@MamaMoose: maybe ill try that...i'm ok with tossing some of it if it isn't all used up in one day, i just would hope to be able to use some of it at least!

@danda: oh that's interesting, i never heard that! but it definitely makes sense that it would act as somewhat of a laxative. it's in a regular (albeit VERY cold!) freezer, so i was a little iffy about the whole 6 month thing, since we'd be starting solids at the 6 month mark.

You don't need to mix it or anything. Just don't give both bags in one day. Colostrum is amazing stuff. You may want to use it on a day where LO is stuffy or not feeling well.

Some moms who do extended breastfeeding are nursing their toddlers and their milk changed to colostrum. It's packed with antibodies and good nutrients but will also potentially cause more frequent stool as part of its purpose is to help the meconium get pushed out.

Is it in a regular or deep freezer? I could see it being helpful to give if your LO starts on solids and gets any constipation issues, but only if it's in a deep freezer so that it's within that 6-12 month recommended shelf life. Regular freezer is only 3-6 months so you probably won't be giving solids yet by the time the milk is considered expired.

I would defrost one bag at a time and mix it 50/50 with current milk.

So i realize this isn't very common, as many women don't have excess milk at first, but i pumped a TON of milk my first night after LO was born, and ended up freezing a lot of it since she wasn't on bottles yet. It's more yellow than the normal milk, so i'd say it's mixed milk/colostrum, and and i froze it in two bags of around 6 oz each. I have been cycling through old frozen milk but haven't defrosted that milk because i'm not sure how to use it.

SO, can i use that milk? should i mix it with current milk? or should i save it and use it in purees when she's on solids or something? or should i just throw it out? the colostrum aspect throws me off, is there any harm in her getting colostrum mixed with her milk at 3 months?
