@mrs. bird: That's why I wish we could adopt from Sri lanka! But they don't even let diaspora adopt (as far as I know), which is sad! They also won't let foreign nationals living in SL adopt.

If we adopted internationally, I would be strongly interested in an African country. While being African is worlds apart from being African-American, at least I feel like our LO would not be the only black person in our family. DH is black, our kids will be biracial but probably be perceived as black, they will have black extended family members.

If we ever adopt (which seems unlikely at this point, unfortunately, as I am very drawn to it) I think it would probably be a domestic adoption for many of the reasons already mentioned here.

we would consider adopting from nigeria. DH is nigerian. ideally, we would be interested in providing foster care & possibly then adopting children of with nigerian backgrounds already in the US. we have a pretty large west african immigrant population in our area so that wouldn't be unheard of to have first generation children in need of families with similar backgrounds. we feel that it would be beneficial for the children to be in a family who could try to maintain some of their connection to their heritage & with my ILs being very active in the igbo community here & having homes/family still in nigeria, we would be able to do that.

@mrsjazz: It truly is so sad, and I just heard statistics for the county I live in recently and there are so many kids in the foster system and a really small amount of foster homes, which means homes are totally packed and/or so many of those kids are in group homes, and I just don't think either of those things are very good.

@Mrs. Train: yeah... My mom always had the same passion in her heart. She said if she had the money she'd buy a huge house and adopt as many children as she could haha :)
Money is the factor for us too. We don't have a house, and don't have the finances for adoption at this point. I'm hoping that somewhere down the road dh will get his break and I'll finish school so I can work too..

If we were to adopt, I'd love to adopt from Vietnam. My grandma is Vietnamese. I'd love to keep the culture alive in our family and she would be able to help us learn things about the culture. I remember reading that the US and Vietnam aren't doing adoptions right now. Maybe someday!

ETA: Just went back and saw @bluestriped bee's comment. That's great that adoptions may be allowed again!

I do understand why people pick international, I sometimes still feel like that would be good but I always come back to helping in my own country.

I would adopt from the U.S. @MrsStormy: While I believe adopting a child, any child who needs a home is truly great, personally I feel the same way as your husband. I actually had to stop looking at the profiles of children who need to be adopted on my city's child services site because I would get so sad and want to adopt them all but my husband is not on the same page with regards to adoption.

I should say as an aside that I do think it's a little different for people with strong heritage/background in another country. Like if you speak Korean and have family there, adopting from Korea kind of makes sense, you know? Or if you worked for a few years in Africa (like I did) and met a certain child during that time, that makes sense too.

I would love to have a multicultural family (obviously this is possible with US adoptions as well) and adopt from other countries, but my DH is pretty against it, he thinks we need to focus on where we live, and I see his point, we have many children who need families in the system now, I would really like to foster at some point. I also would worry about ethical issues in other countries.

@Mrs. Jacks: Same sentiments here. I think there's a lot of unethical behavior in international adoption and I'd never feel comfortable. I'd go with an older child from the US. Preferably 7+ years.

Knowing that there is a much higher risk of coercion and power differential in international adoptive situations and knowing that deeper connections with birth families is good for adoptive kids puts me in the domestic camp... But I respect others' decisions to choose differently and secretly would love to bring a Mongolian baby into our lives... Unfortunately, my reasons wouldn't be pure... It would be because I think those babies are adorable an I'd love to visit and learn about a place that seems remarkable to me.

Oh I'm so there right with you. I am just praying and hoping we will somehow find the money to adopt someday... at this point we could only afford to foster to adopt (well even that, we couldn't afford yet), and I am more than willing to do that :)

@photojane: I feel the same way. My DH is from Ecuador, so I would love to adopt from there.

When I was living in Bolivia, I was staying at a hotel for an extended period of time where foreign adoptive families met their children for the first time. There was one family (from Belgium, I think) that adopted a 4-5 year old who was deaf. Watching them interact and meet and play in the open courtyard was so beautiful, it made me teary-eyed (and at the time I was only 23 and motherhood and kids were not even on my radar!).

@tororojo: Mrs. Jacks just posted this cost comparison and a Chinese adoption is the same amount as a US: http://www.adoptivefamilies.com/articles.php?aid=2350#

that's so sad about sex trafficking :( I dated a guy whose parents are missionaries to Liberia and there is so much sex trafficking over there. She actually wrote a book about it to raise awareness.

I always felt called to adopt a child from a Latin American country. My family has such strong emotional ties to South America and the Hispanic culture. I always wanted to adopt from Guatemala, but they recently closed adoptions. Now I think it would probably be either Colombia or the US.

@Mrs. Train: @Mrs. Pen: If we actually end up adopting, it would def be from the U.S.--there's no way we'll have international adoption money! And I doubt it would be an infant, but young would be nice. I have heard that in Eastern European countries, girls who age out without being adopted are pretty much guaranteed to become sex workers, which makes me want to adopt from somewhere over there, although that may be the case in lots of countries, here included.

@Mrs. Train: same... I think I said this in another thread... but even in international countries. I'd love to adopt a 3-5 year old. In the US I'd even be willing to adopt up to a 12 year old. Every baby needs a home and a family no matter their age.

I used to think about international adoption but if I were to ever adopt again it would be an older child from the US. The fact that so many age out of the system without ever finding a family breaks my heart. I wish I could be a mother to all of them.
