My old boss sent his daughter to the Friends school in Baltimore. She really loved it and got a wonderful education. She is Jewish so the religious aspect of the school must not have been too in-your-face.

I attended one for over 10 years. The Quaker philosophy is "there is that of God in everyone", and focuses on community, social justice and tolerance. The teachings work in tandem with any monotheistic religion. You attend Meeting for Worship once a week, where you sit in silence as a group until someone (or sometimes no one) is moved to speak and share a thought. My school was very progressive and academically challenging, but there is definitely a range (for ex: other Quaker schools in our area had dress codes, whereas ours did not).

Quakerism as a religion is incredibly tolerant and focuses on issues of social justice and equality. I was very involved in a Quaker youth group in high school and many of the other kids went to Friends schools. I think they are a wonderful environment for a child to learn and grow up in. Since Quaker worship is done in silence, I don't think there is much 'biblical' elements to the curriculum, rather I imagine the things I mentioned above are focused on. I'm not Quaker but would absolutely send my kids to a Friends school if I had the chance! Very progressive and liberal!

Sidwell Friends is a pretty famous school in DC. Chelsea Clinton went there and I think the Obama girls go there too.

Here's a Quaker finder website:
http://www.fgcquaker.org/connect/quaker-finder

Not all have a school associated with them but sometimes there will be summer school programs put on by the church even if there's no regular school associated with it.

There's a fair amount of autonomy between churches so the quality of programs probably varies a lot, you'll probably have to go to each congregations website. I don't have any direct experience with going to school there myself just where we moved from the parents who sent their kids had a lot of great things to say and there were lots of summer camps through the whole summer.

@Maysprout mentioned it in another thread and I'm very intrigued.

http://www.friendscouncil.org/Library/InfoManage/Guide.asp?FolderID=632&SessionID={70FE1B1C-032E-431E-8BE0-18559BC46E19}

Do you know of it or know anyone who's been to one? What did they think?

How intertwined is the Quaker religion a part of the curriculum?

I know with some Waldorf schools they have summer day programs. Do friends school offer anything similar?
