My first harvest! These are the Early Girl tomatoes in the last picture. I have some Bush Goliath ripening too(middle). My squash got attacked by aphids so it's a little behind.

So the seedlings in the indoor pots didn't take off. We ended up buying plants from a local nursery. They're doing very well! We've got basil, thyme, curly parsley and dill

[attach=1325/15/np2d3s.600x600.image.jpg]

Trying container gardening for the first time this year. Did a bit of reading up on it and hope it takes off!
We've got tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cukes, yellow squash, green beans, yellow/red/green peppers and sugar snap peas.

@SugarplumsMom: Oh no! I bet you are right though. I know when you buy the Jiffy seed starter kit they say to take off the lid once it sprouts or else it will get too moist.

I'm hoping to seed the cold weather plants in a couple weeks. And my tulips and irises and daylilles are all up. It's getting closer to summer!!

Sad, sad news about my tomatoes :crying: They're obviously stunted. I figured it's due to the large container, which affected the air circulation and kept the soil too moist. They've been on the windowsill now for the last 2 weeks (since the sun is out) but they're still puny. We put them out of their misery tonight and they barely had any roots. After years of successfully growing heirloom tomatoes from seed, we've resigned to buying a plant from Ikea :grin: We'll likely grab a few other varieties at the garden center as well.

But our pumpkin seedlings are looking good! How is everyone's plants looking?

@jedeve: We ordered ours from Stark Bros. Nursery, based in Missouri. Great customer service and lots of different plants for all different zones. I didn't know much about blueberries, but depending on which zone you live in, there are special northern bush types that can handle cold temps and others that do well in warm temps. I used this book for all my fruit growing research - http://www.amazon.com/The-Fruit-Gardeners-Bible-Complete/dp/160342567 - It is really fantastic!

Heirloom tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes
Edamame
Basil
Lettuces
Mint
Not sure what else - carrots or peppers. Did broccoli last year and wasn't a fan. Did cucumbers and they just take over everything

@MrsHansen82: Montana! Tomatoes are a struggle here (my early girls weren't ripe by the first frost!). We can get snow as late as Memorial Day and as early as Labor Day. But summers are actually pretty nice.

I am soooo tired after a cruddy night of sleep. But this is supposed to be the only nice day all week so I want to prep my raised bed and plant some spinach!

@MrsHansen82: I'm in Canada, on the prairies. We plant on our long weekend, which is a week earlier than your Memorial Day. The growing season lasts until September, I'd say. I'm super jealous of your long growing season. Although, your water bill must be atrocious if you have to water the plants every day. Always a trade off, I guess.

@Charm54: You should be able to plant most things you want to. I put my garden in May long weekend and have tomatoes and cucumbers and potatoes and cauliflower and broccoli and carrots and peas and beans and onions etc etc. It's just thr exotic things you can't plant. Like avacados and pineapples.

@MrsHansen82: No more rain?? Wow - I can't even imagine that.

@chopsuey: You blueberries are so cute! I want some too, but apparently they need sandy, acidic soil and I'm too lazy to bring in the proper soil to make them happy.

@regberadaisy: I am not a good composter. The only reason I have half a chance is because I have a rotating composter. And even then, I forget to water it, so it ends up hot and dry, rather than hot and composty. And I forget to spin it. I think there's a lot of trial and error with composting. I think you probably need more brown waste in it (think dry leaves) because there's a ratio of brown waste to green waste (kitchen scraps) that you need for success. And you probably need to mix it more often (I've heard that's a common problem). Also, are there holes in your bucket? Otherwise all the water will sit at the bottom and it will get moldy.

@regberadaisy: No specific tips, but if cost if the issue, you can check with your county (or neighboring county's) Soil and Water division. I can get a composter for $45 compared to $115 if I buy it at Home Depot. They also have rain barrels at a discount.

@SugarplumsMom: Your tomatoes are looking awesome so far! I tried to grow some from seeds last year, but this year I'm just throwing in the towel before I start and buying them as plants.
@MrsHansen82: I'm jealous of you girls who can plant already!
@regberadaisy: I love the idea of container gardening! Your herb display is so cute! I love it! I've tried doing herbs a few times before and it's always been a fail for me.
@AmeliaBedilia: A farm sounds amazing. I wish I had the room for pumpkins!
@chopsuey: Looks great!

This year I'm planning on getting tomato and pepper plants, brussel sprouts, snap peas, any maybe zucchini or cucumbers. I want to start a second bed of veggies this year also. I might do potatoes or sweet potatoes or something. I tried strawberries last year and failed, but I might give it another try. I also managed to kill my raspberry bushes, so I will probably buy new ones and prep the area better.
I also bought new flowers and two hydrangea bushes to replace some ugly bushes in front of our house. I can't wait to get gardening! I've got at least another month though.

I was going to have a huge garden, but I think it will be too hard since I don't live there, and we have so much going on.

@Grace: Well the boxes have held up pretty well to watering so far, also I live in CA and it probably won't be raining anymore this year. This is the first time doing this, so we'll see!

I really want to start a little vegetable garden this year...I am off all summer so I think it would be a great hobby for dd and I to do together. We have such a short spring/summer here in Atlantic Canada that I'm not sure what is feasible to grow but I think I will start small this year and see what I'm able to get . This thread is very helpful!
