Same here. My 7 week old HAAAAAATES sleep! I don't have advice for getting her to sleep, but the Moby has been a lifesaver for me!

Mine was totally the same way. I remover asking a friend with 4 kiddos what to do. She was at a loss... If course I felt like I must be ruining my child. But, our pediatrician reassured me and said it's totally fine. They figure it out eventually.

My baby is like this. She's a very alert newborn and naps are a struggle. I've tried to just ride it out. As a ray of hope, she is now almost seven weeks and seems to be starting to respond to my attempts to get her to nap. I would suggest just keep trying things. Some days she'll nap in the swing, some days the carrier, some days I hold her. I feel like whole days are devoted to her sleep sometimes! But it's getting easier, and easier not to obsess. Good luck! I read somewhere that a baby won't truly deprive themselves of sleep to the point of it being unhealthy unless under severe duress, and that's been a helpful thought for me, whether or not it's true.

I have used the Baby K'tan almost every day of K's life since she was ~ 2 weeks old! We have the Ergo with the infant insert and I like it a lot too! But the K'tan is small and just fits in my diaper bag so I can wear her anytime.

I remember reading somewhere (Weissbluth, I think) that up to 6 weeks babies will sleep when they need to and you don't need to worry about establishing any sort of pattern or routine.

My DD was also a very alert NB and I used to stress out about nap times until I read the above advice, and then I just relaxed about it and followed DD's lead. There were a lot of times when I would put her in her swing and she wouldn't nap, but would just lay there and look around without making a peep...so I let her. Eventually she would either fall asleep or get hungry again.

At 12 weeks she's a champion napper and we're in a good routine, but that honestly didn't happen until probably 8-ish weeks.

E was like this for the first...two months? Then got crabbier and crabbier in the evenings with giant meltdowns. The ped suggested i work on putting her down regularly for naps, and voila! 2 hour nap schedule commenced. It wouldn't have worked much earlier.

I totally left my LO to just hang out by herself and didn't hold her. She's now 3 months old and perfectly content to play with her mobile in her crib all by herself so i can start dinner or something. Independent play is good!

@Bookworm: oh yes! put the baby down and do what you need to do! I put mine in the pack n play (with a mobile) or in a bouncy seat (before I ever had a swing or an activity mat).
For babywearing I used the moby at first but not for long. It worked a few times but I found it difficult to use and LO was not a fan of being stuffed in there. Other moms love it though, that's just my experience.
We have an ergo but didn't have the infant insert so actually haven't tried it yet!
We eventually had luck with the baby bjorn. He'd cry at first and then pass out when faced towards me. Now we have him facing out and he loves it. We did that slightly earlier than recommended, but he had good head control so we felt okay about it.

@Adira: I've done so much googling of sleep habits.. Lol. She does seem to self sooth pretty well, when we put her down at night she fussed for a bit then zonks out. She just takes after me, I guess. I hate naps too! Although I could really use one right now....

@Bookworm: I remember e-mailing my mom about this and telling her how worried I was that he wasn't getting enough sleep. She did some research on it and came back to me with "There's a huge range, like 9-20 hours a day! So I wouldn't worry about it!" That made me feel better. And now that I can see that Xander is thriving and perfectly happy, I just realize that he must not need as much sleep as the "average" baby.

And definitely try just putting her down in something she likes and letting her chill! It was the ONLY way I got anything done with Xander! Plus babies being able to entertain themselves is a useful skill!

Any advice as to what carrier is good at this age? I have an ergo on order but I know I need something less bulky...

Oh, I totally agree with @hilsy85!!! We would leave Xander on his activity mat or in his swing for hours!!! He was totally content to just look around at stuff and when he got tired, he'd just pass out, haha. I think this really helped his sleep later on because he can self-soothe without us having to sleep train at all and now STTN, usually about 7 hours.

I agree with baby wearing! And it's ok to leave her in the swing or on her playmat for a little bit when you need to do something. Babies don't need constant stimulation--being alive is enough stimulation! :)

Sounds like your baby girl is thriving, she's just not letting you get anything done! ;) See if she likes being worn (awake or asleep) so you can have some time with your hands free. Otherwise, just try to enjoy every second of her newborn-ness :)

I have the same kid I think! K's been like that since the beginning! I even remember very early on, she went a whole day without sleeping except for a couple of 5 min. cat naps here and there. 4+ months and I still struggle with this on the daily. i.e. Sunday she slept a grand total of 25 min. between wake-up and bedtime. The good thing though, her naps have slowly, but surely increased from 5-10 min. to 20-25 now. Hang in there and baby-wear (it's the only thing that saves me most days!)

@Adira: I saw C at lunch and my MIL told me he had only had one 30 minute nap all day. Oh well! He can get pretty fussy in the evenings, but when he goes down he sleeps 4-5 hours and then a second 2-4 hours (if the second one is short he then takes a long morning 'nap'). I hope he sleeps through the night soon, but I'll take it for now! :)
When he was brand new I seriously worried about his brain development like @bookworm, but he was always content!

@cmomma17: Sounds like our babies were (are) very similar! Xander almost never slept 12 hours when he was little and before he was smiling, I would FREAK OUT. I'd put him in his swing and he'd just swing and swing, staring about, not sleeping. I was always asking my husband "Do you think he's miserable...?" But he wasn't fussy at all. And now he's the happiest little guy! And he sleeps through the night! Still doesn't nap great, though now he averages about 12 hours of sleep a day. :)

Don't worry! My baby was the same way! If she's not fussy, I'd try not to worry. I would freak out because I'd read that they should only be up for like 45 minutes to 1 hour tops, and Xander would stay up for TWO HOURS and then only nap for 20-30 minutes! I could never get anything done either. I remember freaking out too because they say at that age they should be getting around 16 hours of sleep a day or something like that and Xander maybe got 12 a day! But he was perfectly content and now he's a happy little guy, so it's just the way he is I guess! Your baby's probably similar. :)

OMG. I think I have the most alert 2-week old on the planet. The kid will. not. nap. The last couple of days she has been absolutely terrible about sleeping during the day. She isn't fussy or hungry (except during her normal every 3 hr feedings), but holy cow, she just doesn't want to go down! She stares at me with her big eyes, or looks around at everything, or makes cute squeaky noises, but she'll be darned if she naps!

I've tried the swing, her crib, her pack n play, sleeping on me, swaddled and unswaddled. Nope! Girl just wants to look around and wave her arms about.

Sigh. I asked the pediatrician yesterday and he didn't seem too concerned since she is sleeping really well at night (last night she wouldn't go down until flippin 10pm, but she slept in 4, 3, and 2.5 hr blocks).

This sucks for two reasons... For one, I can't get anything done! Every time I think she miiight be getting sleepy, NOPE! Up she gets and whatever I'm doing has to be put on hold. Secondly, I'm pretty sure she's hitting a growth spurt (already surpassed birth weight at appt) but shouldn't she be sleeping MORE?! Am I wrecking her poor brain by allowing this? Even though I really don't know what else I could do?!

Ugh, end rant. I'm going to lose my darn mind.
