I haven't done apple yet for this reason. I should just do it and sliver it up.

@mediagirl: i cut G up cheerio sized squares of ripe pear and he does fine. only has two bottom teeth. if i feel like the pear isn't ripe enough i cut it up and toss them in the microwave to soften them a bit. i'm not ready for apple yet...

Maybe I'll just cut thin slices and cut those into bite sized pieces for right now.

Pears were no problem without molars, and apples were ok too since they just used their front teeth to gnaw away. But once got the piece got too hard to hold or the gnawing got old, it would usually end up on the floor.

in just my experience our baby didn't need molars to chew the harder fruits. The earliest I can accurately recall given her apple was 10 months or so. I just gave her a big piece and let her have at it. We did do a mix of BLW with purees and spoon feeding mixed in there too, so I don't know if that assisted in the harder fruits. And I did remove skins for awhile, she would spit those out, so I just peeled them.

Yup! I have given M a whole apple to chomp on, she grazes on it with her front teeth. I also cut up thin slices of apples, pears, etc.

Your M can do it! ;)

I used to remove the peels for DS, since that seems to b ethe hardest part to eat. Otherwise, he would just suck and gnaw on the fruit until kinda crumbled and he could swallow it. I started at probably around 9 months with overripe pear (very soft) and around 10 months with apples.

We do BLW and give R thin slices of soft pear. She does fine with it. I haven't tried giving her uncooked apple yet, so I am no help there. I think our girls are close in age (R just turned 10 months). Good luck!

I would like to offer M cut-up fruit for a snack. We do not do baby led weaning, I cut everything up into small pieces. Can a baby who doesn't have molars yet eat small pieces of apple or pear that has not been steamed and chew it up okay?

She chews everything else I give her okay - meat, veggies, cheese, crackers, etc. I ask b/c apples and pears seem harder than most things I have given her so I'm really just looking for some personal experiences with this.
