It looks really cool in theory, but I wonder how it really works in the real world.

I think functional medicine is similarly to integrative medicine, correct? I started seeing a naturopath (integrative) last year for a suspected thyroid issue. I really liked the treatment I received and felt like she was treating the whole body instead of just one aspect.

There are some practitioners that are actual MDs. I would definitely consider going to one. I think what happens sometimes is that doctors get into the groove of treating certain symptoms the same way and it can be useful to get a second opinion.

@blackbird: good to know. I wasn't sure to what extent they were "real" doctors. Totally agree about things like supplements having the potential to do more harm than good if you don't know what you're doing! I am always trying to tell DH's family this!

It's kinda woo, heh. I mean, I'm all for treating underlying issues (proper diet, exercise, etc), but supplements and detox and stuff can do more harm than good if you don't see someone who has a real medical degree. Functional medicine only requires a "certificate".

Has anyone used a functional medicine doctor? If so, what was your experience? My MIL and SIL are trying to convince DH to see one for some ongoing health issues, but we tend to have different views from them when it comes to medicine (as in, we believe in it, they don't). There's some mixed info out there on whether functional medicine is a real thing, so wondered if anyone had any personal experience. Thanks!
