LO goes to bed at 8 so we can do dinner out. Usually we can keep her out a little bit later and she'll be ok, but we try not to go overboard so she's not exhausted. We also try to get a two bedroom suite if we can, it's worth the extra money so we can close the door and not have to be super quiet and LO can get good sleep- now that LO is older (20 months) she's a light sleeper. Then DH and I can watch tv. If we are all sharing a room, DH and I will play on our phones or read.

My favorite vacation is camping. LO goes to sleep in the tent, and we can chill by the campfire :)

We're on vacation now in Venice and are figuring this out ourselves! What we learned so far is this: we thought jet lag would work in our favor and we'd be able to have early (for Italy, so like 7:30) dinners out and just put J to bed later than usual. It worked for the first night but he fell right back into his normal schedule on the second day. So during dinner last night he started fussing and fell asleep, and he treated it like a 4th nap (he's 5 months old and doesn't take 4 naps!). So last night he wouldn't fall asleep until midnight. Oops.

So today we just did a really big nice lunch and then aperitifs later, put J to bed on time at 8, and will get room service!

I suppose the best thing to do is just try it and see how your LO responds and whether he will go with the flow, or needs to stick to his schedule.

We are like @brownie. We just toss our schedule out the window and wing it. It's getting harder now that she's older (13 months) and not as willing to just sleep in an Ergo anywhere, but if I hold her and she gets tired enough, she'll just fall asleep in my lap. It helps that she's a really chill, mellow, easygoing baby.

up to 5 months old we did both --- some nights we would make it an early night and be in bed by 7 or 8, other nights we wanted to be out (wedding, big dinner etc) and we would just rock him in his carseat (like, pick up the car seat and dh would swing him between his legs) until he fell asleep and then he would usually sleep through everything :) we brought him to a whole bunch of weddings this way, and stowed him under the table :D

We have only gone to visit family with LO and they are in a different time zone (2 hours ahead)...we instead of 7:30-7:00 she do 9:30-9:00. We have stayed at a Homewood Suites/Hampton Inn so we could put her in one room and we're in the other just hanging out

When we stayed in a hotel, we just got takeout, ate in the room and then cuddled the kids to sleep in bed around their normal time, maybe a little later, then we just hung out in bed and watched a movie until we wanted to sleep.

When we go out at dinnertime, if the kids are iffy, we often get our food packed to go. We try to eat there, but if they melt down, its easy to just head out. But i think that is more of a 2 kids issue than one :)

Depended on the age. Before about 15 months or so, he could fall asleep pretty much anywhere, so we could take him out and he'd pretty easily fall asleep in a stroller or the Ergo, so we had more flexibility. Sometimes we'd bring a light blanket to hang over the stroller to keep the light out for him.
Now at almost 2, we won't stay out super late, but we're also not terribly strict about a particular bedtime when we're not traveling- when we're home, we usually start bedtime at 7:30, but if we're out doing stuff or seeing friends or something, we don't mind staying out till about 8:30 if he's doing ok, and then going back and starting bedtime closer to 9. A lot of that does kind of depend on the kind of day he's had- if we're traveling and he had a late nap and only woke up at 5:30 PM, he's probably ok to go to dinner at 7 and stay out till 8:30. If he's been overstimulated all day, best to go home early.

This is good to know because we're traveling to see the inlaws & great grandparents. We're staying with the great grandparents though. I think we're going to have to be strict with them about his 7pm bedtime. I'm also thinking of grabbing the crappy monitors from my parents to take with us on that trip.

Ugh...we went to VT with friends a month ago and thought we could take LO out to dinner if we did it early (like 6pm--his bedtime is 7). He had a meltdown at dinner the first night, so after that we just stayed in and ordered room service!

So far, yes. Someone stays in the room with her, we put her down at her normal time and get room service or delivery. It's what works for us, though. We're not too keen on messing up her sleep (it means it will mess up ours!!!)
