@Littlebit7: but it was a big enough window of time, that if someone was prepared and wanted to do something, it could have happened. That's pretty scary.

@looch: True! How quickly we forget. And that was relatively short-lived! Yep the Home Battery looks great. On the wish list one day.

@Mama Bird: Us too. I lived the south a few times growing up so I was used to preparing for hurricanes...my pantry was FULL for sandy and I had ordered a TON of water. The fresh direct guys thought I was crazy. But thats all preppable stuff, right? I don't know what we'd do....just get in the car and drive until we were somewhere that had supplies? I have no idea. We do tend to keep a chunk of cash on hand at all times. But I agree with you; a part of me would like to live somewhere where we could, partly at least, self-sustain.

@Littlebit7: Well, that did happen in 2003 in the northeast. We got power back the next day in NYC, but I think it did take some time for the areas further out.

Eventually we will get Elon Musk's Powerwall Home Battery pack. We tried to get solar panels, but we don't have enough sunlight. We also have a generator and a propane tank on our property that we could use to power our home, but we'd be out of luck on our car situation.

@Littlebit7: Yep. Totally. I'm in a big city and we're 99% dependent on the grid. We get our food from outside, we get our water from outside, we don't have any means to heat our homes or go around long distances with heavy loads (the sort you can't carry on a bike) should electricity and gasoline be out. We did have very little gas and no electricity for about a week or two after Sandy, and the city and individuals were able to get through that OK, but what if the disruption covered a bigger area or took longer to fix?

I always have a little voice in the back of my mind planning out how we'd get by if that happened. And I really wish I could get out of the city altogether so I could at least grow my own food and have a rainwater collector. It's such a deep fear that it's not quite rational any more :silly:

Not to be all debbie downer.....Reading these posts really scares a tiny tiny tucked away part of my brain. Anyone else??? We rely SO heavily on things like gasoline and our electrical grid.. And we take it all for granted. With the current state of our world... something as simple as disrupting this would throw us into upheaval, not some single crazy dude with a knife.

Hybrid cars aren't that expensive any more! I went to test drive a Prius in 2007 and was surprised to see it cost about the same as any other new car. So I bought it. I did have to replace the battery twice (about $500 each time) but that was my own fault. I park the car very far from home and sometimes I don't get too drive it for a long time, and the battery runs down.

@bluestriped bee: I have a Nissan Leaf, fully charged, it has a range of about 80 miles, which is enough for me to go where I need to do during the day. One thing I do have to say is that range anxiety is a real thing with this kind of car, because I do need to think ahead and make sure I have a full charge overnight.

My husband drives a Tesla, though, so the range there is much better and it also charges faster. The benefit of that car is really the supercharging stations that you can find all over the country. The car is smart enough to plan a route with those as stops, so it's really like stopping to fill up with gas on a longer trip. I think the Model 3 is really going to be the breakthrough there though, in terms of affordability and acceptance of electric cars.

@looch: yes, I sold my SUV when gas prices increased in 2008 and now we have 1 hybrid and 1 regular sedan. I still have a long commute though. I am hoping to make it through the week without getting gas but may need it Friday or work from home that day when I need to be in the office.

@looch: Have you gone shopping for hybrid cars? They cost a pretty penny upfront. It's definitely more expensive in the initial cost but I heard you save money in the long run. I just can't get over the initial cost.

I thought about it but the thought is usually gone when I was car shopping. Also, I've heard that people who own a hybrid don't usually own another one. And I heard replacing the battery is pretty expensive... not like $2-4K. I heard much more.

My sister is an environmental engineer and she doesn't think hybrids are the best choice environmentally. At least when she and I were car shopping. She doesn't think the disposal of the battery is all that good. She does live and work in a big city and she takes the bus, her bike or walks to work.

DH had to go to three stations Monday before finding one with Premium gas. I filled up my tank last night figuring it wouldn't be busy. There were quite a few cars there. All that was left was Regular, which is what I use. A couple cars came and quickly left- I guess they needed premium.

Heres an article from my hometown in case anybody is interested. Short version, there was a leak in a main pipeline and they had to shut it down, so supplies to the southeast are depleated. Everyone is panicing and buying up all the gas, so gas stations are out. They are working on getting it fixed but it could be about a week before most gas stations get any more!
