Thanks for suggestion on renters! It's covered and our deductible doesn't apply. Since our insurance is USAA and we do banking there too, they already wired me money on my estimate (which was off the top of my head and now I wonder if I lowballed!).

Nah. I wouldn't even ask. Our deductible on home owners for freezer loss is like $500 or something silly. I hope you can salvage your stash!

Renters insurance should cover the contents of the freezer.

With renters insurance you want to make sure the deductible is reasonable before filling out a claim or else it's not worth it. At least in my opinion.

This happened to us a bunch of times. The fridge broke. Landlord "fixed it". Broke again a few months later. Bought us a "refurbished" fridge. Broke again a month later. Bought us a new fridge. We were not able to salvage our food 2x and the last time, we caught it early so we transferred over our freezer things to our deep freezer. But almost everything in our fridge was lost. By the 2nd time, I asked for $200 off our rent to cover the loss of our foods since his fix didn't work and neither did the refurbished model. So we got $200 + another $200 off our rent. The first time it happened, we understood that things happen so we just ate the cost.

I was also going to suggest insurance. Hopefully you have renter's insurance. That typically would cover it but it may not be worth it for the cost of food vs deductible, if you have one. Worth a call to your insurance company. I know my friend had a cat sitter who broke their fridge or something like that, and the cat sitter (through an agency) had insurance, and their insurance covered her food loss.

Do you have renter's insurance? That might cover it! Or if you reported the dying fridge and they dragged their feet on replacing it, you might be able to convince them to deduct the cost of the lost food off your next month's rent!

Our refrigerator died in college over spring break and the landlord spontaneously gave us $200 ($100 each) for the lost food (mostly in the freezer because we were gone for most of the break). It was a nice surprise from an exceptionally wonderful landlord. I would be surprised if this is standard practice, but we were good tenants and I think he wanted to keep us happy.

I would think no as well. Landlords can't help when things break any better than you can. Things happen.

As much as it stinks I highly doubt the landlord would be responsible for the food in the freezer. If you were in a rental and it flooded your landlord would be responsible for fixing the damage to your stucture, but not the contents (you would need renters insurance for that), so I would assume it would be a similar idea.

oh no! :(

i would guess not, unless he took an exceptionally long time to replace it after it broke? or he somehow knew it was on its last legs and had avoided replacing?

And you lose all food. Does landlord reimburse you for lost food?

This just happened today.
