@coopsmama: That's what usually happens. Once they meet the milestone they begin to sleep better again.

@coopsmama: We said that I would nurse her as long as it was after 2. So anything before that she CIO, would fall asleep and then wake up. I think the first night she woke up at 140, but I made her CIO, sleep and then the next wake up I feed her. It was a rough couple nights but then she started STTN again. Then at 5months, she was teething and learning to crawl and got in the habit of us helping her get back to sleep again. So her pedi told us to CIO at her 6 month appointment. Said she didn't need to eat over night anymore. Three nights later, she was good, and 2 months she is still STTN. She will sometimes wake up and fuss or cry in her sleep due to teething but she puts herself back to sleep within 5 mins.

@Smurfette: It's been going on for almost 2 weeks. As I said before, we've not really had sleep issues with him before so I actually don't know much at all about the 4 month regression but just looked it up and it seems to fit. :( Annoying!

Did CIO fix the problem? Did you do it at every night wake up? That's what we're struggling with. CIO seems straight forward when it's for the beginning of the night but a lot harder when it's for wake ups during the night and LO goes down fine at first.

Ha - thanks. This pregnancy was definitely a surprise! Some days I cry about it and other times I'm super excited at the thought of DS having a sibling so close in age. We'll see how I manage the next 8 months.

@junebugmama: Actually, both of those milestones you mentioned seem to be things he is VERY interested in. He gets annoyed that he can't crawl yet (and tries so hard!) and is just now able to sit for a few seconds before falling forward. Do you think that once he reaches some of these upcoming milestones his sleep will return to normal? Again, I'd really like to avoid CIO because it hurts this mama's heart to hear him scream, but will do what we need to.

Most parents complain of the 4 month sleep regression. In our house it was miserable. It sounds like your guy was just delayed a bit in his regression, because it sounds exactly like what most people say happens at this time. He is more than likely getting ready to sit on his own, or reach another milestone like crawling. Since so many of these coincide with this age, it could be anything.

Sounds like the 4 month regression  How has it been going on?

Our lasted for 4 weeks before we just let her CIO.

and I can't imagine being 6 weeks pregnant when my LO was 5 months. Kudos to you!

So, my husband and I are about at our wit’s end with our son’s sleep and have no idea what to do to help fix it. All of us are suffering (especially me, as I’m 6 weeks pregnant and alwaaaays exhausted!!) because of it right now. :( Even though we always said we were not going to do sleep training (CIO, etc.) that may be our only option at this point. We just don’t know what to do!

DS, who is a few days shy of 5 months old, goes to bed easily – somewhere around 6:30-7:00pm every night. We have a good sleep routine set up for him – nursing, diaper change, pajamas on, Magic sleep suit on, and then he goes into his bed without a peep and falls asleep. He used to sleep for 7 or 8 hours straight before a night feed around 3am, then back to his own bed until about 5, and then he comes to bed with us for the last couple hours of the night.

Lately, however, he still goes to bed easily and then has his first wake up around 10pm – and he wakes up every hour or so after that point. He will go to sleep for a longer stretch if we bring him to our bed at that point, but he’s so squirmy these days that neither DH or I sleep and it usually ends up with him waking at 2 or 3 ready to play or ready to get up for the day! He doesn’t seem to want to nurse and he’ll just spit out his pacifier if we try to put it in. He seems to just be done with sleep at that point.

Last night he went to bed at 6:30, woke at 10, and I nursed him until about 10:20. We put him back in his bed and at that point he screamed until 11 when we broke down and decided to bring him to bed with us. At 3 he woke up and did not want to go back down. We tried everything and finally at 3:50 put him back in his own bed and he screamed from then until about 5. :( He fell asleep again for another 45 minutes.

Additionally, he used to nap 3 times a day – (2) 1.5 hour naps and 1 shorter one and lately he’s had 3 naps a day and we’re lucky if they are for 45 minutes. He never used to fight them, and now he fights and cries before going down.

I just don’t know how to help our little guy. I know he needs sleep, even if he doesn’t believe that, but it just seems like he has realized he can control us in this area and as it’s our first child and we’ve had an easy go on the sleep front before now – I’m not sure how to help him sleep!
