A co-worker of mine bled through her entire pregnancy- from implantation to delivery. She was ni to visit her doctor every couple weeks but she delivered a perfectly healthy baby boy (9pounds even!) and he's a happy, healthy 2 year old now. I can't imagine how scared your friend is, but there ARE positive outcomes.

If I had known I was pregnant at the time....I thought it was my period...I bleed from weeks 6-10 too. It wasn't anything heavy until I had a hemorrhage that landed me in the hospital (I found out I was pregnant 2 days early at 9 weeks). The only thing that I credit to stopping my bleeding, my doctor put me on Prometrium. My bleeding stopped about a week after my ER visit.

And the final update- she had a healthy baby boy, eight pounds and change, at about 4am. She needed a blood transfusion but is otherwise well.

I hope this might be reassuring to those of you in early pregnancy / high risk pregnancy - things can work out perfectly even after big scares. Positivity!

Long overdue update- my friend went in to be induced this morning, had her waters broken at 6.30 pm (10.30 pm here now) so fingers crossed baba should arrive in the next few hours! The remainder of her pregnancy was quite normal, her EDD is this Friday but scans indicated a fairly large baby and her third boy was born in a three hour labour so doctors felt it might be best to go soon rather than late.
I'll let ye know when I know more!

Sorry girls, I should have updated this a while back! She's doing fine thank god, 22.5 weeks now, having her anatomy scan tomorrow, I think. Lots of severe rib pains, but everything else fine. They never answered the early bleeding question, but the large bleed was indeed a sub chorionic haematoma. Fingers crossed now all goes well from here on, but she's doing great really!

Yes.

Does her doctor know where the bleeding is coming from?

My SIL was bleeding pretty much throughout the first half of her pregnancy. She even went into ER a few times. But the doctor knew it was not coming form the baby they just did not know where. Finally they figured out where (I forgot!) and it stopped.

Now she's about 3 weeks away from her due date with a very healthy and big baby boy!

I had spotting in the first trimester around the times I would have gotten a period. I had a friend who had a similar situation. Since I've entered the 2nd trimester, it's totally stopped. I'm so glad because it totally freaked me out. I hope everything is okay with your friend!

Update far sooner than I expected. My friend went to the bathroom about 6 pm this evening and bled like a tap, with v strong pains. Went straight to maternity hospital, convinced she was miscarrying. Nope: scan and Doppler show a baby moving around fine with a fine heartbeat. She may need a transfusion, she bled so much, and will see her consultant in the morning (it's now 9.45 pm) for more info. Fingers crossed.
This whole thing is a reminder for us worry warts that even when they're only tiny and still inside us, babies are far stronger than we think...

does that mean she didn't get a scan at all during her bleed? which is odd that her doctor didn't call her in to check the bleeding.....

With my first pregnancy, I had spotting from weeks 5-10. Every day spotting but it was never red...just brown. They put me on progesterone supplements because my progesterone levels were low. With this 2nd pregnancy, I didn't have any spotting.

I've read many cases where repeated bleeding is caused by a subchorionic hematoma, and it just about always turns out ok. If they are huge (like as big or bigger than the baby's sac) they're more dangerous, but usually they're smaller, and go away on their own without hurting the pregnancy.

I'm so surprised her doctor isn't willing to do more checks, given the prolonged bleeding! Granted, there's not a lot than can be done, but still, just knowing would be helpful. Wishing her all the best.

Yes - my friend's first and even 2nd pregnancies sound very similar. With #1, she bleed for several weeks, was told 50/50 chance with no known reason for the bleeding. She now has a healthy 2-yr old and is pregnant with #2. She also bled at the beginning of this second pregnancy and was told that she has a friable cervix that can bleed with too much straining, lifting, and after sex. But it does not interfere with the health of the baby.

I didn’t bleed as long as your friend – but I did bleed at first and went to Urgent care and was told that I had a 50/50 chance of miscarrying, and then after additional ultrasounds was told I would “most definitely” miscarry and the pregnancy was not viable. It ended up being due to a blood clot from implantation near my cervix – I had to restrict my activities in the first trimester until the clot dissolved.

I’m now 21 weeks and baby is perfectly healthy and normal in all follow up scans.

I can’t believe they can’t get your friend in sooner for a scan! Yeesh, how stressful! Fingers crossed it all works out for your friend.

My friend is 13 weeks now, and going for her first scan in a week. This will be her fourth child , and she's 35 and generally quite healthy. Shortly after discovering she was expecting, (totally unplanned), she began bleeding and only stopped four weeks later. Her doctor has told her it's essentially 50/50 whether this is a truly 'viable' pregnancy, and she's trying so hard to be positive but I think she's absolutely terrified of getting her hopes up. Anybody know of a similar situation with a happy ending?
