In my old apartment I had an infestation of fruit flies in the bathroom sink. I used a vacuum to take care of the ones flying around (with an attachment of course - they die from the force of the suction), and I think I put some kind of stuff down the sink too. You really have to get rid of all of them, because they just breed more.

@locavore_mama: Uncovered. I didn't know about the covering thing until recently, so I've never done it.

Use a water bottle or wine bottle and make a funnel with a piece of paper so they can get in but not out.. I'll find a pic.

In the bottom put an actual piece of fruit with the vinegar! As it rots it'll draw them in. Or wine.

@psw27: it's possible? Our island sink doesn't have a disposal. But I think it might be from composting....there was a few days we left the bin outside our kitchen door!

@lovehoneybee: uncovered?
@keiki_mama: it's SO gross.
@Chillybear: oh, it goes away after the freeze? Good to know! I'm tired of eating barely ripe bananas! haha

Are you sure they aren't coming from your drain? We thought we had fruit flies and they were actually in our drain/garbage disposal. ugh. what a nuisance!

@locavore_mama: in one of my apts we had them in our fridge and freezer... so gross. We did the jar thing the trick is it takes upwards of two weeks for them to go through the whole life cycle so you have to leave the jars for 3 weeks to get rid of them. otherwise they should go away after the first big freeze

@locavore_mama: Nothing special, just pour a few tbsps of vinegar in a small Tupperware dish, gently stir in a tsp or two of Dawn and leave it next to the sink and trashcan. It usually takes 2-3 days and I replace the liquids daily.

We've had a fruit fly problem lately too! I left out a bit of wine and it caught over 10 fruit flies! No joke.

@lovehoneybee: I tried that!
What exactly did you do? I put apple cider + dawn in a cup, plastic wrap over the top then poked holes with a toothpick.

I usually have luck with the red or cider vinegar + Dawn. We had a bad infestation recently...had 3 different traps set up around the kitchen.

For some reason at our house we have a fruit fly problem. They're gone now because we never leave produce on the counter, opened foods etc anymore. But it's a pain because then I can no longer ripen fruits!

How do you get rid of fruit flies?

I have tried apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar and the latter did nothing. The apple cider worked for the first few days. The pre-purchased fruit fly traps are just filled with apple cider.
