@lisa1783: It was an excellent deal--and it actually went all the way through this afternoon, so I can confirm it works!

@PinkElephant: agreed re slow leveling up. You can force a certain grade under settings. I just increased my sons and he’s interested again

For those of you interested in Prodigy, there’s a Facebook group called “Prodigy Math Membership Buy In” that collects interested people and puts them in a group buy. It takes awhile (there are signs my group is about to go through after 2 weeks), but friends have had success. It’s $14 for an annual subscription.

@PinkElephant: I think you can sign up as a parent for XtraMath. i had a code so I enroll my kid using that code
@meganmp: love that factmonster website. i prefer it to XtraMath.

I signed up for sumdog but haven't tried. ReflexMath, we have to start a trial... so haven't tried.

So what i noticed is all those websites, also focused on speed of typing. for example, i tested myself on factmonster level 3... got 68 right in 2 min but I am a grownup.. Then i tried the higher level and i was typing the answer as i was doing the 3 digit addition and got it wrong because i was typing the answer from right to left...

I also like this app called ProfMulti. You have to give your answer orally, which i think is better but i don't want my son to use my phone ... so he's only been doing 2 or 3 times, at a level that is a bit too low.

I also recommend this book: math you can play combo.
great ideas in it. the issue is sometimes you wish you had a video to help you understand. My son is 7. it seems more appropriate this year than last year...

@lisa1783: Good to know! Her teacher has access to this now since our membership is through school, but maybe I'll join over the summer. I'll have to take a closer look at what sorts of problems it is actually offering her to solve.

@lady baltimore: I'm interested in speed right now, but we totally do coloring sheets like that on car trips. Maybe I'll print some out for "down time" now instead of just free drawing all the time - good idea!

@PinkElephant: Yes they do level up but it takes a while because each "grade" level has about 20-26 different skills for them to learn and each skill has somewhere between 5-10 questions for them to answer. You're able to log in and view their progress report and see how many questions they got right per skill (they consider an answer correct if you get it right after 2-3 attempts to account for typos, etc)

If you feel like she's not at the correct age level (i.e. too easy) you can manually go in and set her grade level so she doesn't get bored with the questions that are too easy.

@PinkElephant: If your LO likes to color, you could print out color-by-number coloring pages with addition and subtraction facts on them. This wouldn't force her to do them quickly, but might be a nice additional reinforcement that won't feel like work to her. I have also used sheets that are like word searches, but with math equations.

Thanks, everyone!

@JMOM: I haven’t seen this one - thank you!

@lady baltimore: Great, I’ll check out Sumdog! We have ST Math as part of her work with the school math specialis, so she plays that at least once a week and someone else monitors her progress. I’ll have to pay closer attention to what concepts she’s working on; I suspect they’ve got it set to grade-level things rather than basic facts.

@bakingdoodle: ooh, I think a friend IRL was telling me that her third grader (also at our school) plays this - she was calling it “Beat the teacher”. I’ll see if the school can give DD1 access. And LOL to Mr. what’s his name being annoying - we were playing this mad scientist game for 3-digit adends and the guy is super annoying in that, too. If it annoys a seven year old, you know it’s bad!

@meganmp: Perhaps this would also help her segway into using real flash cards. This sounds perfect - in games with more “fluff” (like Prodigy), her inattentive side gets soooo distracted, so basic, clear cut games are great!

@lisa1783: @ChitownRo: She was OBSESSED with prodigy when she first brought hone her Chromebook, but hasn’t played much recently (now she’s rather play Amplify reading or read on Epic). Do you notice your kids “leveling up” on Prodigy? I’m not sure hers was getting any trickier.

@HappyBaker: good alternative- I might check this out for summer! I already do printed “minute math” sheets for her, but I think presenting the concepts to her in a different way might one day just click hit her!

We have Prodigy for my son and he loves it but it's like a RPG setup - not exactly timer based but it does encourage core memorization. Reflex is also popular and that has the timer but that stressed my son out to the core and made him dread math.

We tried XtraMath and it totally stressed my daughter out because it’s about being fast and she doesn’t know them well enough and she’s a perfectionist. I just bought a book called “Addition Facts that Stick”, it’s math games and a few lessons to learn them differently so they stick better. We haven’t started it yet but I think it will work well, but it does require someone to be doing it with them I think. If you google it you can probably find page samples, she also has books for subtraction, multiplication and division.

Different levels of difficulty and you try and get as many as you can in 2 minutes- my students keep trying to beat their previous score.

My son's teacher signed us up for XtraMath. It's free to use on a computer but it cost money for the app.
it really test fluency. (the Mr. I forgot this name, is slightly annoying...). I think the issue i have with it ... is i don't understand how you graduate to another level. So I ended up moving my son up a level because it was so repetitive. You also have to be quick and be faster than the teacher.
I will look into ReflexMath. So many options, not enough time.

I think Sumdog might be free right now. It is pretty straight-up facts practice, in a video game-esque format.

I am also recommending ST Math to everyone, as it is free right now. It is not exactly what you are looking for, but it is great for developing overall numerical understanding. I am using it with both my fourth- and fifth-grade students and with my four-year-old. No reading required.

My kid's school uses Reflex math and they both love it (one of my kids has ADHD and it keeps their attention). I looked online and they have a free 30 day trial, but I'm not sure how much it is after that.

My second grader could really use some improvement on memorizing basic math facts. Obviously, she can do them, but I'd like her to have them committed to memory so she that when she's doing 3+ digit problems, she doesn't need to think about the simpler single digit addition (ie., she should just "know" that 6+7=13).

She has ADHD, doesn't memorize terribly well, and really doesn't like flashcards...so I think a game with a "timer" aspect would be great. We have ABC Mouse, but I'm struggling to find a "level" that provides what I'm looking for - the 1st grade math games involve too much "help" with counters or multiple choices, rather than prompting straight-up memorization, and the second grade games segway into larger number equations (which I obviously don't expect her to really memorize at this point).

Any suggestions? I'm open to paying for an app (like, $10 or less), but not a full "program" or "system".

I have not checked out Khan Academy, but my kindergartener is occasionally assigned work from there. I haven't explored it much because I think the reading level of the instructions is a little high for a kindergartner, but my second grader, who I'm asking this question for, could read it, so if you know a section on Khan that meets this need, that might work!

Thanks!
