@MrsADS: I know someone who was struggling to TTC and she did get pregnant after gaining 10. Lbs. I've read that the baby pulls some of their important brain development building blocks from the moms thighs and derrière so if would make sense that you'd need fat there!

@MrsADS: I'm so sorry to hear you have gastroparesis, i have family members with it and it's not fun at all :( i'm glad to hear you have it under control though.

I am not low BMI, but i'm very petite and muscular and i'm currently dealing with iugr which is likely due to my body type. If any doctor had told me that possibly putting on a few pounds before getting pregnant would have helped with this, i would've done it in a heartbeat! I'm not sure it would have helped me, because it's my body type and not actually my weight (and you can't choose where you gain!) but it certainly can't hurt, and as others have suggested, may help you get pregnant!

it just may give your body the jumpstart it needs both to get pregnant and to put on the proper amount of weight while pregnant.

I had hyperemesis gravidarum with both of my pregnancies, and my doctor recommended gaining extra weight after #1 to prepare for pregnancy #2. I gained an extra 5 pounds, which provided a little cushion when I started dropping weight.

If your doctor is suggesting this as a way to manage your disease, I would seriously consider it. For some people who have weight issues during pregnancy an extra 5-10 pounds can go a long way!

YES! Not me. My aunt. We were both TTC at the same time. She is super thin and tall. The doctor told her she was ovulating, but the eggs weren't fatty and mature because she was too thin. She gained 9lbs and got pregnant right away.
She barely gained a thing during pregnancy and went all the way up to 39w and had an 8lb baby.
She is back to being her thin self again but yet has a lot of milk to nurse with. She is surprised because I (thin, but not super thin and more curvy) lost my milk supply while she is making lots of it.
So, I don't think being thin can harm a pregnancy if you are eating correctly. Sometimes you just need those few pounds to make your eggs more hefty :)

My BMI has always been around 17-17.2 and that's what it was when I got pregnant. My body fat percentage was around 12% at the time I conceived and I didn't have any health problems, had normal cycles and did not have trouble conceiving. 12% body fat is considered extremely low and around 10% is when women will begin to lose their normal cycles altogether. I'm currently 5 months preggo with a healthy baby growing on track. I think it's fine as long as you're eating healthy and enough calories for the baby. Some people really are just naturally slimmer, weigh less, have less body fat, etc. If you are restricting to stay thin and it's unnatural for you, then that's another story.

My problem was more body fat. I was very 'lean' and as a result my cycle was a mess (ie. nonexistent). Once I cut back on the intense workouts and incorporated a less 'clean' diet, my cycle returned.

ETA: I also gained weight in the process

My BMI is an 18 which is considered underweight. I asked my RE if my weight is a problem and she wasn't concerned.

It probably wouldn't hurt for you to try to gain a few pounds, especially if it will put your mind at ease.

I didn't have this problem personally but one of my good friends did. She basically has a super fast metabolism so it's hard for her to keep weight on. But putting on a few pounds did help her get pregnant (she's still early but looking great so hopefully she can sustain a full term healthy pregnancy).

Is this something anyone has worked on before TTC? I have a chronic GI condition called gastroparesis that made me really sick and lose a ton of weight over the last 2 years. I am doing a lot better now, but my BMI is still like 17.5.

I have read some studies about babies of underweight moms being at greater risk of being born preterm, having intrauterine growth restriction, having health problems after birth, stuff like that.

And I am worried that I'll be sick once I'm pregnant and I'll lose weight (my mom was really sick with me and my sister). So I feel like I need a "cushion" in case I do.

Is this crazy?? My GI and OB have both encouraged the weight gain. Did anyone else try to gain weight prior to getting pregnant?
