to daycare. My baby is due next month so no real world experience. From here: http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?products_id=3101 You can tumble dry freetimes on low.

@Weagle: What type do you use? BumGenius says not to dry any of theirs, so I was afraid I'd ruin them :(.

@evansjamie: I had that thought too, of doing covers w/inserts at home and AIOs at daycare, but I was worried about getting the right amounts of diapers so there were enough to go to daycare.

Wow, great questions! The daycare we plan on using will only use AIO. I've got nine of those...maybe I should buy more? At home, we're planning on using prefolds/covers.

We are planning on CDing and luckily all of the daycares I've been checking out have no issue with it, and will do any type. I have bought mostly covers and fitteds for newborn and <15lbs. I had always planned to buy more in a larger size (either Thirsties size 2 or a OS diaper) when he got above 15 lbs. But after visiting a daycare, I realized that they will not be able to reuse covers because they put the whole thing in the wetbag and I'm needing to rethink my plan.

I prefer the idea of covers with an insert because covers will dry quickly, I can put the inserts in the dryer, and there's no stuffing needed. But instead of being able to have 6-8 covers, I think I'll need 24 to cover daycare uses. I'm calculating needing to spend ~$450 on a mix of 24 Flip and Thirsties diaper covers and inserts.

My other idea was to buy an AIO diaper system, but the biggest deterrent to me is the drying time and lack of being able to put them in a dryer. We don't have a good place to hang them, and I feel like we'd run in danger of not having enough dry diapers. Given that, I'm guessing our best option is Freetimes since they should dry the quickest. They'd also be easier for daycare to deal with and slightly less expensive, as BBB sells them and I can probably accumulate enough coupons to get them all for 20% off, making the cost ~380.

The cost isn't the highest priority, but it is a factor. Is there some other idea I'm missing (besides pockets, I don't want to deal with stuffing)? Do just put your AIOs in the dryer? Or am I way over estimating the amount of diapers we'll need?
