I've been dealing with this same issue on my right side! At 5 minutes in, DS gets fussy and pops on and off. My instinct is that its some sort of milk flow issue: too much, too little, too fast, or too slow. It started when I weaned him off of the breast shield. And luckily, its mostly over (after a week or two), making me think he has figured out how to deal with the supply. Also, when it started getting better, he started spitting up more, making me think its oversupply. I stopped taking the supplement I was on, hoping it would help.

Hang in there, I hope it gets better for you too!

my LO gets frantic at the breast when she's overtired. She squirms, screams, latches for a few seconds then squirms, etc.

I found it helpful to kind of hold her head still and hold her latched for a few seconds to see if she will stay latched. Also, I have to nurse in the dark, alone, with the sound machine on when she gets like this. Hope you find something that works for you!

Could be a growth spurt and he's trying to get more milk to come in.

Kellymom has really helpful info:

http://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/

It took a long time for my supply to regulate, so I continued to have issues and ended up taking steps to reduce my supply. I would definitely not do anything that reduces supply (like block feeding) before you talk to an LC.

How would I know if I have an over active letdown or supply?

Any chance of forceful letdown? This developed around 6 weeks for me and took a few weeks to resolve itself when y supply regulated.

I had similar issues due to oversupply and over active letdown. Right down to gaining three pounds in the first month.

Here's a post about my own experience a couple of years ago. The very first signs were my DD arching, flailing, clamping her jaw down on my nipple, and screaming when I tried to nurse her, starting right at 5 weeks, after 5 weeks of nursing fine, gaining awesomely, and sleeping a lot.

Mine did the same starting at 5 weeks and until 6 months when we had her posterior tongue tie and upper lip tie revised. The ties were missed by 3 docs (not even including the ped at the hospital) and an LC, and caused major problems and colic. I've posted about it a lot on here, as have some others, so you could search, or check out http://www.kiddsteeth.com (click on articles), or check out Dr. Bobby Ghaheri's blog and website http://www.drghaheri.com, for lists of symptoms to see if that could be your issue. Whatever is going on, I hope you get it sorted ASAP. Hugs.

My LO is 5 weeks and recently has started acting frantic while nursing. He'll latch on and eat a bunch for maybe 5 minutes and then all hell breaks loose. He'll start grunting, kicking, latching on and off, and cry. My nipple will be in his mouth and he'll be thrashing his mouth back and forth against it while grunting.

Any idea on what this is? Reflux? Gas? He has really bad gas issues already, so I'm wondering if that is what's behind this or if it's something else. He's gaining weight great - he was up 3 pounds in his first month o.O I plan on setting up an appointment with a LC also.
