@regberadaisy: you know, I really don't know. The only reason I know it's possible is that in the 80's there was a milk shortage where I was growing up and the local dairy farm superstore was advertizing it was okay to freeze milk.

@looch: is it still as nutritious after it's been frozen though? I have no basis for my question, just asking. :)

I guess I'm curious why you even need to freeze it? I just bought two 1/2 gallons yesterday of low temp pasteurized, non homogenized local milk and the date stamped is 6/2 and it's good for 2-3 days past that.

I do it all the time. I buy three half gallons at a time, at least, and note the use or freeze by date. It takes a while to defrost in the fridge and you have to shake it a lot, but otherwise, it is totally possible.

A half gallon lasts about 3 days in our house, so the dates are never a problem.

In efforts to keep grocery shopping down to a minimum, I would like to try to freeze the organic whole cows milk we buy for our little one. We go through about a gallon a week or every 7-10 days.

I know you can freeze milk, but what about the expiration date? Usually our organic milk because its only pasteurized not ultra pasteurized has a relatively short expiration date.
