@Mrs. Jacks: She managed to drink quite a bit of it at the ER and before bed tonight. The doctor said to feed her as normal but just replace the formula with the Pedialyte.

@zippylef: I'm so glad. For kids that are doing ok, sometimes I recommend 1 tsp of pedialyte every 5 minutes til they are tolerating it for about .5 hr without throwing up, then increase to 2 tsp then liberalize. It allows their guts time to absorb what's being given to them and breaks the ketotic cycle :)

@Mrs. Jacks: We just got home. They said that she is not dehydrated and that we are doing a good job. They made a follow-up appointment for us on Thursday. They told us to just do the Pedialyte for the next couple days and forget the formula, since that's making her throw up.

@Mrs. Jacks: @SAHM0811: Her last 2 diaper changes have been nearly dry. So... it's been since last night since I've seen any really wet diapers and even yesterday, she had diarrhea every diaper so it was hard to tell if she was wet. There's been no more diarrhea today and very minimal vomiting, just once and it was more like bad spit-up than vomit.

@Thehistoryofus: She's vomiting less, only when we give her formula. She drank a decent amount of water yesterday but not enough. I think she is dehydrated. :/ I'm about to call our ped.

I've been through this twice with my youngest DD at 6 months old and just last month at 18 months old again. I pushed fluids aggressively... One doctor told me that some kids don't like pedialyte because of the sodium content/taste, so Gatorade was fine. We gave water, Gatorade and Vitamin Water because that's what she would take. I kept nursing her too. She tolerated crackers and plain rice after about one or two days and I slowly have her other foods from there.

Three wet diapers in 24 hours is the minimum... If it gets close to that, or lower, take her in!

My DD did need IV fluids the first time... I'm a nurse, but it was so completely devastating to see. I hope your baby won't get to that point.

Hope she feels better! It took my DD around 7-10 days to get completely back to normal both times :( It's hard for us caregivers too... Take care.

when DS had it we gave little amounts of pedialyte at a time because nothing was staying down. and when you start giving formula, if it's milk based i wouldn't give it 'full strength' because their stomachs are so blah. DS couldn't keep his formula down for a while after, we ended up on soy formula for 2 weeks.

We knew that my daughter needed to go to the ER when she had just woken up from a nap and was sitting with my mom and closed her eyes again. She immediately fell back asleep (even though she just woke up and went through a diaper change) and when we called her name and picked up/dropped her limbs she didn't wake up.

@zippylef: Well, the way I look at that is that she is sick.... and when I'm sick, I sleep. So as long as you can push fluids and she's taking them, that's the most important.

@zippylef: Yes, it's common but I'd be concerned she's getting dehydrated (our kiddos are on an IV when I see them). Maybe try and feed her less but more often... so 3 oz of something every couple of hours. If she's lethargic and keeps throwing up and having watery poop, I'd take her back in. If things start to subside... and her poops start to thicken, I'd say she's on the mend. Poor pumpkin...

@zippylef: I would start with the pedialyte plain... and as she tolerates that, do half strength formula (made with double water).
Oh, and rotavirus has staaaaaaanky poo... you will know if it's rota. It probably is just viral GE... I would just try anything you can think of to get her to drink including things like jello.

@Thehistoryofus: She has the nasty diarrhea. It wasn't too bad yesterday but it's worse and the vomiting is a little better today. They didn't tell me it was rotavirus, they just said viral gastroenteritis when I took her to the ER yesterday morning. If she's still vomiting through today, I'm going to take her again tomorrow. So far, it's only been once today.

@Ash: So, mix the Pedialyte and formula? It seems the formula is really what's been making her throw up more than anything else. I've just been giving her 1-2oz at a time.

Also, I would never normally give Gatorade, but if you have some I would water it down and try it. For some reason my LO refused the pedialyte but would take sips of orange gatorade.

Also, try any kind of liquid that you can, ice chips, slushy, straw, sippy, bottle, water bottle, etc.

@zippylef: I was going to ask you about Rotavirus. My LO got it around 11 months even though she had the first dose of vaccine. When she had it she had the very textbook symptoms throwing up for 24 hours and then really nasty seedy blow out poos for a week. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/rotavirus

C woke up yesterday morning with vomiting and diarrhea. She doesnt have a fever. I cant hardly get her to hold anything down. We did formula all yesterday and she was throwing it all back up. Today, she managed to hold down a few oz of formula, some water and a couple crackers. I just mixed up some apples/bananas/oatmeal puree into a bowl and she ate some of it, although not much. We'll see if that comes back up.

Im just not sure what else to do. I'm so scared she's going to get dehydrated. Ive been trying to push her drinking water but I know she's not getting much. DH is going to stop and get some Pedialyte on his way home today and we'll try that.

She's only 10 months old. :(
