Honestly...I think this is an important discussion. Not because Texas succession, but because I think as a nation, we really need to discuss the necessity of the state system.

Yeah, this is neither a new nor popular idea. @MrsSCB: @AggieDaze: I agree! Many people have a flat idea of what a Texan would be like. In reality, my county is the most ethnically and racially diverse in the country!

To illustrate the point. This is the 2012 election results by county, and then again by county and population (so the map is skewed to make the size of each county related to the population of that county rather than the physical size of it).

It's hard because by geography FAR more of the country is republican but when you look at actual citizens it is obviously 50/50 +/- 5% (hence elections.... :) )

Yea I don't think this is practically possible because the country is politically divided but not cleanly geographically divided. If you just look at states it looks like the coasts are blue and the center of the country is red. But if you actually break it down by counties the country is actually very mixed. By and large any large urban area is going to be much more democratic and rural areas are republican. I don't think there is an easy way to carve the two groups away from each other.

@MrsSCB: agreed, and after almost a decade here, I think in NYC (didn't you move to H from NYC?) that people's presumption and ignorance about Texas is particularly cocky and arrogant.
I have gotten in *so* many arguments with New Yorkers who have informed me that it's cool that I'm from Austin, and btw hey they're about to move there!, but the rest of Texas sucks. It's disappointing to see the attitude over and over again.

@mrbee: Your assessment of the U.S. political divide is perilously oversimplified, and in a way that favors the more conservative view point. No one is going to say, "Yes please, I'm for bigger government and higher taxes!" That's just the way political conservatives spin a more liberal view.
I would say most liberals are for a more progressive (rather than regressive) tax structure -- ie, a higher tax burden for the wealthy than for middle and working classes -- and a federal government that works for people, not corporations. I know, I know, our political system endows corporations with the rights of individuals... and that's probably where it really went off the rails.

@MrsSCB: YES!! I grew up in Texas, but feel like people vastly underestimate the diversity in the state and especially in the big cities. I, for example, was in the minority as a Caucasian at my high school.

Apparently a recent study found Houston as #23 in diverse cities - more diverse than many other big cities like Chicago, etc. https://wallethub.com/edu/most-diverse-cities/12690/

@MrsSCB: @AggieDaze: @Anagram: @hummusgirl: It seems like this crops up every few years for a couple of stupid headlines and then disappears again when a real news story takes precedence 2 days later, doesn't it? I know most of us are probably out of touch with the Waco crowd, but I just don't believe this is a real thing with momentum.

Texas isn't going anywhere! There's still enough land that people who don't like America can live off the grid and rule their own fiefdoms. Honestly, what to do Texans have to complain about? Three recent US Presidents hailed from the great state!

I highly doubt there would be nearly enough votes for that. Conservatives here are awfully patriotic. And a lot of the state isn't conservative at all. When they say it's gaining ground, it's kind of like 3rd party candidates. It's still such a small percentage...

There has been modern talk of Texas seceding since the 1990s with little support to back up an actual vote on the idea. This gives an overview of the Secession in Texas

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_secession_movements

"Current legal precedent, as decided by the Supreme Court in Texas v. White, holds that the states cannot secede from the union by an act of the state,[2] rendering previous debate moot. More recently, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia stated, "If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede."[3]"

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/04/19/the-texas-secession-movement-is-getting-kind-of-serious/

I personally think it would be disastrous and my husband and I would look to move out of Texas if by some crazy way it ever passed.

@AggieDaze: I totally agree. And I'll fully admit to being one of those people who lumped the whole state together before moving here. I'd never even been to Texas before living here, and my view was not flattering. After I moved, I saw it wasn't fair either! This city, at least, is far more diverse in people and opinion than I ever imagined, and now I get annoyed when people back home ask, "so, how's *Texas*?" with a derisive look on their faces. It's great! :-)

@MrsSCB: ditto.

It's not fair to lump all of Texas together. The big cities - especially Austin and Houston - are generally more like-minded with other cities across the US vs what people typically think of as "Texans."

I know of some people who a very conservative who probably would move to Texas to split off from us. But the question is how would they visit people like me? I'm sure they wouldn't do it if it was hard to see family and friends.

I don't think the word 'Texit' was a thing until Brexit, but the idea of Texas wanting to separate is not a new idea. Weren't there some politicians that have suggested it?

Also, a country with less taxes.... Wouldn't that mean crappy schools? As a parent, I wouldn't want to live in a country like that. Unless, they would privatize all schools. If people complain about daycare costs now. I'm sure people will not like paying private school costs for all 12 years of school.

Also, what about state emergencies, Texas has had a fair share of them (flooding, hurricanes), but I don't see any politician or even civilians saying 'don't come help us.'

I guess it would be appealing for someone with a lot of money to pay for everything because everything will be privatized. I think I make good money but I doubt I would be able to afford a country where everything was privatized.

Yeah, where I grew up in west Texas, this was definitely a thing. At that time, the Republic of Texas ppl were a fringe group, but I would not be surprised at all if they have grown in popularity in the current political climate.

And the limited government split is a very simplified distinction, because in my experience, many many many conservative republicans are also evangelical Christians and want a lot of government interference in what women do with their bodies, where people go to the bathroom, what religions are allowed in c
Schools (hint:Christian prayer on a loudspeaker is great,Muslim call to prayer on a loudspeaker would make ppl lose their shit). The list goes on.

The last time this happened, there was a terrible war, thousands of people died, and the Confederacy was beaten into submission. So if this happened again, I would predict another pointless civil war that would take countless other lives, all for nothing.

I am a Texan and this is not a thing!! Not yet, at least. I think it's really crazy how divided the two Americas are and how little the two sides interact, in my experience. I don't have a single friend supporting Trump (in my Facebook feed), my neighborhood was filled with Bernie signs (now Hillary), and I don't know of anyone who would support secession of our state. But I now know that my little corner of the world is not representative of the population at large.

The scary thing, to me, this election season has been seeing how what at first seems fringe and extreme can quickly become reality.

If Texas were ever to do this, I'm not sure what we'd do! I'm a third-generation, born-and-raised, proud Texan. Maybe Austin would secede from the new Texas and be our own country within a country...oy.

Been seeing articles like this one pop up in the news today:

<< Failing to put its single issue on the ballot last year, and with the Brexit victory coming too late to rally support for a 2016 attempt, [the Texas Nationalist Movement] will aim for the 2018 mid-term election to convince voters to leave the US.

The Lone Star State was the 28th to join the Union in 1845, following nine years of being an independent republic. And based on its present day $1.6 trillion economy, if it did become a separate nation, it would be among the 10 top economies in the world, Miller says. >>

https://www.rt.com/usa/348303-brexit-texit-texas-secession/

My personal take is that America is of two minds these days. It seems like around half the country wants limited federal government + limited gun control + low taxes, and the other half wants a strong federal government + strong gun control + higher taxes. That tension used to be productive, but now things are so polarized that every branch of government seems paralyzed.

Sometimes I wonder if the country should just split in two, and each one can try out their own policies. We can build a wall between the two new countries, and charge the whole thing to Mexico (kidding). Maybe a Texit would be a first step towards separating the red states and the blue states... although it would probably be a disaster economically and in so many other ways.

Do you think we'll ever see a Texit, or that any US states will ever secede?
