Same here - horrible 6 weeks to get here but we're getting 12 hours at night and a nap from 1-3 pretty consistently. He started fighting his second nap (shrieking for half an hour then sleeping for half an hour, wake up crying) shortly after he turned one.

We just switched at 15 months. M had been taking two naps and then all of the sudden she was fighting both of her naps and going down so late that it was pushing back her bedtime too far. We switched her to one nap and it was really horrible at first (we were both so tired and I was missing my morning break!). Two weeks later though she is taking one great afternoon nap (1pm to 3 or 4pm) and sleep unto 7 or 8 in the morning. Amazing.

LO is only 4 months BUT before she was born I was a nanny and I think around 15 months we moved to one nap because I noticed that she was having a super hard time falling asleep for her morning nap & if she did fall asleep it was for like ten minutes max so when we transitioned she would be up maybe an hour and a half past when her morning nap would be & about an hour before her afternoon nap. Which for us landed directly after lunch. The first few days she would fall asleep while eating but eventually we got a good swing going & we had no more problems at nap!

My daughter started fighting her morning nap hard around 1 year. I finally just decided that we would do an early lunch and then put her down on her nap right after -- around noon. She caught on right away and started taking one long nap just after lunch. It helped that at the same time she was transitioning to her new daycare room that also does one nap per day. From what I've heard though, one year is can be too early for some kids to switch to one nap.

Now that DS is in the toddle room at 14 months, he takes one nap during the week. However, on the weekends, he still takes two naps. I was going to try to see if we could just transition him fully to one nap but he seems to need the two naps on the weekends. Either he's catching up sleep or we're just boring!

Miss A kept pushing her afternoon nap later and later (like 5pm some days!) and we were losing 2-3 hours of night sleep for the sake of 1-2 hours of day sleep. She transitioned at around 9-10 months and goes down for her nap around 11 which is 4-5 hours after she wakes up in the morning.

I just pushed my 12 month old to one later nap because she was often taking a morning nap and then refusing the afternoon one. It has been a week and so far so good! I love being on a one nap schedule.

@edelweiss: I think my LO is in the thick of this now at 16.5 months. She has been very consistent in her two 1.5 hours naps, but lately shes been fighting the second one and will only stay down for about 45 mins. Her morning nap is moving a bit later too.

I think if your LO is doing fine on 2 naps, I wouldn't push him to stay up longer unless he is showing signs of transitioning. LO was around 11 months when she first started showing signs of needing just 1 nap- fighting second nap hard, skipping second nap some days or just taking a shorter and shorter nap. for awhile I limited the morning nap to 45 minutes so she would be tired enough for a second nap, but then she started fighting the morning nap! so then I just started keeping her awake longer and longer in the morning, until she was going down for a nap around 12:30/1pm. It was a slow process for us and it took awhile for her 1 nap to lengthen to a normal time (1.5 hours-2.5 hours). She also started sleeping in later in the morning once she got used to the switch, and now sleeps until 7-8am (which might help your early wakings if you are still having them! lets hope!!)

how could you tell your LO was transitioning from 2 to 1 naps? and at what age did the transition start? LO is almost 1 year old and takes one 45-minute nap morning and one 1.5-hour nap in the afternoon. i still think he needs the short morning nap, but maybe he'll be showing more signs soon that he's going to transition? or should i be pushing him to stay awake until the afternoon nap?
