A look what I can do game that doubles as table centerpieces? Take pics of your LO doing different things- crawling, making fishy face, pointing to his nose etc. Place a pic on eaxh table. Create a look what I can do sheet and askes guests to guess if he can do it or not yet. The person who gets the most correct wins a prize.

@mrsjazz: lol a knife!!! hahaha... Very interesting... I thought it was items for a profession: sports equipment (ball): athlete, kitchen supply: chef, stethoscope: doctor, money: banker/rich, etc... that's cool to hear about the actual tradition.

That is a FUN venue!!! I love it!! I'm glad you opted for the whole cafe :)

@Mrs. Pen: If you scroll down on this thread, you'll see the venue, it's a cute cafe a couple of blocks from our apartment. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/spring-2012-babies-1-yr-birthday-parties/page/2 We are renting the entire space.

And this list below is from an e-mail my friend put together for me regarding items for the doljabi:

Thread/yarn/noodles: long life
dried dates: good fortune for offspring/descendants
Rice/money: will be rich
Rice cake: healthy and good fortune
Knife: good cook
Ruler/needle (how the hell do you leave a needle?): good with hands

Book/paper/pencil: smart kid (they also leave a computer mouse these days).

The most common items I saw were:

Rice/money, book, thread

These days they make up their own though like below:

Toy stethoscope: doctor
toothbrush: dentist
microphone: celebrity
Baseball bat/golf ball: good at sports
Car keys/credit card/calculator: rich
Wrap a pen with thread: be smart and live long (huh… that's cheating)
tiara: pretty
mouse: will be good with computers like bill gates
Toy sword: brave

ETA: the stuff in parentheses was my friend's commentary to me :) also, she's Korean :)

@mrsjazz: so will you draw a winner for the Doljabi?

If I do a game it would have to be applicable to the kids and adults. I thought maybe "guess Cobi's birthweight".

I'm also having each person fill out a "wishes for baby" card... maybe I'll draw one at the end of the party and hand out a little prize?

@littlek: @mrsjazz: We are doing a photobooth DIY as well. We are buying 2.5 years of Premier Prints Chevron decor weight fabric and we'll be pinning it to the divider wall... in our venue there is one wall that is that fabric type, it can roll away to open up another room (make sense??!)... that's the only part of the room we can pin things! So we'll pin the back drop there, I have a DSLR so we're setting that up on a tripod and asking my brother to "mann the booth", and on a side table we'll have props available. It will be fun :)

@artbee: I figured... with 50-ish people attending the party the gifts will probably take a long time! We have to completely clear out of our venue by 4pm so I'm hoping the 45 mins is enough time. I'm also going to go with the flow and if he gets sick of it after 5 presents either I'll open the rest of we'll just bring them home and maybe have him open one a day.

@mrsjazz: yay!!! so glad another person is doing the Doljabi who isn't Korean. I think @Zipplef said she might as well. I think it's so fun!

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I actually asked HB if it would be offensive to Korean culture if I did it, wanted to make sure I didn't step on any toes - I'm so excited to do it! I think it's SO fun. Question: do you have a suggestion for the props? All I have so far is a stethoscope haha.

Okay so here's the thing - there will be MAYBE 5 -8 kids at the party... Ranging from 2-8 yo and the rest are adults. I took your advice and I'm making kraft paper placemats and supplying each table with crayons so that should appeal to the kids especially (and adults).

I am SO coming to you though when Cobi is older and we do more kid-oriented activities!

@mrsjazz: yup. same. There will be a few babies under 6 months and maybe 5 kids aged 2-8. Have you chosen a venue yet?

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I think it's an awesome tradition, wish there was more traditional things like this in American culture--besides blowing out a birthday cake with candles.

We are also doing a "time capsule" and if all the "guideparents" can make it we will do a short naming ceremony. Our party will be mostly adults and a few children age 2 and under. We'll have a little corner of the room with a playmat and some toys for them, but no specific games for the kiddies.

@Mrs. Pen: @mrsjazz: i think it's so fun that you guys are doing a doljabi! love that this korean tradition has seeped its way into the mainstream :) we still have lil' CB's "yarn" (for long life) from his dohl that his foster mother saved for us. apparently, keeping it is supposed to bring you blessings? even if he didn't pick it? i believe he picked the pen :)

a lot of the first birthday parties we have been to had some sort of entertainment -- a balloon artist, face painter, etc. we had a girl that did glitter tattoos and balloons at lil' CB's second birthday (which was his big party since he wasn't home for his first), and that worked out well. i also had a really simple craft for some of the older kids to do -- it was circus themed, so i had them decorate plain party hats with foam stickers and called them clown hats. it was nice because kids could do them when they wanted and we had enough supplies for kids to do more than one. even laying out coloring sheets might be enough to keep some of the kiddos occupied.

@Mrs. Pen: I'm totally stealing your schedule. We are doing something very similar for our party (including the doljabi!) We aren't having any games, though.

@littlek: We are doing a photobooth. Originally when the party was just going to be about 20 of us it was going to be a photo with the guest of honor, but now that we are doing a larger gathering it will just be an open photo booth because baby girl will not be happy to take photos with every guest.

I went to a baby shower once and there was a game where everyone got 5 clothespins (or something like that) when they walked in, and we clipped them to our clothes. Then there was a "word" (the word was "baby") and anytime you heard someone say that word, you could steal one of their pins and pin it to yourself. The person with the most pins at the end won a prize. Your word could be "birthday" or "one"?

We didn't do games..... but we only had a couple of kids. LO was entertained enough because we opened up the porch so she got to go up and down the step in there, that was game enough for her.

We had lots of food so eating and mingling took awhile, and then of course presents with a one year old takes a long time. And so did the cake smash.... she was kind of confused about what to do.

How are you doing the photo booth? I was originally thinking about it for B's 1st birthday but then I wasn't sure if he would even be able to participate in it.

I don't really have any ideas for games, but we will probably have a ball pit and other toys set up. I was thinking about getting an entertainer (someone to sing, play games, etc) with them.

Are you guys/did you guys do games at first birthday?

We're planning on doing the doljabi game, and people vote for what they think he will choose, and we'll draw a name and give a prize. Should I do another game?

Our day-of schedule so far is:
1 pm: party starts, welcome guests, start eating
1:30: do "doljabi game"
1:45: do cake smash, then clean up
2:15 open presents
3:00 party over

For any lapses in between we also are setting up a photobooth with props and a camera.

Is this enough? Should I do some other type of game with a prize? I feel I should but I'm not sure what to do.
