I say defrost in fridge slowly or have you tried like warm water vs hot? It usually doesn't take much warmth for my frozen milk to defrost within a minute if I run it under the faucet.

@sorrycharlie: @T.H.O.U.: Thanks! This might sound weird, but we never defrosted our milk in the fridge. I always just put it in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. So it never really occurred to me to try that instead. This will also give me a chance to see if the bags already have holes in them or if the hot water is the culprit.

@sorrycharlie: this is what I was going to suggest.

We always just set the frozen bags in a bowl in the fridge the night before it was needed. In the morning pour from the bag and then pour from the bowl.

put the bag in a bowl in the fridge way before you need it, maybe? and let it defrost in there?

@mrsrain: Ooooh. Brilliant! Thank you! I guess I'm just going to have to buy a big pack of ziplocks and use a new bag every time, because the convenience factor of just cutting a slit in the corner is so much better than trying to pour it out of the ridged top. Still worth it, though.

I would put the plastic bag inside a sturdier bag and put THAT in the hot water. That way even if it leaks it will be caught in the new bag and you can still use it. Good luck!

Creative thinkers, I need your help!

A friend of mine very generously donated her frozen milk stash to me, knowing that I am having supply problems and have to supplement my 7 month old with formula.

The problem is that, in order to save a little money, my friend stored her milk in cheap sandwich bags. The milk froze fine in them...but whenever I put them in hot water to defrost, tiny holes appear and the milk leaks out everywhere!  :crying:

How can I save this milk? I've thought about peeling the bag back from the milk when it's still frozen and then putting the frozen milk inside a cup which I would then put inside a bowl of hot water...but the problem there is that the plastic is so thin, you can't peel it away from the frozen block of milk without leaving behind tiny pieces of plastic.

The only thing I've been able to figure out so far is to partially heat it in a bowl of water, and as soon as I see the milk start to leak out (when it's about halfway frozen), take it out quickly and try to empty it into a milk bottle, taking out the little frozen chunks by hand and plopping them in too and putting the bottle under hot water for the remainder.

I'm still losing some milk this way, and it's driving me nuts. Any other ideas on how to save this milk?
