@SweetiePie: I know...I get all the feels when I walk in to our Container Store...my wallet on the other hand starts crying...

@gingerbebe: drooling...how I would love something that clean and pretty. I think I need to paint the walls (or rather hire someone to paint the walls - I think it would make a HUGE difference.

@gingerbebe omg these are AMAZING!

Following - we only have a 1.5 car garage so not a lot of room. But somehow we still have a lot of stuff crammed in there. We live in Florida so it is incredibly hot in the garage which limits what we can store/how we can store it. I have an upright deep freezer and one of those large freestanding shelves like a PP posted. We have some wall hooks for beach chairs and I'd like to put more for bicycles. We also have a lawn mower, LO's outdoor toys (only a few small ones), our recycling bins, and 2 strollers.

Our new house has a similar size space as your ledge at the front of where DH parks and the previous owners installed these very tall 8 feet solid cabinets that are bolted to the wall. They look like the picture below but in gray. Ours are the compressed wood ones and they are very heavy! They are very deep and hold a ton but everything looks so tidy because the door closes. I might get one or two of those units, maybe one just being counter height, with a space in the middle for the freezer (making sure you have good outlet placement) of those units. Then I would install pegboard over where the drop freezer would be and over the counter height cabinet if you go that route so you can hang things off of. You can install a broom rack or two on the wall with the door and organize your tall things.

FWIW, Home Depot and Lowes have lots of garage storage on sale this weekend! Any money u spend on storage systems will be cheaper than building a third stall just for storage purposes!

So my garage is not as organized as I would like it because we are at the tail end of summer; May-Sept is is over 95 degrees ALL DAY LONG and that garage is TOO HOT to organize / keep organized. So I didn't take a picture but you can imagine :) ! Basically, lots of sturdy shelving and clear rubbermaid 64 quart tote boxes with dry-eraser as labels. We even have some bigger tote boxes, like 100+ quart?? Also, our shelving units are separated by about 8 inches, so we can stand up long items vertically between them (rakes, pool covering, etc).

We have 4 of these, they are super sturdy and can be configured in 2 ways:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A7Z6354/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We don't have the rubbermaid shelves because of the heat here in AZ would probably compromise them. And 1 other shelf set that is mammoth and sturdy that we bought off craigslist, so no idea on brand.

Everything is stored in clear Rubbermaid 64 qt storage containers. It was an investment made when we first moved cross-country 8 years ago, and has helped us through a house/apt move and 3 classroom moves. I drastically prefer clear, worth the extra money. We write basic labels in large dry-erase marker. It's about 2 per shelf, for 12 shelves, so 24?

In the containers we keep all of the baby clothes, baby stuff, teaching materials, hiking supplies, Christmas supplies, and materials for DH's side business. We also storage luggage, gardening supplies, and yard tools, not in boxes.

We don't have a good storage system for LO's 2 strollers and his 2 "cars" we keep in there. We also don't have a good "work area" for DH but we're working on it.

I'll take pics when I get home.

@Lahela017: I was looking at maybe two shelves like that. HD has some nice sales on them right now!

@looch: I would love a third car...if not for the cost. It requires changing the layout and expanding our footprint - which comes at a steep price!

@T.H.O.U.: We do have an attic, though I have never been up there. If you mean solely over the garage - yes but its accessible from inside the house. Part of my plan for adding on without changing our footprint is to actually raise the roof of our garage and make a man cave/storage space up there!

I like your shelving - thats similar to where I think I am heading. Although we need both spaces usable (especially in the winter) so my working space is really up at the front of the cars.

I have a nice size storage space in my basement - but I'd like to keep all "outside" stuff in the garage.

@fmmtk: My mom has something similar that her handy man built. Actually up over the garage door opening - which is a bit awkward bc the door must be closed and cars out to access it. I'm thinking this may be good for our more permanent storage (christmas stuff...seasonal stuff).

@MaryM: I dont think we are allowed to do carports per our association. Same for sheds.

I know DH really wants the third car for a golf simulator. Hence I'd really like to show him an efficiently organized 2 car is sufficient and we can make his man cave above if necessary.

I guess I probably should have given more information.

Our garage was never totally "finished" meaning its drywall but its never been painted. The concrete has never been painted. There are some wood hooks on the walls - but nothing overly functional.

attached is a picture. The fridge is gone. Next to the strollers is a cabinet that is meant for a project in the basement - it will get there soon.

What we ultimately need space for is:
1) 3 or so totes of christmas decor
2) Wall hanging for outdoor tools (garden)
3) Misc Shelving for smaller tools, misc items for cars/garden/sports
4) DH golf shenanigans
5) Lawn Mower & Generator.

Width wise we are pretty tight right now - both our cars are wider...DH usually opts to park outside and take the girls in before parking in the garage. He has the law mower and generator on his passenger side.

We moved in two years ago and are still figuring this out.

We have a couple sets of shelves on one side, and two particle board cupboards on the other side. We don't have much storage space inside (it's a one story house), so I wanted the cupboards for things like crockpots and appliances so they were somewhat closed off from dirt and bugs.

I can only imagine it's going to get tougher with kids though.

Could a car port be an option? We had to move furniture into the garage to get our floors refinished, so we stored the furniture in one bay, and kept one car in the carport. It at least kept it out of the weather and cooler than if it was in the driveway.

@Mrs D: That picture is from when we were moving in. But you can kinda see on the far wall how we have it set up. Towards the garage door, DH has a work bench type thing. Overhead that is just a small shelf and the electric panel so we couldn't put anything tall right there. Eventually he may hang more hooks for small tools etc. There is some space to the left and right of the bench for things like shovels etc to stand. In front of his work bench he just keeps the mower and edger and blower which he uses for the yard. We technically can kinda walk/step through there but its not super easy.

Next to that we have our spare fridge. It is far away from the back door so it is sometimes hard to keep a path clear so we can get to it.

To the right of that we have two of the tall shelving units and a shelf mounted up high. We just have the coolers and bicycles stacked in front of them right now because we dont get stuff off those daily.

Those black bins are staying there, thats stuff like baby clothes I'm saving to pass down to DD so I want to keep them out.

Holiday decor is in the attic.

We utilize these SafeRacks for things that aren't used often - holiday decor and currently baby gear until it is needed again. Which are also great for getting bikes, ladders, etc. off the floors.

https://www.costco.com/SafeRacks-Overhead-Garage-Storage-Combo-Kit%2C-Two-4-ft.-x-8-ft.-Racks%2C-18-piece-Deluxe-Hook-Accessory-Pack-.product.100133736.html

The rest of the walls in our two car garage are lined with shelving similar to what @LAHELA017 posted above. Not going to lie though - it's still a dumping ground :)

We have some plastic cabinets from Home Depot, open shelving is too messy for me to look at.

I am a huge advocate of a third garage bay, though, not having one myself. Right now, we don't have bikes for example, but if we did, we'd have no place to store them.

We have two of these that we currently pile our of our stuff on (not my photo). It works well now because we just have some outdoor play stuff, potting mix/pots, car wash items, bike helmets, and extra paper towel out there. We just have a townhome now though. Once we buy a regular house we will need more space for tools and lawn care items. I'm on board with your husband, we will need a bigger garage or a shed at that point.

Ladies...I'd love to see some "real life" inspiration for garage organization. I'm working on tackling this space right now and am just in need of inspiration. Not magazine quality space...just good functioning normal people space.

We have a 2 car garage with 42" ledge at the front of it. Right now its full of crap...like a space where things go to die in my house. In a perfect world I'd have it all organized neatly - but baby steps.

I do plan to add a chest freezer out there to replace the fridge I just donated.

DH is advocating BIG TIME to build a third car stall when we renovate in a few years and I'd really like to show him that 2 cars can work just fine...
