@CatchAFallingStar: it looks so pretty in that color! I am generally torn on painting nice wood furniture that’s in good shape. Like it does seem a shame to cover up the nice wood, but if it’s a difference of being used and loved, or put in storage or not used, it’s still better to use and love it, right?

This dresser was my great grandmother’s and I’ve had it all my life. I didn’t like the original dark wood, so I painted it and added new knobs. My dad wasn’t super happy about it. 😬🤷‍♀️

I think the new pulls look good and you can totally make it work as is! I feel like I’ve seen a lot of nice antique type items paired with florals in design magazines lately. Google “ashley whittaker design” - love how she mixes color, print, and wood and it all turns out so charming but not too “old”. Maybe I’ll have to ask my mom for my old dresser!!

@Jennibenni: I think when she gets a little bigger I would do a runner. Right now i feel like there is a good chance it would be used to pull everything off the top, but it won’t be long before she should at least know better (even if she doesn’t do better :silly: )

@Jennibenni: I like the runner idea.

Another idea would be to get plywood cut in the size of the top and do a stone faux finish or just paint it a solid color that matches the bed or bedding color

If the top bothers you you could put a fabric runner across the top! My mom’s done that on a dresser that had the veneer on top damaged and it looked intentionally “decorated” and not just “in trying to cover this up with random crap.” Could find something with purple!

Great swap on the handles!

You could always paint just the top, if that's the only place where the wood is damaged. It would be easy to update over the years, too.

@Lahela017: thanks! And yeah- I’m ok with paying a decent amount for good wood furniture for me and DH, but not for a 3 year old. My older daughter has put so many stickers in her ikea dresser (which I’m planning to paint anyway). But the top of this one is pretty beat up so I’m debating if it’s worth trying to fix it a little, but probably not. There’s always going to be random crap on top of it anyway, right?

I love the new handles, and your choice to keep the natural wood color. I agree with you on furniture cost. It was a rude awakening when I learned how much nice wood pieces cost now.

@katsupgirl: semi final result now. I decided to keep the color, and get still traditional but less super 80s handles and call it a day for now. For a $24 total update, I feel pretty good about it. Then maybe in 5-10 years as she gets older we will just buy her a full new set or something. Or not, if she still likes this one. After looking in some furniture stores at how much the kids stuff costs and how cheap it feels compared to this, I felt a lot better about just keeping this. Of course there are options that feel way nicer but I’m not spending $800 on a dresser for my 3 year old when we have a perfectly good one in her room already.

@katsupgirl: just to update- I scrapped the new hardware only plan. We are keeping the pretty white bed in her room, because we realized it has another level of slots to lower it to a normal, non trundle level, and it’s really cute. And now I’m thinking I might paint it after all. I like the dresser still but the color isn’t working for me, and I’d rather it get used than sit empty in my parents house for twenty years. And anyone who bought it used would paint it anyway. But first I’ll paint the ikea dresser in her sisters room and see how it comes out. If it’s terrible I won’t ruin this piece!

@katsupgirl: I want something like this, but I’m going to a store with lots of options today. I’d rather something I can buy and try out and return if I don’t like it or it doesn’t make a difference. Sort of traditional but more of a modern take.

@katsupgirl: thanks! That’s helpful since her room is purple too! (Which you probably already saw in the pic). I do like how the wood warms up the cool light purple and gray stuff in there. I ordered her a gray and white star duvet cover to go on the twin bed, and will keep the purple quilt from DHs grandmother at the foot of the bed (it was handmade for our wedding so i don’t want her sleeping directly with it- too special to get peed on eventually!)

@Mrsbells: yeah i don’t think I’d have the patience to strip it all the way down if I ever painted it. Once it’s painted it would stay that way.

@Mrs. Champagne: that’s a good point. Certainly the easiest would be to keep the wood dresser and the white bed that’s in there!

If you keep it, do a white bed or something. Furniture doesn’t have to match. My son has the blue hemnes and had a grey crib. My daughter has a turquoise crib and white dresser. I think you can pull off a mix and match look to keep the room more updated!

@PurplePumps: I agree! While I really like painted wood when it’s done right, I do think in five or ten years it’s going to be like, remember when every diy person in the world decided to paint nice furniture??

And we actually probably will paint the ikea hemnes dresser in my other daughters room one day. It’s black brown and went with our old condo, but now her room really calls for a lighter color. And painting it doesn’t seem that much harder than selling this one and going to ikea and buying a white one and hauling it back and assembling it. But if we screw it up, we did t ruin a nice piece of furniture.

I think I’ll try to get some drawer handles this weekend and see what I think. I did take off one of those handles to see if the drawer front was damaged underneath and it was pretty minimal.

The top is the most damaged part, after years of being used as a changing table, plus you know, me as a kid who did stupid stuff to my furniture. Same kid who once spilled something on my carpet then used half a container of Johnson’s baby wash to clean it (lived with that discolored spot until I went to college :silly: )

I would change the hardware and call it a day. Mostly cause I'm lazy and painting/refinishing it well would take a lot of work. And secondly cause I'm of the camp that painting such a beautiful wood is sin. The wood grain in it is not so awful that it's too dated imo. If it were a soft inexpensive pine, or very grainy, I'd consider painting it.
But I think a classic wood like that doesnt scream dated to me. Wood might make a come back and one day all this painted stuff will look dated!
