@gingerbebe: those are great ideas. Along the same line, one idea would be reviewing your investments' management fees. The fees in North America are ridiculous and will eat up a lot of your money when it's time for you to retire. Doing an investment review to see if any fee changes can be made will save you so much in the long run.

We also do the once a month cash withdrawal. You save a lot of money doing one big withdrawal than multiple small withdrawals throughout the month.

Make something from garbage! It sounds totally crazy, but my son and I make things like floating rafts, collages, even our holiday decorations from things most people would throw away or recycle.

Cost compare phone, internet, and what not. Call your cell phone, cable, utility companies to see how you can bring down your costs. If you tell them you're thinking of switching to save money they will try to work with you find a plan that is cheaper, or if they can't compete and then change.

Ask your insurance agent to bid around on your insurance coverages. We do once a year and have often saved quite a bit on premiums or get better terms for the same money on disability or life insurance.

Look to see if there's a Just Between Friends sale or other similar event to sell/consign your kid junk. If there's one a few months from now, start gathering and tagging and organizing the stuff a little at a time to get ready to sell. Alternatively, try finding and selling on a local FB moms group - selling things in lots tend to go easily.

Find a restaurant "copycat" recipe online and try it out. Even better if you do it as a fun takeout takeout dinner party with your ILs and they can bring something too.

Do a meal swap. Make two of a dish and swap with your inlaws and now you have 2 dinners! Works great for freezer meals and it's fun for desserts, breakfast, and lunch options too. Also great for kid-friendly recipes and snacks like mini muffins or baked veggie bites or baby food.

Split bulk purchases, like stuff from Costco. Split a box of applesauce pouches, crackers, two gallon boxes of milk, double bags of bread, the giant boxes of apples or clementines, etc.

How about a coin challenge - both families set aside all your change for a month and see who has the most?

We have a large 5 gallon jug that we are slowly filling with coins - told the kids when its full we are taking an amazing trip!!!!

DH and I regularly challenge each other to see who can earn more using swagbucks and Bing for some random period of time. We like the competition and it ends with us having gift cards, we typically get Amazon ones.

I have a friend who only uses cash for purchases (bills are online). She goes to the atm on the first, grabs her cash for the month, and that's it! She says using physical money helps curb spending.

She also save $5 bills. When she has it, she sets it aside in a jar. Twice a year she uses all that money as spending money for vacation, concert tickets, etc.

After reading the series about Mrs. Gumdrop's spending freeze, I'd like to find ways to improve our savings this year. Luckily, my SIL and her family are going through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University and want to do monthly challenges with us so we can keep each other accountable!

We both have a toddler/baby, so a real spending freeze is a little much. Here are a couple ideas I have so far:

Make 2 more meatless meals a week
Only buy groceries once this month
Don't buy any lunches
Complete fast food/takeout freeze
Documents: create and file a will, update tax withholdings, and check credit reports
Sell/donate/recycle $50 worth of stuff around the house

Anyone else have ideas?
