My LO (4 months) recently transitioned out of swing to crib. I had started following the Troublesome Tots method where you get LO to fall asleep from awake in swing and the after a week slow the speed of the swing down until she's used to that, then slower the next week etc etc. Well, I was at my parent's over Christmas and they were all excited because they got a pack-and-play for her to sleep in. I didn't want to tell them that she wouldn't nap flat, so I just decided to try it out. She fell asleep! And has been sleeping in the crib ever since. I think she just got old enough to be able to do it.

@Mrs. Yoyo: we are still in the swing...Ive tried a few times to put her in the crib for naps but she wakes up after 15 min. I tried one aftn to let her CIO but it was a major fail and only resulted in nb overtired baby and a stressed mama. I'm going to try again in a months time when she is 5mo. Her naps have become more predictable (1hr in morning, 2hr afternoon, 30min evening cat nap) and she still sleeps great overnight in her crib so I'm hoping she transitions on her own! Let me know if you discover the secret :-)

@swedishfish: this gives me hope that LO won't be a 2yo napping in her baby swing! Ha!

@Mrs. Yoyo: R was the same way...but magically, right before she turned 6 months old, she started napping twice a day at pretty standard times in her crib. It was like a light switch was flipped! She always hated swaddling too. We couldn't even use the Halo sleep sack with her arms swaddled.

@daniellemybelle: LO is also an RNP sleeper. Tried the crib last night and it was a big fail. He was ok for a half hour but as soon as he was out of the first sleep cycle he flipped out. Sigh. I transitioned his brother with the help of swaddling but this one hates swaddling.

I am pretty strict with naptimes for our 11 week old because she is a beast when overtired. She's been napping in the swing pretty much exclusively & I'm going to do it as long as it works! We are going to transition to the crib for nighttime soon though. Right now she sleeps in a RnP and does pretty well at night, so I am very nervous!

@char54: I'm curious to hear how you're doing with sleep. LO is the exact same way, mostly (one mega nap and the rest cat naps, all in his swing) except that I think he is getting too aware to do the mega naps in his swing (11 weeks) Which means all cat naps, which is frustrating.

We don't have set nap times either at 12w. like @lawbee: said, our naps totally depend on what time she gets up, how long her other naps were, how long she's awake for...... She's just inching towards the 1.5hour mark for max awake time.

Our LO has never slept in a swing, she never took to one. We did transition to her crib for all naps and bedtime around 4w. Before that she napped on our couch or in a cradle. We just started doing a couple naps a day in the crib at the beginning. I made sure the room was dark, white noise was on, she was swaddled and I nursed her to sleep. Some of these likely are bad habits, I need to break, but she naps well in her crib now. Maybe have your DH do a little nap routine with a story and rocking.

We had a swing napper until five months!

We transitioned him cold turkey to the pnp with a rolled towel under crib sheet :) Then evenutally didn't need the towel anymore. He napped in the pnp until 7 months, when we transitioned him to his crib in his room. (The pnp was downstairs and he slept through all noise etc :) we used it because it was easier for my mom our prim caretaker not to have to go upstairs for all his naps at that age!)

I would start by turning the swing off once she falls asleep. My LO actually transitioned from the swing to the PNP for naps easily. I think that because she sleeps in the crib at night it shouldn't be too bad.

We got to a point a couple of weeks ago where M wouldn't nap in the swing or bouncer anymore. She was too alert and just wanted to look around. So, we started having her nap in her crib/using white noise/blackout shades. We established a nap routine, which I think has really helped the transition.

We don't have set times that she naps because her nap times vary depending on when she wakes up in the morning (she usually wakes up between 6:30-7). Her max awake time is 1.5 hours, so if she wakes up at 6:30 her first nap is by 8 (but usually sooner because she is tired earlier first thing in the morning). I just go by her sleepy cues.

Then her next nap depends on when she wakes up from that nap, and so on. But she's never awake for more than an hour and a half during the day. She's 3 months old. I think by 4 months they may be able to go a little longer than an hour and a half (depending on the child) but I'm not positive.

I'm interested in this thread too- LO will sleep in her Moses basket for up to 8hrs straight at night but getting her in there for naps is a mission and a half! Yesterday for the first time in days I got her to take a 1.5hr nap in there but that took 20mins to get her settled. The other naps are on me! We have no schedule.

Meh, DD is 6.5 months and she still takes all her naps in her (non-moving) swing. She sleeps great in her crib at night, but when I try to put her in there for naps they only last 40-ish minutes as opposed to 1.5-2 hours in the swing. So, I'm sticking with the swing until she's too big for it!

ETA: oh, we don't have set nap times either. We do a 234 schedule (based on DD's natural cues) and her nap times depend on when she wakes up in the morning, which can range from 6:45 to 8:15.

My LO DEFINITELY did not have set nap times until after 4 months. I remember my mom telling me "it'll be easier, eventually he'll take two naps around 9 & 1" and in my head I was like YEAH RIGHT WHEN PIGS FLY. Well umm... he did, and it was easier.

Anyways, in one of the non-CIO sleep training books I read, they talked about just doing it incrementally; moving the swing next to the crib, then turning the movement off once they've fallen asleep, then not turning the movement on at all, then putting them in the crib with towels under the sheet for snugness, then taking those out. My baby was not a swing lover but wanted to throw that out there in case it helps :)

@Pepper: also glad (?) you're in a similar spot! I was feeling very anxious seeing babies with set nap times when I had no clue. My mom gave R a Winnie-the-Pooh lovey but she doesn't love it. She actually loves her Jacques the Peacock though!

Following this too...LO sleeps beautifully in her bassinet at night, but will not give me more than 10 mins in it during the daytime. She will do one long nap of 3-4 hours in her swing and then short cat naps the rest of the day. She's 8 weeks and I feel like I should break this habit sooner rather than later but I don't know how

Oh man I could have written this. Except C hates to nap. He took an hour nap today for the first time in a week. His other naps are all totally unscheduled and 20 minutes max. He also sleeps in his swing. He associates his lovey with naptime though, and it helps him to wind down. Does R have one yet?

Haha well, G is four months and we wing naps as well, so you aren't alone! :) as for transitioning, we're in the process of moving her to the crib at daycare (she naps well in her crib at home) and honestly we're just going for it. She naps crappy at daycare anyways, but we did get a swaddle note from the Dr so hopefully she will associate swaddle with sleep and start to sleep beautifully.... :p

Ok two confessions:

1) R, at 4 months old, has no set nap times. I don't even know how many naps she takes in a day. We kind of wing it.
2) She naps best in her swing but I'd like to put the swing away by the time we put up the Christmas tree in a few weeks. Our living room is tight on space.

What are your best tips to help transition R from the swing to the crib for nap time? DH takes care of her M-F until 1 PM (well, Monday and Tuesday all day) so he's going to be dealing with most of the crib transition. She sleeps in the crib at night.
