@Mrs. High Heels: oh, simethicone is the active main ingredient in gas drops--sorry!

i got both biogaia and udo's choice probiotics (this was in one evening of frantic driving around to drugstores/whole foods to get probiotics because i was dearly hoping they would be the solution to all our problems).

having spent $30 on biogaia, i'm really not sure it made a difference. it ran out a few days ago and we've started using udo's choice. LO continued to have gas problems until recently, so for him at least, i think it just took time for his system to mature.

that being said, it can't hurt, and a lot of people swear by probiotics. while the price tag stung at the time, i don't regret it. i don't think we'll continue to use probiotics after our supply runs out, if not sooner. part of it was that i needed to feel like i was doing something. for example, i don't think the main ingredient in gripe water (sodium bicarbonate) even combats gas, but i still use it! i'm a sucker.

@edelweiss: you read my mind!! i've been sitting here for the last hour looking through old threads about probiotics... i think i'm going to try biogaia, but the pricetag isn't pretty.

what is simethicone?

we started using simethicone at 4 weeks, introduced probiotics around 6 or 7 weeks, and added gripe water to the mix at 8 weeks. honestly, i'm not sure any of them work. the fact that his gas issues have gotten better (at least over the past week) may be due to his system maturing. but they don't hurt, at least according to my pediatrician, and they make *me* feel like i'm doing something, so i continue.

i know this thread is old, just adding my two cents for anyone researching through the board archives!

@wheres_c: just a suggestion to check with your pedi first. He told me to take probiotics because I'm breastfeeding but wasn't comfortable with LO taking them until she's 6 months.

@wheres_c: We used Inner Health Plus Kids - I'm in Australia so I'm not sure if that brand is sold in the US. I'd ask at your pharmacy if you're looking at getting them as ours needed to be kept in the refrigerator section of the pharmacy and I never would have found them without talking to a midwife at the pharmacy first!

I have heard great things about the Windi as well. We used gas drops and I'm really not sure they helped at all. Tummy time laying on our chest helped, and letting them sleep at an incline (in a swing, bouncy chair or rock n play) helped with sleep. Once their gut matures a bit the gas is much less of a problem. We used to get Wagon Jr. to fart all the time but it doesn't work as well with LMW. Good luck!!

Bicycling legs, or gently pressing their legs to their chest works pretty well for us. We also use probiotics but LO still had gas issues. Warm bath, or laying LO on a warm hot water bottle (obviously you have to closely monitor the bottle to make sure it doesn't get too warm!). good luck, gas sucks!!!

We didn't use probiotics, but we probably will next time after seeing what a difference it made in our friends' LO. Bicycling their legs also helps.

I second the probiotics! As my midwife said - you can either treat the symptoms (gas drops) or treat the cause (probiotics). Made perfect sense to me and we started using them when DD was around 6 weeks old or so. We haven't had a fussy period due to gas since then!

My poor DS has been so miserable off and on. I am sure it is directly related to gas build-up in his system. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to better relieve gas?
I have gas drops, but they don't seem to help. I burp him often when we feed him. The only thing that seems to calm him is laying skin to skin tummy down on me or hubby. The combination of heat and pressure make it better.

What have you guys done to help with tummy troubles of your little ones?
