I had no idea my LO had this until now. I had noticed there is a big gap between the two front teeth. I have had a relatively easy time breastfeeding, the only symptom I have had is that LO has always taken a long time to eat for his age. I did have pain and trouble latching early on, but I think it was in the normal range.

I had one and had it clipped when I was a teenager when I got braces to close the gap between my teeth. When I brought LO to the dentist- they commented that he had one as well and would need it clipped at some point to have the gap between his teeth close up.

So I would say she's a class three lip tie. It doesn't come down through the space between the teeth and connect to the underside/ behind. This classification can be grown out of,but it's hard to say for sure. Primary teeth do need some slight spacing between. More than likely if she had it removed before those primary anterior central incisors came in she might not of had such a larger space. I would talk to your dentist, there's no such thing as too early when you have questions concerns in regards to LO's dentition. Most likely they will tell you to just wait and see. There's no emerg regarding this situation that would warrant exposing your Lo to X-rays (radiation) to see how her Permanent dentition is sitting. A panoramic x-ray would show all the teeth she has right now in her maxillary and mandible. @photojane:
She's super cute by the way.
The heart shaped tongue is also associated with a posterior tongue tie. a lot of times it is overlooked and discovered when the mother and child struggle with BFing.
I personally believe that it would save a lot of mama's a lot of heart ache and head ache if hospital nurses could be trained to spot these things.
My boss even got into an argument after giving birth to her son. She said to the nurse " he's looking tongue tied' the nurse responded with "no he's fine there's nothing there" my boss said "are you sure?" and the nurse snapped at her " what's it too you, like your a dentist or something" My boss what like " ya as a matter of fact I am". My boss lazered her son that week.
They did not have to sedate him. The procedure took 5 min. The lazer actually cauterized the tissue immediately and it acts as an analgesic. There's very little pain, more just uncomfortable.

My eldest DD had a posterior tongue tie and a lip tie. We had them lasered and in my opinion, it's necessary. Dr. Ghaheri as mentioned above is an excellent resource, as is Dr. Kotlow (www.kiddsteeth.com).

Our LO had a major lip tie, and since I had such a hard time with breastfeeding in the beginning, we had it lasered at 5 days. Her tongue tie was corrected at 9 weeks. Our ENT exclusively focuses on ties, and is an amazing resource. Since lip ties can cause dental issues and speech delay, he recommends correcting them as early as possible. I'll add a link to his blog where he discusses in depth. I should mention that every single parent in Portland goes to him with tie issues. He's the only doc that does laser treatment, and is very good at diagnosing and treating.

@photojane: that's the same advice I got from our pediatrician. I think because everyone is different and develops differently, they can't really say at when they're really young. Some grow out of it, some don't and you really don't know.
If you have a lip tie like I do but your teeth were fine, she likely has a pretty good chance that hers will do the same.
It's funny you say that about her heart-shaped tongue, it's never been mentioned by the doctor or even the LCs I had, but J has one too (and a very slight posterior tongue tie, but we didn't clip it/notice it).

Thanks so much everyone! I did talk to the ped at her 15m appointment, but when she was trying to look in Sadie's mouth, Sadie was just not having it. She got a little look, but didn't try very hard & said: "It doesn't really matter at this point. They wouldn't do any kind of fix until she's at least 2 or 3." :bummed: She also had a pretty bad tongue tie at birth. It was clipped and we had follow-up appointments with the surgeon for 6 months. She also has a heart-shaped tongue. I'm wondering if it's all connected..?

@rachiecakes: Sadie's lip tie looks pretty similar to J's, I think. I have a little bit of a lip tie too, but never had a gap like Sadie's. I'm hoping hers closes in as well as J's has!

@yellowbird: @MamaPhoenix: I got a better picture tonight, post-bath, pre-teeth brushing when she was laying on her changing pad. What do y'all think? She's 17 months, by the way. (And, yes, she's so pissed at me that she's totally stabbing herself in the eye. :silly: )

I mentioned J's to the pediatrician and because mine hadn't caused any issues, he suggested we wait and see what happens to J's and a year and a half later? Looks just like mine, lol, no space, no issues

My LO's mouth looked the same and both the lactation consultant and ped said it was a lip tie... however, neither they nor the ENT I consulted suggested I do anything about it because she was a little older (close to a year). They said she would need to be put under to do it (though I have heard there are places you can get it done where they don't put them under). We are just going to wait and see. I don't forsee it causing speech issues, but maybe we will want to address it for cosmetic reasons, I don't know.

@hilsy85: Yes mostly from breastfeeding issues, unless it's sever. having it done young could prevent having to have braces in the future for the diastima (gap) between the front teeth. Lip ties don't close the gap usually because there's tissue there. Some server cased lead to sever lisp when older as well. It's not a life threatening situation. If your child struggles with pronunciation down the line you could also have it sniped/lasered then.

@Trailmix: that's what our ped said too. LO had a lip tie and tounge tie when she was younger, caused us some BFing issues that we pushed through bc I was too nervous to have it cut, and her lip tie ended up ripping on its own when she fell around a year.

Gaps between the primary dentition is favorable. The lo needs room for so that the permanent dentition can erupt without spacing being an issue. A LIP TIE actually goes from between the front teeth and attaches to the anterior palate. This usually does not close up. The space will likely stay. Now if its just a space again it more that likely will close. Having the frenectomy causes no harm at any age. My LO way 4 months, when we had it done due to breast feeding issues and she's perfectly fine. A lisp is usually connected with a lip tie.

So I myself have this, as did my dad and most of my siblings. None of us had speech issues at all growing up--in fact, when I took my LO to have her posterior tongue tie and lip ties cut (for BFing problems), I showed the pediatric ENT my own tongue and lip ties and she actually gasped and said MINE were severe, whereas my LOs were mild. She said some babies/kids just naturally learn how to compensate for these things, and have no problems. And yet, my LO with mild cases has major issues BFing. Strange, right?

But I was breastfed with no issues (according to my mom), and I never had any speech problems at all. I also had braces as a teenager and they didn't do anything special to it.

I would not do anything right now! Even if the gap persists when the permanent incisors come in, it usually goes away when the canines come down. If it doesn't a combo of braces and a frenectomy may be indicated but that's 12 or so years from now!
