@Sammyfab: well you can check them without bags, so I guess they don't think they need to provide it? I'm not shocked that they don't provide a thing. :(

I will say when we flew the flight attendants were really nice to her :)

@misolee: @Foodnerd81: I'm Canadian and I've only flown WestJet. I'm shocked that US Air wouldn't have bags big enough though. After having my LO and traveling with him significantly, I've come to realize how often babies are on airplanes (especially domestic flights).

We've always checked the car seat with our luggage and it has never counted as "luggage" (i.e., they have always counted it outside on your one free checked bag for airlines that limit free bags).

Almost everytime the airline has provided a clear plastic bag to protect the car seat, but a trashbag would work as well.

Many airports will unload carseats with "oversized luggage", which can be a different place than regular luggage, so don't freak if your car seat doesn't come out in the same place as your suitcase! :)

@misolee: @Sammyfab: us air did not have bags big enough at check in or at the gate, in Boston or Phoenix. I'm glad we had our own. They did have one at check in but it couldn't even fit the whole infant seat?

Does all airlines supply the plastic bags? Which ones did?

We always check our carseat with our luggage and we use the plastic bags supplied by the airline. We've had no issues so far after flying 3 round trips.

I have checked our carseat several times. I would highly recommend buying a bag for it. The one I bought was 40$ and worth every penny. Luggage handlers are not gentle with your stuff, you want to be sure your car seat doesn't get knocked around too much since it can weaken the plastic, so definitely get a padded bag to protect it.

We just flew with an infant seat and snap and go, but the same process should apply. One the way there we gate checked it, and put the carseat and base in a big black plastic bag, the contractor type. I put a couple of flourescent labels that said car seat so they would know it wasn't garbage, plus labelled it with our name and phone number.

On the way home, I didn't want to deal with it in the airport so we just checked it with baggage. Used the same giant plastic garbage bag, came out with the luggage at the end.

I have heard horror stories about seats being checked but it seemed fine to me, and I can only worry about so much.

Oh and we flew US Air, their policy is free checked car seat OR stroller. But no one questioned it that we checked the car seat and the snap and go. In your case, you should get them both free anyway if you check one as baggage and then gate check the stroller (since you are only ever checking one at a time).

You can check it with luggage. I've always seen that it's free, but I would check just in case. We used a big thick contractor trash bag to put our seat in when we flew.

I have checked it with baggage, check with your airline's rules, you may be charged an additional fee, it may be free.

You can use a trashbag. I like the clear ones, so people know what's in it. I write my last name on a big piece of duct tape, classy I know.

We're going on a cross country flight next week and will be taking our convertible car seat (not the main one).

Question #1: I really don't want to gate check it. We'll be flying from Atlanta and the airport is busy and big and sometimes the gates feel like it's 200 miles away (and this was before baby). LO will be in her umbrella stroller which we are gatechecking. Should we gate check it? Has anyone just checked it in with luggage?

Question #2. I also don't want to buy a bag cover and use it only like several times. Is there anything else I can cover the car seat with? trashbag?
