@mrbee: I asked my husband, since he has more experience than me. I explained that you're battling runners and his advice sounds like what you're already doing. "Just pull as much of the root as you can every time you remove some of it. Eventually it will go away."

Once most of it is gone, one of these hoes would help your back from new weeds that are forming. I always wanted one of these, but I found that if I pull weeds early enough in the season, then cover the bare areas with mulch, they don't get so out of hand.

I prefer padded leather gloves (on the palm) with a breathable cloth over the hand. Those seem to last the longest. DH used to do a lot of heavy duty gardening: battled unruly hops, dug out a few trees, dug out a ginormous hedge. He's been through a lot of gloves. The sturdiest were all leather gloves (but soft) from Costco. Now that he doesn't do heavy duty digging, he's usually in those light, plastic coated gloves.

If an area is particularly weedy (with long mature roots), it might be better to just dig everything up with a shovel. Once it's nice and clear, make sure to either plant something to stop the weeds from growing back or add a heavy mulch (wood chips or the like).

@mrbee: I hate that stuff! I call it crab grass, not sure if it's the true name. It's super strong and crazy !

@mrbee: I find that even with gloves my nails get nasty. Scrape a bar of soap with your fingernails before you start gardening. Easy nail cleanup after. ;)

@Amorini: I don't know what they are called, but here's a picture of some of the weeds in the trash! Some of the runners can be several feet long...

@mrbee: Lately, I use some HD gloves I bought for about $15 but the rubberized ones can help you feel the roots more and get a better handle on them. Pull from just above where the plant is coming up from the ground and give a little wiggle to loosen the soil before yanking. What kind of weeds do you think you have -- just curious? Some I need tools for and some I don't...

Would gloves with rubberized palms help? I have & like these, and DH stole a pair from my pack and they fit him fine as well. Not sure if you could source something
similar locally?

@Mrs.Someone: That looks awesome! I was so excited to see the reviews but sadly, my weeds have runners above and below the ground that go sideways from the weed. So you have to bend over and find the roots and then pull them out... the runners can be 1-2 feet long and crisscross each other, it's a huge pain!

I just found a magic tool called Grandpa's weeder or something like that. It's great and much easier on my body. You probably won't be able to find it there though, sorry!

I wear gloves and I use tools to loosen the dirt around the weed so the entire thing comes out, root and all.

Yup, gloves. I've found that it's easier to pull out the roots if the ground is a little wet, too.

Our lawn has a lot of weeds, and I've finally gotten serious about pulling them all up by the roots! It's going really well (albeit slowly), but I'm running into a problem: I am weeding with my bare hands, as it really helps me find and pull out the roots of the weeds.... but my fingernails are getting brutalized by all this underground searching for weed roots!

Obviously I need gloves, but how can you weed without bare hands?! In any case, thought I'd ask the expert gardeners out there: what gloves do you use when gardening and/or weeding? And if you don't use gloves, what is your secret??
