My son had some level of this too, and still gags now at 4, but not with food, but definitely smells and visual things he doesn't like (like someone else eating a banana).... He didn't really get going on solid foods until after 12 months because he just kept gagging/choking on everything so it was a very slow process. He's also VERY picky and only eats maybe 20 things.

He ultimately does have some sensory issues - many of which he's growing out of on his own. We have been doing OT for sensory and some fine motor work too.

My son had this at that age. (He's 4 now)

We did feeding therapy which helped immensely. They technically diagnosed him with sensory processing issues, but really food is the only "issue" he's had. I read tons of books on feeding and sensory processing, but honestly the therapy is what helped. Despite the fact that they were doing exactly the same things I did at home, he responded better to the therapist than me. :bummed:

At 4, he will try new foods (with persuasion), and finally eats some meats. It took a long time to get where we are.

An evaluation definitely can't hurt. Good luck!!

My friend's son was like this. Anything with any texture would cause him to gag and throw up. He just needed time to grow out of it.

Given your history, however, I don't think it would hurt to have him evaluated and at least get some tips on how to move forward.

I think an evaluation wouldn't hurt. Especially given your own eating history.

My youngest is the same age and eats everything we eat. Except steak which she sucks on but can't quite chew yet.

my friend's baby had this issue. it was stressful because everyone around her baby's age was eating solids and hers was throwing them up. they met with a feeding specialist who evaluated him and determined that he didn't need ongoing services, but gave them tips on how to help him adjust to more solid food. he grew out of it on his own.

My 12m toddler (baby?) seems to have a really strong gag reflex. Examples:
- We sleep trained at 5m and 10m through mostly CIO, and he did fine. Xmas travel ruined his sleep. We tried CIO again, and he SCREECHED and threw up within the first 5 minutes the 6 various times we tried it in the past 5 weeks.
- He throws up most of dinner at least twice a week. I don't know if it due to overfeeding or stuff getting "caught" in his throat. I think it's a combo of both.
- His only finger foods are puffs, Cheerios, Bamba, cut fruit, and some pasta. Here and there he'll eat pieces of cheese or bacon. He won't eat eggs, breads, small cut steamed veggies, cut hot dogs, or turkey. We need to try other meats.

Questions:
1) Is this normal at this age?
2) If you experienced this, how did it work out?

Personal part: I am an extremely picky eater (only 2-3 food groups, mainly 10 foods) and have a sensitive gag reflex with most food textures or tastes. I wish something like feeding therapy had been around when I was a kid, it probably would have helped a lot. A small part of me is worried his behaviors point to the same problem.
