@Foodnerd81: Ahhh I just did an ice pack and it was like heaven! Nipple shield really helped this time too!

@Bernieboo: I did soft ice packs down my shirt (unless I was about to nurse) and Advil for swelling (which I was taking anyway right after birth). I hope the nipple shield helps! I think it saved my nursing relationship this time around!

Thank you all!! I will do some research on block feeding. I have a doula and have access to some LC's and support groups through my hospital so I'll investigate those too. This last feed, I was so engorged that I had to pump a minute or two just to get her to latch. I'll try the nipple shield next time. We used it the first day or so bc her mouth is very small. It didn't occur to me to use it because of the engorgement. I'm going to try to avoid pumping... My instinct was that it would keep increasing my supply so I don't want to mess with that!! Lol

Any tips for relieving some of the discomfort that won't up my supply? My mom suggested a warm compress and that helped a bit. I'm thinking about taking a really hot shower with a towel over them to protect my sensitive nipples?

Thank you all!! So glad I'm not the only one with this issue!

I just found out that I have oversupply with my second as well. I was told to block feed as @Foodnerd81: noted. I was also told to try pumping both breasts for 15 minutes after a feed just once or twice a day. If you keep pumping one side while your baby feeds from the other, you will just be maintaining the oversupply since your body is being signaled to keep making milk.

@PinkElephant: yes! After a couple weeks I could just do normal one side per feeding, though I stayed on one side for a second feeding if she didn't nurse well. Nine months in and I still make plenty of milk but not too much. But like @MrsADS: said you have to be mindful with block feeding and messing with your supply. Also a nipple shield was invaluable to get her to latch when I was super engorged.

@Bernieboo: thanks for posting this! I'm about to have my third and had oversupply the first two times. Every time I try to bring it up with a friend, or even my doctor the typical response is "most women would love to have that problem", which I find so dismissive of a real issue!

@Foodnerd81: wow, six hours! I wonder if I just didn't stick to one side long enough for block feeding to be effective. Did your efforts eventually pay off with reducing your supply a bit?

@bernieboo I had very severe oversupply. Better to do just 1 side per feed and get baby to empty the breast, otherwise she won't get enough hind milk. A little pumping is ok to relieve discomfort, I would not pump the other side at each feeding.

I made so so so so much milk. It was I guess a blessing, but really hard to manage. Like @foodnerd81 I was so engorged LO couldn't latch unless I pumped some. He had terrible reflux and I was probably making enough milk for 3 babies- not a good combination!

I did a lot of block feeding although careful with that if you have a newborn and you're just establishing your milk supply.

A LC may be helpful. Although they just told me "dont pump" which for me wasn't an option. I would pump 12 ounces and still be pretty full to feed the baby. I mean, it was crazy.

I really hated it. But the good news is, I donated several gallons and now my 13 month old is still drinking my freezer stash!

@Bernieboo: I would agree with @Foodnerd81: to only pump when absolutely needed for now. It's just gonna encourage your supply to keep ramping up. Try to put baby to breast as often as possible and only pump for comfort.

I had a big oversupply after my second baby- never had that with my first. It got so bad that she couldn't latch on because I was so engorged and was super fussy from just getting fore milk all the time. Our pediatrician is a lactation specialist so she really helped me a lot, but basically I only pumped the bare minimum for comfort, so I wouldn't make the oversupply worse, and I did block feeding- like I had baby nurse from one side for like 6 hours so she could totally empty it, before switching. I did ice packs on the other side.

BUT I did not need a big freezer stash since I stay home and we rarely do bottles. I just wanted to be comfortable and have baby be comfortable.

Any second time moms have issues with over supply? I guess I'm not even sure this is even an oversupply issue, maybe I'm just not managing it well enough...

The nurses kept saying how much colostrum I had (pumped that once in the hospital to rest a cracked nipple) and then my milk came in abundantly on Monday morning...

Today, I nursed on the left and she was done, but the other side was so painful that I ended up breaking out the manual pump (still waiting on our electric pump, should be here by Friday). Pumped the right for 20 mins and got about 2 ounces. Stupidly, I had my DH feed M the bottle I pumped at the next feeding, then nursed for about 10 minutes on the left. M should be awake shortly and I'm planning to nurse on the right. But both sides are pretty full already.

Given that she's nursing for about 20 minutes every 3 hours, I'm not sure how to manage it? Should I pump on the opposite side she feeds on after every feed? Should I try to nurse her 10 minutes on each side? I'm planning on freezing a fairly large supply so that my DH can do breast milk when he's on paternity leave starting in January and for evenings out and such. But I don't want things to get out of control and have to be constantly pumping. Any advice?
