Also he spits up quite a lot, which is what makes me think it might be reflux...

@Ms. RV: @MrsSCB: thanks, this gives me hope that maybe it's something that will resolve on his own. He just looks like he's so miserable when he's eating and after... so much thrashing and grunting and pulling up his legs. I'm using a slow flow nipple but will look if I can find a preemie one that fits the bottles.

My son was suuuuper gassy. Like tons of grunting, couldn't get back to sleep. It improved enormously by around eight weeks and now at 14 weeks is a distant memory :-) I used Burt's Baby Bee oil to do this massage and it helped a bit http://www.lalecheleague.org/nb/nbjanfeb98p13.html

DD was EFF at seven weeks and was also super gassy. Nothing helped her except time. Around three months she was a lot more comfortable. Also.. what nipple flow are you using? If you go to a preemie flow, he might not guzzle as fast and then not get as much air.

@bluestriped bee: did it help when you switched? What did you switch to? I'm worried maybe it's a sensitivity to cows milk or some kind of allergy.. or just reflux... not sure how to know! Poor guy seems so uncomfortable all the time :(

My son stayed up all night crying from all the gas he had. We tried everything to help him relieve the gas (bicycle exercises, gas drops, gripe water, warm bath, tummy massage). Thankfully, we were scheduled to see the dr the next day. Dr suggested switching to another brand of formula.

@gingerbebe: He actually burps quite easily just by being propped up a bit when eating... big burps! But still seems to have discomfort based on his actions. Will ask my doc about drops next appointment.

@Goldengirl: Yeah its OTC - its safe and my ped never had any issues with us giving it to the kids. It just pops the gas bubbles. Also when you burp, put the baby over your shoulder and pat them on THEIR left side while patting your hand upwards. If that doesn't work, hold them up sorta like they are standing for a few seconds. That seemed to make my kids burp pretty fast.

@atoz: Have been trying a bit of the bicycling and rubbing, not sure if it was helping but maybe? Do you usually do this right after finishing feeding?

@gingerbebe: I wasn't sure if maybe he'd need gas drops... is that something OTC or do you discuss that with a doctor first? He's so young that it's hard to know yet if this is a passing phase or something that needs treatment... I'm not sure how to know!

@SKINNYCOW: This gives me hope, I hope it does go away!

DD is EBF but was extremely gassy from 2-4 ish weeks. She would scream until she was able to get things moving. We did belly rubs and bicycling which seemed to help some. I've heard the windi helps but DD"s resolved before I had a chance to get one.

Both my boys had reflux and were gassy and colicky so we had to do ALL THE THINGS. We supplemented with Gerber good start gentle, used Dr Brown bottles (MAM for DS2) and put gas drops in their bottles.

My LO is EBF but was super gassy as a baby. Light belly rubs & "bicycling" her legs helped get things moving. Check out the Dr. Sears "I Love U" belly rub.

My oldest was combo fed after 8 months old. He had trouble with cows milk based formula. We switched to soy and he was fine. Although to be fair my youngest is EBF and is extremely gassy. So I am hoping it just works itself out soon.

DS is 2 weeks old and seems to constantly be uncomfortable from what I assume is gas pains, especially while/after eating. He is EFF ready to feed formula. He'll pull his legs up and get grunty and red in the face and kind of thrash around a bit. I'll rub his belly, rock him, and eventually he calms down but it can take awhile to settle him which is exhausting in the middle of the night. His doctor had said it's normal when they're this young while their systems get used to digesting milk and as long as he's eating/gaining weight, it's okay. But I hate seeing him struggle all the time.

Wondering if anyone else experienced this with their newborns and if/when it passed, and if you found anything to help? I'm hoping this isn't a forever-type thing :meh:
