@bluestriped bee: thanks! I know exactly what you mean with the disposable heating pads. I have a few myself! After the ganirelix last night I really found the ice to be very soothing, so I'll probably stick with that.

@SweetiePie: Good tip. Never heard of the slanted side up part before.

I used heating pads after injections. Thermacare makes these disposable heating pads that you stick on your body. I would do the shot and stick a heating pad on the site and go. I have some extras that are just collecting dust. I can mail them to you.

Just wanted to update in case anyone ever searches this topic.
Today I got my orders to do one syringe of ganirelix tonight. I asked the nurse about the crazy idea of transferring to an empty diluent bottle and then using a Menopur syringe and needle. She advises against it because of the chance of losing some of the medicine between transferring.
But she gave me a trick that she said they use. She said to make sure that the sloped side of the needle tip is facing up. She said for whatever reason if it's facing any other way it tends to bounce off the skin. So...I just tried it and it worked!!! It was still maybe slightly more resistance than the tiny Menopur needle, but no "popping" sensation and it went straight in.
I also iced for a good 10 mins before which did help (I usually never ice before shots).

@sandy: Ugh that would be amazing but these are prefilled syringes with the needle affixed (can't be twisted off).
The Menopur has the twist off like you said - the needle that comes on the syringe is terrifying, but then you twist it off and put on a tiny 27 gauge or something like that for injection.

So I'm pretty sure I only had one of these shots and the needle was very intimidating but that the injection instructions where to change to a smaller/sharper needle. I remember seeing the needle at the injection training class and it looking scary but that you used the big needle to load the meds but a smaller one to actually inject. That's my recollection bc I only had to do the ganirelex once so it stood out to me.

@PurplePumps: yeah, I don't ice for anything but I think I will with the ganirelix if I can't transfer to another syringe/needle. And I read that flicking the spot you'll inject over and over helps.

@dookie32: seriously, WHY do they make the needle like that! I understand that something like PIO needs a larger needle, but the ganirelix baffles me!
I really look forward to seeing what my dr says about the hack!

Never heard of that but it sounds like a good idea if the dr ok's it. I do remember those shots sucking the worst out of all of them (the ones I did myself- my husband always did the PIO ones) but I just assumed there wasn't any way around it.

I didn't have any issues with ganirelix but I do remember it felt a little dull but it still did it's job.

Of the whole process, I think I disliked the PIO the worse. It was so thick and I had to do it in two shots and twice a day. I did get the thermacare heating pads and would stick one on after the shot.

Maybe you can ask if they can dispense the Ganarelix in a vial and supply you with needles and syringes.

Oh, how many Ganarelix shots do you need? I think I only needed one shot.

@SweetiePie: omg, I cannot to any IM shots on my own. THAT needle scares me! I can't even watch my husband ptu it in my arm much less do it on myself. I hear ya on the pop and actually really feeling it break though. Maybe try icing or your original though of putting it into another vial to draw with a smaller syringe, I don't see why that shouldn't work if it just had the biostatic water.

@PurplePumps: ugh maybe I'm a wimp! The other shots don't phase me, I've even done all of my PIO IM shots on my own, but the ganirelix made me feel wobbly since I could feel the "pop" of it going through my skin.
I have a feeling this time I'll need multiple rounds so maybe I'll build up a better tolerance. 😬

@SweetiePie: It is a little more dull and larger than the ones I used for the other injections, but it actually hurt less. I thought the point on the insulin syringes hurt like mad a lot more often than the ganerlix. I was doing 4 shots a night and didn't dread the ganerlix anymore than the others.

I feel like this is one of those things that gets hyped on the Internet and isn't a problem in real life. I remember dreading it too and ultimately didn't think the ganirelix shot was any worse than the others - it did make me a little itchy after, but that was it.

So I'm already dreading the ganirelix shots with the dull needle that rips through your skin. Ugh.

I was just reading online that some women take an extra diluent vial from their Menopur, empty it, inject the ganirelix into the empty vial, then draw it up into a Menopur syringe and inject with that.
It sounds kind of brilliant and OF COURSE I would ask my doc or nurse before doing it. But I was curious if anyone else has done this?
