We serve frozen berries year round. Sometimes they ask for frozen even if we have fresh. I don't thaw them and wouldn't send to school because they get mushy. Instead I would probably send things like apples, pears, bananas, oranges, etc. as the seasons change.

@meadow: yep, my daughter calls them "Popsicle raspberries" (or blueberries or whatever). They are a favorite treat in our house!

@mrsrain: So do you serve them frozen (I know my kids eat frozen peas still frozen and act like I'm giving them dessert! haha)? In a perfect world I would freeze my own......but in this case I'm looking for convenience :-p. Maybe next summer I'll be more put together!

Not frozen berries because they are all mushy when they defrost. Maybe peaches, nectarines, pineapple?

Just to add: we actually freeze our own fruit in preparation for the winter. Can be cheaper than buying it frozen, if you plan ahead.

Frozen peaches are actually good, and way more reliable than buying fresh and hoping for a fresh juicy peach (and instead getting mealy and mushy).
I don't like frozen mango, it takes on a starchy consistency.
Frozen berry mixes are pretty good but tend to get mushy.
But for a messy toddler? I'm sure they'd be just fine

We do a lot of frozen raspberries and frozen blueberries. We mostly don't worry about defrosting, but that's because my kids are still home. If they were in school/daycare I'd send things frozen knowing they'd thaw by lunch time.

As the warm weather is fading I'm thinking of how I will continue to offer a variety of fruits to my toddlers. Things like strawberries and blueberries jump in price and decline in quality in the winter. Does anyone use fruit from the frozen aisle to eat "straight up"? I'm not thinking of making a smoothie, but defrosting the fruits to send to daycare.

In my own life I've only used frozen fruits in baking or smoothies, so I wasn't sure if they would taste as good eaten plain....
