I think it's just an easy/cheap/Un-invasive way to make sure you are growing. While not exact for everyone, it's overall a decent indicator and can be followed up on if it may indicate something adverse.

I measured small in the end and the babies came at 38 weeks. I don't think fundal height has to do with when the babies will come...more to do with the babies' size, but even that's an imperfect science because everyone carries differently. My friend always measured 2-3 weeks behind and had very average sized babies.

I had to get a growth scan at 36 weeks because I was measuring consistently small from about 30 weeks on. Scan showed everything was fine, and DD was born at 39+6 weighing 7lbs 13oz. Haha! I think fundal height is one of the least reliable measurements. So much depends on baby's position!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: He would have been later if it was up to him. Not a single contraction and head wasn't engaged. First thing the OB said when she saw the size of his head: "you should be so glad you had this c-section!" :silly:

I was right on track with DD and had a 7lb 13oz baby at 40+1. I measured a week ahead with my second, until the last week when I was on track. But he was huge at over 10lb and ten days late.

I measures right on track, but then stalled at 37 weeks. I measures 37 weeks even while in labor at 39+6. LO was 7 lbs 2 oz. One of the OBs in my practice told me they don't worry unless it is like 4 weeks off or goes down significantly before 37 weeks.

I measured consistently behind, by at least 1-2 weeks but as much as 3 or 4. I did have several growth ultrasounds. I'm very tall, babe was extremely low and engaged down in my pelvis really early, which my OB basically said was the reason for measuring behind. LO was born at 39w6d weighing 7 lb 9 oz.

I think the point is mostly to make sure you're progressing and growing appropriately, for your own body. I was always right on or a little under, but not wildly high or low, and growing each time. My OB checked it regularly, and it only became an issue when at 40w 6d it had gone down. That's how they determined low fluid (u/s confirmed their suspicion) and decided to induce.

I measured 1-2 weeks behind at the end and my LO was born at 39 weeks and 8lb 3oz, so not small! He was a c-section, but I didn't have any signs of labor prior to surgery.

My BFF just measured 3 weeks ahead at 34 weeks, so they did an ultrasound at 35 weeks and baby was 6lb 2oz, so not huge!

Yep, basically means nothing in relation to baby's size!

I've always measured ahead (at least two weeks). DD, at 40 weeks 6 days was 9lbs 6oz, DS#1 at 37 weeks 1 day was 7lbs 13 oz, DS#2 at 39 weeks was 9lbs 3oz! So, measuring big sure meant I had big babies!

Mine were always way off. With DD1, I was always measuring 2-3 weeks behind, going up to 4 weeks behind by the last month. I never had any ultrasounds as the midwives weren't concerned, and sure enough, DD arrived on her due date at a perfectly respectable 7 lbs 6 oz. DD2 had me consistently 2 weeks behind and she arrived the day after her due date at 8 lbs 2 oz.

Also, I'm 5'8 but have a very short torso, so technically I should have popped out a lot more, but I guess my babies just burrowed in tightly!

Fundal height never meant anything for me. I am 5'7" and gained 40 the first time, 33 the second. Both times I measured 1-2 wks behind and overall my belly was ways small/carried small but had 8+ lb'ers both times. And the second time he was two wks early and still 8 lbs!

I don't think fundal height is a good indicator of baby size either way!

I am 36 weeks and baby has been measuring pretty far ahead since the beginning of the third trimester. My last ultrasound--2 weeks ago--she was measuring almost 37 weeks.

Today, my OB measured my fundal height for the first time and I'm measuring 37.5. She said it's good that I'm measuring big like the baby.

I'm curious though, did your fundal height line up with when you delivered? If you or your baby measured ahead, did they come early? I'm worried that if this baby comes late, she'll be huge! ;)

I had such frequent ultrasounds with my previous pregnancies that I don't know if I ever had my fundal height measured.

Just curious if it means anything!
