@Apples4Teacher: My daughter spit up all the time! We had burp cloths stashed all over the house. She improved by 2 months and I want to say it was pretty much over by 3 months. It's funny, it seems never ending when you're in the middle of it, but my daughter is only 11 months old and I'm having trouble remembering when that phase ended.

As far as gassiness, I never noticed a correlation between foods I ate and my daughter's gassiness. It seemed like that issue got better by 2 or 3 months too. I made sure to always burp her after eating, even if it meant I had to wake her up to do it. Otherwise she would inevitably wake up 20 minutes after she ate and would be screaming. My husband was the best at helping her with gassiness. He would football hold her along his forearm belly down with her head sideways in his hand, and rock or bounce her around. The pressure on her belly and the rocking seemed to get things going.

@Apples4Teacher: My son's diaper was full on dark green and goopy (mucus-y) and he had persistent blood in his stool even if it wasn't visible in his diaper. His ped had his diaper tested almost daily for two weeks b/c that's how it takes to see results from food elimination. His ped had me immediately take out both dairy and soy.

Feed on demand. In my experience, unfortunately a lot of pediatricians are not breastfeeding experts. Check out Kellymom for tons of great breastfeeding info. The only way you'll know about intolerance at this age is eliminating from your diet for for at least two weeks and see if there's improvement. Babies are often gassy at that age and poops sound normal but follow your instincts! No harm in eliminating to see.

@Apples4Teacher: My baby was just generally colicky/high needs so that improved at about 3.5 months but it was about 5-6 months when the tummy problems pretty much disappeared because she could sit up unassisted for long periods. I know that feels like forever away when you have a sad newborn!

@Apples4Teacher: my guy had bright, all green diapers with streaks of blood. Kinda slimy and smelled extra foul. There was no guessing needed. Yellow-ish green is normal, per my kid's GI doc.

@erwoo: thank you for your advice and I'm sorry you had a rough go of it in the beginning. So glad your LO grew out of some of his allergies. I've been diligently checking his diapers for signs of green/mucous/blood! So far nothing, but I'm still checking every time! Ps, how green are we talking though? Sometimes there will be a small bit that is dark yellow/maybe tinged with darkish green. Are we talking bright green? The whole diaper is filled with green?

@daniellemybelle: thank you for your kind words! We had a really good two days followed by two really fussy days so I guess it might just be normal newborn fussiness? The spitting up seems to have decreased however, now that I have been making a conscious effort to keep him upright after feedings. At what age did your LO grow out of the spitting up and gassiness?

You've gotten great advice - not much I can add! I just wanted to say I feel for you because we dealt with the same. I was also worried it was a dietary sensitivity but ultimately she outgrew both the spitting up and the gas. It is so hard when you are going through it!

@LovelyPlum: That's so good to hear! So tough to see them unhappy. I thought the first three months after having my first was the most miserable I've been in a long time. But once we got it under control we were all much happier. And then I had to do it again with my second when he was 3 months who has a peanut allergy and then I had my oldest re-tested a second time at 3 and he now is allergic to trees, grass, and both boys are allergic to dog which we have one. Yay to allergies! I guess once you're in it and have been in it for so long it's almost become your daily life. Just getting there isn't easy.

@LovelyPlum: Sorry to hear you're dealing with dairy, soy, and reflux all at the same time! We saw what felt like all the doctors under the planet (ped, allergist, and GI) and multiple appts with all of them with all negative results to everything they tested for; but they all agreed it has to do with dairy and sot protein allergies. With some adjustment to my diet and eating a lot of really boring food his skin cleared up and the spit up eased up. He outgrew at 15 months. Hope it gets better for your LO!

I'd go with feeding on demand too at that age. I did go with a schedule after a couple of months to help with planning out my day. As for spitting up, it wouldn't hurt to cut out the gassy food (broccoli, peppers, garlic, onions, etc.) to see if it helps. If you're worried about allergies, just keep an eye on his stool. Mucus-y and green is a big sign. My oldest had dairy and soy protein allergies even if he tested negative to blood and prick tests at 12 weeks (kind of early but he also had blood in his stool for a full two weeks and non-visible blood for another week or so and full body eczema so they were a little more aggressive). Anyway, he outgrew them at 15 months which most babies do if they have these kinds of allergies. Projectile spitting up is also a sign.

You're just being a new mom so being neurotic is a-ok! You're already doing a great job being concerned. :)

Re the spitting up a lot. Sometimes it's not as much as we think. Try pouring a teaspoon and then a tablespoon of water on a burp cloth. It will help you get an idea of the actual amount of spit up.

I thought our LO was spitting up a lot until I described it to our GI. She said it was a laundry problem and not a health problem. Sorry for the extra outfit changes!

@Apples4Teacher: as to the spit up and allergy, I will.say this: you have to go with your gut. Babies do spit a lot, yes. But sometimes, it can mean something else. One day does not a pattern make, but keep an eye out for trends. My baby spit a LOT, and I just knew something wasn't right. Turns out that she did have a dairy intolerance, and reflux, and a soy intolerance, all of which we are still trying to figure out. So I think your best bet is to keep an eye on things, and if you feel like something is out of the norm, speak up!

Also, I have to avoid broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage if I don't want my baby to be a screaming mess.

@Apples4Teacher: not really. It's more about documenting how long after a feeding they spit up. For my girl, it could be an hour or two after feeding and she would spit up large amounts of chunky, sour milk, which showed my pediatrician it wasn't just the normal spit up that happens right after a feeding.

@Apples4Teacher: first how is he almost a month old already?!

I think go with your gut and feed on demand. My LO was a cluster feeder and I felt like we were constantly attached at the boobs. She was extremely fussy and one of the first things I suspected was gas so we tried gas drops and I cut out a TON of gassy foods. And that seemed to help along with bicycles.
But then after about two weeks she was fussy again. Upon doing research I noticed that a lot of the symptoms for reflux, gassy and MSPI babies were SO similar. I decided to start cutting major dairy from my diet to see. My brother has a dairy allergy and so does DH. After about 10 days i noticed a HUGE difference in my LO.

The only reason I did not consider reflux is because she did not have a lot of spit up.

Definitely burp between boobs and make sure he's upright for at least 20 minutes after a feed.

@Apples4Teacher: definitely continue to feed on command and I think your LO might have reflux. I will say that a lot of pediatricians are hesitant to give medicine for it, but my daughter really needed it. If you can remember, try to document when the spit ups occur. Also, keep your baby upright for 20 min after eating to help.

@Apples4Teacher: You are doing a great job!!!

I think you should feed on demand. It helps to build the supply your baby needs, and as long as you're okay with it, I think it's the best idea.

For allergies, does baby have any little rash or redness around the hairline or back of neck? You could try taking out dairy and soy to see if it's a reaction, but it take several days to get completely out of your system.

I think a good lactation consultant is a great idea moving forward. Doctors are not experts on breastfeeding, but LC's are, and it's great to establish a relationship with one. At 8 months, I still check in with mine from time to time.

Many congrats on your new baby.

@Apples4Teacher: My baby would spit up quite a bit too and our lactation consultant thought it was normal and not a problem. Our pediatrician, on the other hand, felt that he had reflux and that the reflux was why he was so fussy and didn't sleep well. Prevacid seemed to resolve both issues fairly quickly.

If you still feel uncomfortable about your feeding schedule, I would suggest getting baby weighed before and after a feeding to see just how much he is taking in. There's a baby store in my area that does it free of cost. Its also free at the lactation consultant at the hospital where I gave birth. So maybe there's someplace like that where you are. Doing that gave me a lot of peace of mind when I had feeding problems in the beginning.

I am a FTM too, and the advice I got from others that was most meaningful to me was to JUST HANG IN THERE. Its a phase and it will pass before you know it!
