My OB was 45 minutes from home (50 mins from work)...I took the 7:30am appointment...I was usually to work by 9:30...then I'd just work through lunch and maybe stay a bit late those days - but not always! It wasnt a big deal until the end when its every 2 then every week!

At the time my home & OB were about 45 min from work. I usually took late appointments and left early. They didn't open until 9:30 which was 2 hours after I started work. Some appointments though I couldn't choose the time, the OB's office just scheduled them in order for the day and you got what you got. I hated that because I usually got something around lunch and would have to take half a day off using flex or vacation time b

I'm a teacher so that schedule helps. I work about 45 min from my dr, so I can get an appointment around 4:45-5 and not miss work.

But my drs office is a bit of a baby factory and has late hours, which is one of the reasons I opted to stay there for my second baby.

Some things are trickier - ultrasounds usually involve time off, but at least there's fewer of those for me. With blood work I can usually get it sent to a lab with some Saturday hours. I think I did that for my glucose test last time too.

@Mrs. Pen: congrats!! :) I always chose the first or last appt of the day. I worked from 8-5, so an 8am appt meant I could make it into the office by 9:15, and a 430appt meant I could leave at 4pm and only use an hour of sick time.

I scheduled the very last appointment of the day and left right right after the dismissal bell rang and the kids were on the bus. The dr. is 30 minutes from work and I was normally 5 minutes late but he normally ran a little late too so it was fine. I just had to let my administrator know because we are supposed to stay after school for half an hour (I stayed every other single day last school year for an extra 2+ hours doing work or volunteering for what it's worth).

For my ultrasound I had to book the day off work as a sick day because the hospital is 1.5 hours away and the only appointment I could get was in the middle of the day. So, no leaving early and taking a half day or rescheduling it for a more convenient time. Again, just needed administrator approval and they were understanding. Stinks to have to use a sick day but that's the only option for us.

This was tough for me. My ob was by my house and only open from 8:30-4, and I have an hour commute to work. So I actually asked my boss if we could make an exception for my prenatal appointments since regularly they would make me take pto hours. He did the most frustrating thing ever and just never gave me a clear answer.. So I went to his boss. My boss was pissed that I did this but I was pregnant and needed an answer! They ended up agreeing to it, but it kind of soured me towards my job a little because if I were a man it wouldn't have been so hard to get approval for a special situation like that.

My dr and hospital were fairly close to home but in the complete opposite direction from work. When I was pregnant, I worked 1 day a week from home. I scheduled most of my appointments during lunch on my work from home day and worked later if needed to make up the time.

i always booked the earliest appointment , usually 8 or 8:30 am... sometimes I'd be a little late to work but it wasn't bad and didn't disrupt the whole day. they're also usually running on time first thing in the morning.

@Mrs. Pen: for my first pregnancy I always chose the last appointment of the day and that gave me more control. I could come in early, work through my lunch and leave a few hours early. Coming in late in the mornings just didnt work for me and would have been too stressful. There were times I would schedule appointments in the middle of the day and take a longer lunch than usual

WAIT. Hold the boat. I did NOT know you are pregnant!!!! EEEEEK!!!!!!

So, I tried to get my appointments either first thing in the morning or close to lunch where I could use my lunch break. It stinks. Especially in the beginning when you're in the bloodwork, early ultrasound, appt with the nurse, appt with the OB, etc., etc. phase. It stinks, especially when you don't want everyone to know yet.

I only work 20 minutes from home, and my OB is close to home. I either do morning appt and get into work 1-1.5 hrs late, or lunch appt. I rarely do after work since I have to go home to parent!

I'm lucky because my OB is only about 20 min from my house. Usually I try to get the earliest appointment I can make (she often runs late as the day goes on) and I use a "work from home" day that day and then work through lunch and a little later into the evening to make up the time. When appointments go really long, I take a half-day off.

Originally, my OB was about 15 minutes from my office, so I would just make an early appointment and get to work a little late.

Then I switched to an OB who is 45 minutes from my home, in the opposite direction from work. (I live in NJ and work in Manhattan, and I decided I did not want to deliver my baby in Manhattan.)

My job is relatively flexible, so I would just work from home, take calls from the car on the way to my appointment if necessary, and honestly just work a little less that day. I switched docs at the end of my second trimester, so I was already really pregnant and not really caring so much. Not my finest quarter at the office.

My OB is 45 min away also, which means I have to leave an hour before. I always opt for the latest appt. of the day, and then skip lunch so I'm only using an hour PTO if possible. Of course my first 2 appointments I couldn't get in that late so I've already used 7 hours for those two.

I'll schedule out as far out as I can though so I can hopefully get the better time slots.

I booked the first appointment in the morning, the doctor was less likely to be running behind and there weren't other patients before that would potentially be late and mess up the scheduling.

My schedule is pretty flexible. I would opt for the latest appointment I could get, sometimes that meant 3 pm though. I brought my work cell with me in case any one needed me. Often times I was waiting for over a hour. My OB's office was at best 22 minutes away from my closest stop, but typically I was driving 40+ min to get there.

I'm lucky to be able to just go, usually don't even tell anyone! We flex hours often at work for events and we are lucky no one ever really questions if the time gets put in somehow. That being said I try to schedule mid to late afternoon so I don't feel guilty not going back following appt.

With my son, I would either schedule appointments for 1st thing in the morning, lunchtime or the last appointment of the day. Unfortunately, I almost always had a long wait time, like 45 min to an hour. My office was extremely flexible and understanding though and no one really seemed concerned if I was out for an appointment.

@Amorini: it's definitely the downside of a salaried nursing job. I was initially excited for salary - hoping I'd reap the benefits of finishing work early a few days a week haha. But that happens once in a rare blue moon. Eventually I think I'll either switch to doing this job part time, or take an hourly hospital job at some point. Makes me sad to think about how much time I'm away from my son, and will be away from my new babe, if I keep up these hours. But that is definitely taking a rabbit trail from the original topic 😂😂

@Amorini: yes, it is possible to see more patients one day than another- I just have to meet my overall patient productivity for the week (so technically I could see 2 one day as long as I keep up a total average of 5.5 by end of the week). But it's just soooo much work and time to do more. I already put in ten hour days easily between seeing the patients, follow up stuff for them, and charting.

I will make it work cause I have no choice, but it's a tough job!

My other option is that starting October, I have to start working every fourth weekend. That will give me one day off during the week and I'll probably use that day for appts. So at least I have that as a backup option!

my midwives and OB were close to home and work was not, so i did the same and took end of day or beginning of day appts. I preferred beginning of day because then i could easily flex my work day by staying later which i was allowed to do. If i had to do a midday appt, i might just not come back to work that day, but then make it up later in the week by doing a 10 hour day. We were allowed to flex t hat way too. So i never had to use vacation or PTO for appts. It was still a challenge because flexing days was not always easy with an older child at home and clients at work who had schedules to work with too, but i managed. It was obviously harder in the third trimester when i had SOO many appts. It was a relief when i started mat leave 3 weeks early because i had even more prenatal stuff to deal with because i was high risk and my blood pressure was increasing at the end.

I make them for first thing in the morning. I just tell my boss I will be late and I can work at home to make up the work at night, if I need to. I have used some PTO, but mostly cause I just wanted a day off.
