@mrscobee: i don't know that I necessarily believe that, either. Some aspects of weight ARE proportional. Most of my taller friends DO gain a little more--we have more blood than other women, and that's doubling. More torso space, maybe sometimes that means more amniotic fluid? Probably minor differences.

What i do know, is that if i put on 20 "extra" pounds when i wasn't pregnant, my face, back, etc would really show it. So I don't necessarily think "gaining a lot" means you're just packing on the chub. I'm pretty sure a good 15 pounds went straight to my chest, though, lol.....which didn't need it

@mrscobee: Personally, I think you should eat the whole damn box of strawberries if you want to. The amount of calories in fresh fruit is so low that you'll be full before you've really overeaten. But seriously, it's so easy to go overboard with calorie dense food, especially if you're American. It's everywhere!

And that really does sound reasonable. I'm 5 feet even, and a little over a healthy weight to start, so I've gained 10 pounds at 27 weeks, which is perfect. 20 pounds would be a lot on me, even starting at a good weight. But if you're a foot taller? Come on, you've probably got twice the muscle mass I do to feed.

@blackbird: I asked the NP today if being tall means gaining more, and she said no, but I don't really necessarily believe that! I am still going with that it is reasonable to gain at least a little more if you are 6'0" vs. 5'2".

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Haha! Besides the few extra carbs I'm not convinced it is what I'm eating that's sending me over the edge, it is more just portion control with reasonably healthy things (like strawberries).

@sarac: Totally agree on that! Thought I had a license to go just a weeeeeeeeee bit overboard, and now it is biting me in the butt!

@mrscobee: I know that given the chance, I'll just keep grabbing handfuls of goldfish until I've probably eaten 500 calories without even thinking about it. Or if I'm trying, I'll have an english muffin with real butter and a bunch of strawberries, and then I'll feel full. It's easy to go overboard with out meaning to when we're so hungry all the time.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Yes, I have changed a little. Like I thought I was fine with a few more indulgences. I had gone so long with food aversions that now that I was feeling better, I had kind of just listened to what I was craving (not talking fast food or soda here, more like mass amounts of strawberries and bananas (to help with leg cramps) and a few extra carbs). I guess I was wrong to do that and need to go back to watching it some more and cut back on the carbs again.

@sarac: That is a good idea on the fats, and a lot of those things sound yummy. I'm going to have to start eating more like that to get myself under control.

@mrscobee: I put on 20 pounds (no joke) nursing due to the crazy hunger - I would just eat and eat and never ever feel full. At some point I figured out that I just wasn't eating the right thing - my body desperately needed fat, and I was just giving it more carbs. So I was never full, but I put on a ton of weight.

So this pregnancy, I've been just absolutely going nuts on the fats, plant based ones when possible. Butter on toast, olive oil or lard on roasted veggies, whipped coconut cream with fruit or just on a spoon. Nuts and such for snacks. It's awesome - I would recommend it to anyone. I've never felt so healthy and vibrant, even with being pregnant. And my weight gain has been exactly as recommended at 27 weeks, at least in part because this has helped me to stick to a good calorie intake.

I think so much of it depends on what your body needs. Sure, they say "25-35 lbs is preferred," but if you eat right and stay physically active, that's pretty much all that's in your control! As long as you haven't doubled your calorie intake or started eating fast food every day, and you make sure to stay active, I am sure everything is fine. Just trust your body!

I was on bed rest the entire second half of my first pregnancy and I basically had the activity level of a sloth due to PIH and then pre-eclampsia. I was like a slug, and I ate a lot of crap, too. And I only gained 29 lbs! Then, with my second, I was pretty active, still working out, chasing around a toddler, and I gained pretty much the same (26 lbs). That's just what my body needs for pregnancy.

Good luck, sounds like you're doing great.

ETA: Have you changed your eating habits at all?

@mrscobee: My excessive pregnancy hunger is usually a desire for fat - which is fun to fulfill. If I tend to that (instead of just eating more carbs or something), I eat less overall.

@mrscobee: I gained 20 some pounds by 20 weeks and my doc told me it was too much. I felt terrible and asked what I should do. She said 2400 or less, cut carbs. I actually ended up losing weight then and she told me not to lose anymore.

I think a good approach is to eat healthy and count calories if your doc thinks your gain is excessive.

Ya'll are making me feel better. Thanks! :) I went to the doc today, and they weren't at all concerned about my weight. The nurse also said I looked great and couldn't believe the scale said 20 lbs. She even re-weighed me. I wonder where it is all going if I am not looking at all bigger? I know a lot is in my stomach and chest, but 20 lbs? Puzzling.

She said I should maybe just start watching it more closely and keeping a food journal and remain active. I’m definitely not eating that unhealthy but definitely indulging a little more than I should. But I am feeling just so darn hungry! She also echoed a lot of your sentiments and said maybe it is just a 2nd trimester growth spurt, and I won’t gain as much in the 3rd if I watch it more closely.

I’m going to try to be a bit more careful, but otherwise not stress :)

I stopped putting so much weight on it (haha, no pun intended) because I gained very little til the end but then lost basically NOTHING. Still haven't! Entered this pregnancy 30+ lbs heavier. I think I actually gained post baby. Some people will gain 60 and will be back at pre baby weight 4 months after. Every body is different, so as long as you're eating mostly healthy, and being a little active (your comfort level) it's just how your body is reacting.

@miramira: I try to notice day by day - if I've gained 3 pounds this morning (true), that's not fat, because that's just physically impossible. So I wonder, did I get enough water, did I exercise, did I get too little fiber yesterday, am I constipated? Etc etc. This morning I knew that I'd had way too little fiber yesterday, my ring felt a little tight, so I know to dial that up today. I also go by how things like tall boots fit around my calves.

How do you know if weight gain is due to an increase in fat rather than an increase in, say, amniotic fluid or the size of the placenta? Weight isn't monitored here during pregnancy so this is new to me...

As PP stated, I think the most weight gain is in the 2nd trimester. I only gained 5 lbs on the first trimester, then 20 lbs in the 2nd! One of the doctors in my practice fussed at me about it, but I knew I was exercising and eating well so it's what my body apparently needed to do. I only gained 32 lbs at the end, so it slows down.

I gained the most weight during 2nd trimester too. I think it slows down after. I ended up having GD so I actually ended up losing weight by 3rd trimester and barely gaining anything.

There really isn't a standard... I had a tall & skinny friend gained almost 60  I didn't even see where the weight was though!

I gained most of my weight in my second trimester. It sounds like you're doing the same thing. Unless your OB complains, I wouldn't worry. They can give you tips if you are worried, though.

I gained almost all of my weight during the second trimester and worried it would be too much but it slowed down a lot. I ended up gaining about 35 lb and lost it all by 6 wks PPand have actually lost more because I'm struggling to keep up with all the extra calories LO is nursing out of me!
