We had similar issues around this age. I think mostly it was a stage - I was convinced I was doing something obvious wrong, burping him wrong, eating the wrong things, etc... I tried eliminating dairy for other reasons, but I don't think that did much. Basically, for us, all of a sudden his digestive system seemed to mature. After that, he pooped much more easily and gas didn't seem to bother him. I think part of the reason he was so bothered was he was clenching his butt when clenching his tummy to pass gas/poop, which is apparently common and makes it a lot more uncomfortable. Once he understood not to do that, he had a much easier time pooping and wasn't bothered by the gas. Gerber soothe drops maybe helped a little, but hard to say. They didn't hurt. Baths did help, but obviously you can't have them in the bath around the clock...

I remember my DD being gassy right around 3 weeks. The only thing that helped her was for me to hold her while bouncing on an exercise ball. I don't know why, something about that movement made her feel better. And let me tell you sitting on a ball for a few hours it a lot better than walking the floors!!

We also used the rock n play for nighttime sleep with my second daughter to get us through the first six to eight weeks - I’d forgotten how much that helped when she was extra fussy at night! She slept so much better in it at the incline, and she transitioned fine to the crib down the road.

DS had reflux and lots of gas. Here is what helped us:
1. Abdominal massage. Very important to massage in the correct order or you could push the gas the wrong way. Start on the baby’s right hip bone and massage with little circles up to their ribs, then over and then down to the left hip bone. Move slowly and repeat 3-5 times
2. Probiotics. We used Klaire labs or seeking health
3. Gas drops
4. Gripe water. I would even dip his binky in it and it seemed to keep him calm
5. Lots of extra burping mid feed
6. Holding upright after feeds
7. Paced bottle feeding if applicable
8. Rock and play for all sleep. I had the rnp next to our bed and found that he always had his head turned towards me, so each night I would rotate it. So one night, his head would be near my head and the next night, his feet would be by my head. That way, he would have to turn the opposite direction to see me. And I could still see him super easily.
9. Warm baths before bed
10. Instead of bicycling, pressing both of his knees to his chest and holding for a few seconds a few times seemed to work to get those toots out

Good luck! I hope you get some sleep tonight!

@ALV91711: I have heard people complain that the flat spot was more common with the rock and play- I guess babies don’t move their head back and forth when they are nestled in? Honestly I don’t really know becaue i needed my babies to sleep and that helped!

@ALV91711: yep, so annoying. However, my take on it was, if they help the baby be comfortable and you and/ or they can get more rest then it was worth it for me to try. It wasn’t shelling out hundreds on a bed, just $30 for drops and I knew it wouldn’t do any harm, if anything I just gave my baby expensive drops. Ha!

@Littlebit7: ya, I'm wondering if he likes the incline and that is why he naps good in it.

@Foodnerd81: Coukdnt a flat spot happen from sleeping in the crib too then? I thought flat spot was just from too much time on their backs.

@Mrs. Goose: There seems to be so many things that could or could not help. I wish babies had a manual!

I used the baby biogaia probiotic drops for my gassy baby. It maybe helped a bit. My friend used it for her reflux baby and it may have helped. Difficult to say.

@ALV91711: I used the rock and play for night sleep for both my kids, told both our pediatricians, and they were fine with it. I would definitely try it. Transition to a flat crib as they got older wasn’t too bad and neither kid got a flat spot (the two biggest complaints I hear.)

When my younger one was super fussy and constipated, my pediatrician had me try probiotics for her and I think it really helped. But with a baby that little i would check in with the pediatrician before trying them. It could have been placebo but I believe it helped.

@ALV91711: I think you’d be ok trying the rock n play. He might like the incline a bit or feeling more “cosy”. Try it; no harm in giving it a go.

@Baby Boy Mom: I don't eat much dairy so that wouldn't be too hard. A good nights sleep is really worth anything.

Of course he is sleeping great today on his own. He naps in his rock n play but we have been putting him in the crib at night. Would it be with trying the rock n okay for nighttime sleep?

I’ll be that person that will suggest cutting dairy at least for a little while. :silly: It truly did help my LO even though she wasn’t mspi just needed a little more time for her digestive system to mature. Anything that helps me get a good night’s rest with a little one is worth it!

@caitcat: I don't really remember this with DS1 but he is 5.5, so that was a long time ago and I could sleep when he did during the day.

I might try pre burping, it can't hurt. I was feeling like things were going pretty good. He was waking every 2-3 hours overnight but went right back to sleep after feeding. Now the last couple nights it is fussiness and gas and hiccups.

I remember 3 weeks being a really rough spot with that for both of my girls. It caught me by surprise the first time because I was starting to feel a bit better myself at that point, almost felt like we were getting in some kind of a new normal routine, and then bam! It's like a switch flipped at week three. She became incredibly fussy, gassy, unhappy especially in the evenings and overnight.

I have a friend who swears by pre-burping her baby to help with gassiness. Basically just burping the baby before feeding as well as after feeding, I think? I never tried it on my girls, so I can't vouch for it. But in case it helps, I figured I'd pass it along. My friend insists it does! But I also think she has the world's easiest baby. Mine were never as easygoing as hers about anything. :)

I know it’s not what you want to hear but other then gripe water/mylicon, and doing the things you are already doing, it was a phase for both of my kids and most my mom friends’ kids. It lasted 2-4 weeks for us all starting around 2-3 weeks old. Lots of grunting, gas, tummy aches, general discomfort especially in the evening and at night. I’m sure someone will suggest cutting dairy if you are BF but the odds are in your favor that it will pass with a short amount of time (dairy sensitives do happen but aren’t as common as anecdotal evidence would lead you to believe). Good luck. I promise you it gets better; these first two months are VERY hard.

DS will be 3 weeks on Monday. He is super gassy which is making him very fussy. He burps when he eats. I've been massaging his tummy and cycling his legs. Any other tips or tricks.

We were up a majority of last night because of this and we can't keep going this way.
