The recommendation is to definitely gate check over luggage check & even to see if there is open availability to be able to install it on the flight. Definitely worth a shot given your seat is certified for air travel. :)

@kiddosc: We have the bag that @charlotte posted-- it was nice to just wear it like a backpack and leave our hands free to tend to the baby and our carryons.

Usually I've had to baggage check it, I don't think we've ever gate checked the car seat. We just flew this past weekend and the airline gave us an enormous plastic bag to put it in. Not every airline does though, but we have never had a problem with it being knocked around or dirty. I would much rather baggage check it than drag the whole thing through the airport.

We've gate checked without a bag for a quick flight, no plane changes. And it was easy. Just try to wrangle all the straps and buckles as best you can and tie them together. :)

@mediagirl: Yea, that was another of my concerns... having to lug that thing around the airport, it's not exactly light. Since it was DHs idea to bring it, it will obviously be his job to carry it.

we've been gate checking our carseat in this. it looks super cool. :)

but seriously, it always works out great and keeps the seat nice and protected.

We gate checked. It was awful. We didn't have a way to carry it around so my husband had to lug the damn thing all over the airport. Never. Again. We are renting one next time.

Oh and we just put a gate check bag over it, we found one on Amazon.

@kiddosc: I have always used the car seat bag, because I haven't found the airlines to be consistent in offering bags. If they do use bags, the are usually the clear variety, which are kind of hard to find locally (where I live at least). You also might find your convertible seat won't fit in that bag, our travel seat is a narrow Cosco Scenera, so we have no issues, but the Britax models might not fit.

What I recommend doing is putting a card inside the straps of the car seat, buckling it all closed, just in case the carseat and the bag become separated. The bag I use is the exact one that you've posted in the link. I tie up the drawstring as well, don't want that getting caught.

I have both gate checked and checked it via regular baggage. I always use a bag, you'd be surprised how dirty it will come out at your destination!

Gate Check! And I hear it's hit or miss on the bag, sometimes it's nice to have for damage control, but I hear oftentimes it gets misplaced because of the cover!! :)

I do def recommend taking your own carseat instead of renting one! The car rental carseats are JANKKKKKKKKKKY.

Yep, they gate check them (as well as a stroller). I've never used a bag or cover and it's never been a problem.

We need to fly to visit my parents and DH wants to bring our carseat rather than rent one from the rental car company. E is still able to travel as a lap infant, so we wouldn't buy him a seat and use the carseat on the plane. Those that have traveled with a convertible seat before:

-Do you check it at the gate, or with your luggage?
- Do you use a bag to protect it? I was thinking of swinging by BRU and getting this. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=17199286
Or would you use a large trash bag or something?
